Default Spinning

So my friend enlightened me on something fun to do with our FWD cars in an empty parking lot. Take two trays from any fast food resturant, and put them under your rear wheels. Pull the E-brake up, and have at it. I did it in his Cavalier, and while it's incredibly fun (when done safely out of public), he doesn't care about his car's transmission, tires... he just hates his car in general. My car, however, is my baby.

So i'm wondering, other than tire wear and tear, is there any risk of damage to the transmission and/or other parts by spinning the car in this fashion? (Rear swinging like a clock hand, while the front spins in place)

Keep hate comments out please. I could be street racing or doing other stupider ____ than this.

yeah, i know its really fun. my friend showed me that on his 96 civc and i also tried once on my celica 92. besides the tires i know that you might also damage parts related to the e-brake near the front wheels. not really sure about the transmition, though.

I'd be cautious if you love your car... if one of those trays pops off your rear tires are going to grab like a mother... and ugh, that may not make your tC happy... If you take it easy and don't go hogwild with the throttle, you may get a few cheap thrills...

(Be cautious, as the parking lot owner could tresspass you and any cop who sees it will have a good time writing tickets, even in a lot, it's reckless driving and unlawful display of power if he wants to be a jerk about it)

I remember when I thought a car was a toy but I don't remember when I used cafeteria trays to remind me of such. This is my favorite thread in a long time and I'm gonna put it in my "favorites". Advanced notice btw, I may link it elsewhere.

Hmmmm.. I've never heard of this, it does sound like fun but I'd never do it with my tC. Too bad my beater is 4WD.

I've seen this done once in a minivan, it was hysterical. I wouldn't do it in my car though, thanks.

I did it in my tC a while back. It didn't hurt anything. The trays gradually wear out and you start to hear more tire noise, that's when you know it's time to stop. It's scary as crap the first time cuz your car just rotates on an axis, like you're on a spin table or something. The only part that's dangerous is getting trays. It's stealing and if you get caught you could get the police called on you or be ban from the resteraunt.

My friend is an employee at Burger King. It's not hard to get them.

My 1 year old, $16k with only 12k miles car isn't a toy. I'm spoiled, but I know where to stop, or at least ask. Hence why i'm asking, instead of just doing it.

Doesn't the ebrake only lock the rear tires though? This shouldn't affect the ebrake "near the front wheels".

depending on the car, the e-brake consits of a cable directly connected to the brake mechanism one end and to some type of mechanism that can be actuated by the driver on the other end. so, if you have a front wheel drive car with brakes only in the front wheels, then you might damage or shorten the life of the parts. i read this online. i could be wrong or the website could be wrong.

don't be scared. it's not going to ruin your car. The trays take all the damage, Just stop once they wear out and you'll be fine. The E-brake can stand some abuse. I pulled mine lots in turns to make the back end slide and it never broke. the only thing is you'l have to get it tightened again more frequently. Don't you think the big-wig japs considered the thought that someone might pull their -ebrake to do stupid stuff. Did you know Toyota radomly selects engines from the plant to test and redlines them for (i think) 36 continuous hours. It's part of their torture test. Trust me, toyota knows your going to use and abuse your car, they built it accordingly.

That's it.

They should have done it at a place with more room though. Not a lot of it for mistakes.

theres no definite causes, it is just a lot more abuse on the front suspension parts. Its not something i would do if i wanted to keep the car running like new for as long as possible.

You may not immediately feel the effects of it, nor may it do any damage that will cost you. But you will have to drive around the car knowing that you abused it, and you may also have to deal with early maintenance.
