View Full Version : Poll: Carbon Fiber xA hood
fluxmr2spyder 07-16-2004, 06:59 AM are there any xA owners out there feelin left out for the after market parts?
if i can get a 10 hood order of a Scion xA hood, i wll make them in carbon fiber (in the same colors as my hoods and trunks for the xB)
*so if you xA guys are interested, now is the time to leave feedback ideas and requests, maybe my company MOTOR FX, can help you out with this particular part.*
mikochu 07-16-2004, 04:32 PM I'm interested, but I am broke right now... :(
a hood with a reverse scoop would be nice...everyone and their mom have OEM CF hoods...

fluxmr2spyder 07-16-2004, 10:49 PM I'm interested...but it would all depend on the price.....
the most it would cost is 350 + 100 for colors...but it can get cheaper not more expensive!
iglcrair 07-17-2004, 05:08 AM A carbon-fiber hood scoop for under $300, and im in.

Back_In_Black_xA 07-17-2004, 06:22 PM Wait doesn't VIS make a CF hood? I had a VIS on my Civic and the quality is excellent. I would go with them if I got a hood on the xA but the stock hood weighs nearly nothing because it is so small so I almost don't see the point.

cme42ns 07-20-2004, 03:03 AM I would think about it to replace my stone chipped xA hood instead of repairing it.
Anyone else think the paint chips real easy on these things?

NOT a post for rock chips, but a Carbon Fiber hood, will keep that from happening since there is no paint to chip, plus you get a few pounds weight savings and better cooling and induction capabilities, since my company is trying to make VENTED hoods for the xA...

Ok what would venting do?

mikochu 07-20-2004, 09:34 PM Ok what would venting do?
Help with engine cooling. Cool air enterrs through the grill and exits through the vents...air flow =D
fluxmr2spyder 07-20-2004, 10:56 PM Ok what would venting do?
Help with engine cooling. Cool air enterrs through the grill and exits through the vents...air flow =D
plus it has the added effect of looking different from the OEM hoods...lil bit of performance touch, and a lil bit of style touch
*keep in mind my Carbon Fiber Products are Vacuum sealed, and UV protected, so it wont turn yellow and the weave stays tight!*
the_drizzle 07-21-2004, 12:34 AM the reverse scoop sounds sick. I have hail damage on my hood, but really, I would love to have a custom mod like that. One question: Will having a large opening in the hood have any negative effects on the engine when it rains...ie taking in water through an aftermarket intake :?:

a lil bit of water a lil bit of dirt, but the intake is nowhere close to the hoods opening...
plus just for the added safety you can always run an AEM airbypass valve, or better yet reinstall the OEM hood...

fugeelama 07-25-2004, 09:52 PM Bump (again, and again, and again!!!)
I was out at an autocross in Milwaukee today, and seeing a CF vented hood on a silver S2000 made me want one for my white xA... like it's been said before on here though, if it's $350 or less i'm in!
BLAZETIGER 07-26-2004, 06:35 AM My wife won and we are getting an xA over the tC (will wait for an RS version). Interested in a non-OEM CF hood since I like the reversed scoops. Something similar to the Invader hood on my Sentra.

and if you guys are still interested in the vented hood lets get 10 deposits for $100 ea. plus a donor hood and we'll start the production
Not trying to intrude on this, but I'm having one made, which should be finished in a couple months. The guy has said that he might try to put the into production. It'll have a dual reverse scoop and possibly have the Scion logo embossed on the front. When we get the mold finished, I'll post some pictures if you guys want to see what a hood would look like with that style.

i have OEM style also in stock...as you can see my sig...but we are tryin to see who would be interested in a "vented" style hood???
like i said we get a design and 10 pre orders and i will give it a go with my company...
lemme know what u guys wanna do?
Ashe_WCM 08-26-2004, 07:30 PM Do you have a design yet?
I was thinking one with a single vent that went almost the entire width of the hood. about 1 inch high. basic same idea as the old chevy hotrod cowlings. only smaller and about 3 inches from the windshield edge of the hood. if the vent had a actual bottom in it we could mount the windshield washer nozzles inside out of sight.
I'll try and draw something up and post my Idea later tonite.
Anyways I'm very interested.
iglcrair 08-26-2004, 07:37 PM All of you have good ideas... now lets see some pics!
empleh 08-26-2004, 07:42 PM i don't wanna be anal, but i am interested. can you make a drawing of what your hood vented would look like? cause i've seen some horribly ugly ones, and some really nice ones....
fluxmr2spyder 08-26-2004, 10:42 PM you guys post your designs up...
then we can all vote on the one style we want seen as a full production peice...
...sorry im not an artist but a business man...
draw a design and ill make it...
so please post the pictures up and we can do a vote on the 1 we like the most...
empleh 08-27-2004, 01:17 AM well, what i was wondering is if the scoop has to protrude so far out of the hood? the one they make for the wrx is nice....i know our hood is shorter, but just wondering if that would work? http://www.turboxs.com/_images/02WRX2.jpg
something like that....

Yeah thats just what I was thinking only have the reverse scoop only protrude 1-2 inches at the most.
runforestrun 08-27-2004, 05:28 AM For you guys who want the "HOOD SCOOP" why even wait for a CF hood? Here ya go...it even comes with 2-sided tape!http://www.reygun.com/airhoopscoop.jpg

lets get it started...
This is close to what mine will look like, just to give you guys an idea...

Here is a close-up of the vent...
http://www.syndicatekustomz.com/prototypes/scionvph/scionhdpro2.jpg
It's not going to be sealed off like that in the front part of the V. We had to put that there just to keep it in place until it gets molded.
Once we get it finished, we'll paint it and I'll take some more picutres before we send it out to be made out of CF.
empleh 08-31-2004, 09:34 PM just curious, because the hood is so small and slanted, would a rear facing scoop totally be worthless? i kinda wanted it for the cooling effect...sucking out the hot air...but was wondering if that point is moot? and i know it won't make my car uber fast.
chucksu 08-31-2004, 09:51 PM On the subject what would it take to get a Carbon Fiber rear hatch? I think that would offer more weight savings then the hood.
fluxmr2spyder 08-31-2004, 10:55 PM On the subject what would it take to get a Carbon Fiber rear hatch? I think that would offer more weight savings then the hood.
u know i make it for the xb...so if we get 10 pre order with deposits i can make it for sure....my conact is below...holla at me
iglcrair 09-01-2004, 04:34 PM Mikochu that CF hood is sweet! Where can I get one of those?
Xa05DieselJr 09-01-2004, 06:36 PM I would definitely be interested in this if the price is right. When I ordered the options for my xA, they added labor for something that wasn't there and then they found out that the quickshifter was not available anymore for the xA, so I have a little extra cash to work with. I will make a drawing of what I would want it to look like if it were me designing it and send it to you.
empleh 09-01-2004, 08:00 PM are we gonna need hood pins? please no.
Ashe_WCM 09-05-2004, 01:40 AM Here's my Idea submission..
Forgive the fact that I am a poor artist.
http://216.77.188.54/coDataImages/p/Groups/225/225425/folders/165004/1216875CFHood.jpg
Upper left is a cutaway of the hood at midway.
the vent is 1 inch high inside measurement. the lower area has a slight bend downward to assist in directing airflow. Hopefully we could install the winshield sprayers underneath the vent hood to hide them.
upper right is a top view. only thing i was trying to show here is that the vent is about 2 inches from the edge of the hood.
lower left is a rear view as the driver would see the intake. no sharp edges. it's all rounded in a Giger-esque kind of way.
lower right is a front (kinda) view. showing how the vent rises from the hood near the rear.
So what does everyone think? I know I am not a good artist but hopefully everyone can see the idea I have.

I would not mind seeing something like that one but have the hump end at the edge of the hood.
Ashe_WCM 09-27-2004, 01:39 PM Anything new on this?
chucksu 09-27-2004, 05:38 PM  I think we are still waiting for some ppl to take a vote on 1 design, also he needs 10 deposits before anything starts.
empleh 09-27-2004, 06:09 PM i think i've kinda come to the conclusion that the scoop wouldn't look right because of the length and angle of our hood.....dunno though i could be wrong. i think it's gonna have to stick out to much.

since ive picked up a rs xa, i kinna like how this style looks and i know it will also be functional as an exit for hot air, and help in front end downforce....i might just have to reduce the scale ti fit an xa properly wih out lookin like its"too much or over done" let me know if you guys like this design so we can start our Group Buy Special Order...remember 10 pre orders are needed to start this project so lets get the ball rollling and start preordering NOW...thank you!
Ashe_WCM 09-27-2004, 08:15 PM three qwick questions.
First like Chucksu said about moving the vent closer to the windheild. is that how you planned on doingit?
second, will it work using the OEM hardware including locking mechanism or will it need hood pins?
Lastly, How much?

i can definetly move it towards the windsheild, it will use all OEM hardware but as a manufacturer i would recomand the use of hoodpins, even tho i dont use any on any of my hoods, lastly as a group buy it looks like it will cost $350 UV coated and everything
Kodokan_4 09-28-2004, 12:02 AM I want a hood for my xA with a vent that is similar to the Amuse hood on my S2000:
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/Kodokan/DSC00063.jpg
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/Kodokan/DSC00067.jpg
The vent reduces the engine compartment temperature A LOT! The lip on the front of the vent adds a small amount of downforce to the front end.
I would like to draw up a proper design for the vented xA hood, if it's not too late. I'm getting crushed with work from anesthesia school, but I'd be willing to spend some time on the hood design, if there is a chance it will get into production.

Is this the hood you are talking about? Your links dont seem to show up.
http://www.bulletproofautomotive.com/items/41.jpg
Kodokan_4 09-28-2004, 12:09 AM Yeah. Of course the vent would be wider on the xA, and wouldn't go so far back. The dimensions need to be appropriate for the xA hood.
The hood vent on the car in this pic is also similar to what I'm talking about. IMO it doesn't look very good on this car because of the front end design, but it will look GREAT on the xA (if done properly).

empleh 09-28-2004, 12:57 AM yeah, i like that one too, i just not sure we can pull it off on a xA, because of the length and angle of the hood.
fluxmr2spyder 09-28-2004, 01:06 AM Yeah. I don't know what's up with my pics. I'm working on it.

I'll try to get it done, but I'm really limited on time.
It would be great if someone could post an outline of the xA hood. I'll download it and print it out, and use the blanks to sketch vent designs.

PS- I fixed all of the pics on page 3.

mikochu 10-02-2004, 05:47 PM HEY! Stop posting links from your yahoo email! We can't see them!
Kodokan_4 10-02-2004, 06:26 PM I've determined the size, shape, and placement of the vent (and it took a lot of time).
I didn't use my S2000 as a pattern, I worked completely off the dimensions of the xA - but the shape and measurements are very similar.
http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v480/Kodokan/xAVent.jpg
The rest of the design work is easy.
I can't photoshop exactly how it should look, but this is getting closer to what I want.

latinotke639 10-02-2004, 07:12 PM would it be $350 w/ shipping? is there anyway we could lower that?
chucksu 10-03-2004, 12:00 AM Kodokan_4 I like those ideas, I think that black out grille looks kick to. Man they need to make more things for the xA
fluxmr2spyder 10-03-2004, 12:34 AM would it be $350 w/ shipping? is there anyway we could lower that? rite now its about 350 w/out shipping...we'll see how well this comes out
empleh 10-03-2004, 12:54 AM just curious, i was kicking around the idea of a carbon fiber rear spoiler, exactly like oem, but just made of carbon fiber. is that something your company would do? cause i know my dealership won't sell carbon fiber hoods....but, they probably would go for a carbon fiber rear spoiler.

Yes I would not mind having a option for something like this. The xB gets so many CF parts, while we xA ppl set on the side lines
Kodokan_4 10-03-2004, 01:45 AM Vent size and placement shown below. The lip around the vent opening will be similar to the one on my S2000 (pic above). The vent opening will flare out a bit more when the trailing edges of the lip are added.
I examined a lot of variables including what engine parts are directly under the vent, size of the radiator, basic airflow through the engine compartment, dimentions of the engine compartment, lines of the exterior hood, etc.

I agree with mikochu. This hood is close to what I'm looking for, but IMO, the design doesn't flow with the car.
Since I've been working on a vented hood design, I understand how easy it is to make a bad looking hood. Moving something 1/4 inch can make a HUGE difference in the way it looks.
I've tried to incorporate the lines of the OEM hood into my design. The vent utilizes the curvature of the rear of the hood. The leading edge of the lip utilizes the curvature of the front of the hood (In the above pics the leading edge is straight).
The only design element still to be determined is the angle and length of the trailing edges of the lip. I have to decide between a couple of choices, but the only definitive way is to mock it up.
-Pete
Kodokan_4 10-06-2004, 09:24 PM looking good
If you are still interested in my design when it is done, feel free to use it. I'm not looking to make money off of it, I just want to get something I like into production.
I could probably have my design manufactured by Mastergrade, or a couple of other companies I have worked with, but I'm not interested in retailing aftermarket hoods, and one-offs are pretty expensive, so anyone that wants to produce it is cool with me!

I don't have the right xA pic to cut and paste the Audi bumper.
This is all I can do right now. I'm off to work a 17-hour shift at the hospital (2PM-7AM).

Kodokan_4 10-07-2004, 04:15 PM Many of the latest bumper designs from Japan are now using a large rectangle opening in the front. It's more radical design than most aftermarket bumpers available for the xA. I like the OEM style xA bumper, and the bumper on the Audi above, but they are not very different than other bumpers, like the kenstyle, etc.
I would like to see someone produce a bumper with a large rectangular opening, the same width as the xA grille opening. There would be a splitter on the bottom. I don't have time to do a good photoshop now, but I can work on one soon. I think it will look awesome, and it's very different from what's out there now. It won't be as wild looking as the S2000 below, but the design would be somewhat similar:

PS - It's best if the side vents are functional, or if they have removable inserts, so we can install a CAI or brake ducting.
fluxmr2spyder 10-07-2004, 07:19 PM kodokan: i meant the side vents on the hood...great job on the bumper anyway
Kodokan_4 10-10-2004, 07:01 PM Still needs more work, but I like it. The splitter below the bumper needs some more photoshopping. I want to put a black screen in the opening, similar to the OEM type. I think it's going to look great with my vented hood design.

That looks nice. but originally we were discussing a vented/cowl hood. lots of scooped hoods out there.
How does it get secured in the front?
Uses the stock latches, or do you have to install post and pin the hood down?

Ashe_WCM 02-06-2005, 08:24 PM I think Motor FX was looking for one more design style so he could start a Poll and let everyone vote on thier favorite, I think he has 3 and wants 4

Oh well no voting for me.
fluxmr2spyder 02-10-2005, 03:36 AM POLL: http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=46277&highlight=
Ashe_WCM 02-10-2005, 03:08 PM I know, I just don't want to distract from the topic there.\
I dont know where the s2000 hood came from but some how it replaced the "drift" hood. And all the current choices are exactly the same as every other aftermarket hood out there so there is no need to vote. If I want one I can just wait till the vote is over or just go get one somewhere else.
tlspatt 02-16-2005, 03:19 PM i'll take the one off the ferrari, please! sign me up
Ashe_WCM 02-16-2005, 03:24 PM Yeah!
Give me a hood with a scoop to feed air to my top mount intercooler!
It's a good thing I have a top mount intercooler or otherwise I would just be adding to the drag I have to overcome.
Oni-Haya 02-17-2005, 03:42 AM I don't have the top mounted intercooler yet ... but it is on my list. ---> http://www.trdparts.jp/turbo-catalog-ist.html
