I have a question. When I use my rear wiper it sometimes makes a grinding noise, not the noise you hear when the window isnt wet enough. It only makes this sound when it is going down towards the off position. It has happened when the window is wet or dry. Has anyone else heard this noise? It doesnt do it all the time and i know when I go to the dealership it wont be there for them to hear. So has anyone heard this? No one is ever with me when it happens so that I can get back there and see where it is coming from. Any ideas?

Maybe the blade is uneven and it rubbing no matter how wet it is.. Try getting some new wipers..

I removed the whole thing, no need for it since the back window is so flat, the water just "falls" off... :lalala:

The problem is the wiper blade itself is getting hard, if you replace it with a new non-factory one it will stop making that chattering noise. The more you spend.... the better the blade...the softer the material...the less noise.

I've owned my box (bought new) for less 6 months now(it was produced in Dec 2005). My rear wiper shows the same symptoms as all of yours. SO, I don't think it is caused by old blade. Unless they installed old one in the factory...

Mine has also done this since Day One -- noise on the back-stroke, just before reaching the "park" position. I must remember to have the dealer look at this next week when the box goes in for an oil change.

wow am I glad i'm not the only one, I've had this problem since day one of my purchase and I always thought it must've been because it was dry, (even though it did it when it was wet) plus it never really "wiped" properly. Anyone know where to get a good wiper blade for the money (and I don't like to go to the dealership for such small things)

I suspect that this is caused by the wiper arm itself. The way it is molded. I think that the bend in it has somethingto do with this. And it is made of plastic. Plastic is springy.

I think it is due to the fact that the rear window barely gets wet. It would be fairly easy to test with a light spray from a hose...

never noticed with mine...but then it never gets wet..

I have a different wiper blade noise issue. The front wipers have a tendency to rattle when I'm driving. I'm sure it is the wipers because the rattle goes away when I turn them on, and comes back with them off. The car is under a month old, and it's been doing this since the day of delivery. Can the wiper arm tension be adjusted or will aftermarket blades get rid of this?

Mine does it too...I never got to bothered by it cus I never use it. Only to show people that it really does work when they ask why mine is backwards and insist that it is broke

Yeah, wipers are for pussies! ;)

I don't use mine because the rain we have here usually comes straight down and isn't enough to keep that back wiper wet enough. I'd love it if it had an intermittent setting.

The problem is that the window doesn't generally get wet enough for the wiper to work properly. It's useful in heavier rain, but otherwise, it's just the sound of rubber on dry glass.

Hmm... I live in New England and I use the rear wiper pretty much everytime I drive in the rain. It is not so much rain that gathers on it as it is the gunk kicked up by the rear tires. I find it quite handy and helpful.

Mine doesn't make a sound, it is sitting on my self in the garage.

so is there any wiper or anything to cure this noise?

My rear wiper was one of the first things to go. What a waste of money that was? A rear wiper is useless on an xB and all it does is scratch the rear glass and vibrate like heck when the bass hits.
Keep the rear window clean and waxed and you will always be able to see out of it. I've never had a problem seeing out it during ANY weather.

I've had better luck with blades made of silicone. Just don't know if you can get a rear silicone blade.

Definitely. Just buy the shortest blade you can find and cut it down, then slide it into wiper arm. I had to do that with my last car's windshield when the silicone blades were first coming out and didn't have a complete fitment range yet.
Better yet, just coat your rear window with Rain-X, and take that rattly wiper off altogether!

I personally think the wiper is a useless waste of money, I have never needed to use it. I just don't want to remove it and put one of those Home Depot plugs in it, I dislike those even more. I will just wait for a new paintjob and have the entire rear of the car shaved.
