When I bought my VW beetle I had to read and sign a paper that I had been notified that I was not to use regular type snow chains on my tires. Does anyone know what type of snow "chains" are to be used or not used on the xB?

It all depends on where you live. Check with the DMV in your area for more information.

Use SAE class "S" type radial tire chains except radial cable chains or V-bar type chains.

Type "S" are conventional chains designed for limited clearance.

I'm a bit puzzled that cable chains are not recommended. They are usually the best choice for FWD cars with limited tire clearance. they are also easier on the fenders if one of the cross-links breaks.

Personally, I'd be very leery of running an xB in the snow. The first little drift will wipe out a lot of expensive plastic!
