toyota design project
hi everyone, my names Tim O'Donnell and im a student at College For Creative Studies majoring in Automotive design. Toyota has approached us this year and asked to design a bridge vehichle for existing scion owners to buy in 2012. it seems that xb and xa owners are very interested in being return buyers to toyota and purchasing trucks or fj40's however the options in actuall cars for a scion owner to buy from toyota are limited to camry and corolla which many tc owners would just rather not have altogether.
my purpose in starting this thread is to get some feedback from all owners but especially tc owners on what kind of toyota they would like to purchase in the future.
so if you all have some opinions abou tthings you like, don't like, or even want to do some sketches and post them up to show me that will be great/ and in return i'll take photos each week of my progress and try to make sure you all are happy with how the project is going.
thats all for now. please let your opinions known as this is your chance to make an affect since we are working directly with calty.

First of all please take down my name and pm if possible. I am very interested in this project because i have wanted to go into automotive design in the past.
I think alot of us are gonna grow out of the sport compact scene after 6 years because generally speaking we mature in our behaviors, buying especially, and in car choice especially. I think the scion tc owner now greatly enjoys the sport compact but in the future would definitely be more interested in a more grownup version. Sporty, 6 cylinder, rwd, somewhat spacious inside. Im leaning towards a fourdoor but im clinging on a two door... but i think in the future people would generally want a froudoor for convenience. i think something like a toyota supra wouldnt hurt either... Im jumping from point to point but all in all a tc owner isnt gonna go back to a sport compact later on. it has to be faster, bigger, and a better paint job lol.

Tim,
Don't let Toyota fill your mind with absurdities like xA and xB owners are limited to camrys and corollas. There are a lot of older xB owners who could afford any car they really wanted. That being said--ask Toyota to show you a picture of the Open Deck that was based on the bB (xB) platform. It would be a real seller here in the US--that is if it would pass DOT specs. Good luck on your project.

im familiar with the platform, they want us to come up with some completely new ideas though so even integrating drivetrains that are in concept stage right now arent acceptable. this thing can be really crazy which is really exciting.
Something sleek, aggressive looking, a bit of power to match it. If we are talking 2012 I would like to see it Hydrogen-hybrid powered.
Rotary engine
Yeah...like that would ever happen

Bring back the MRs, bring over the Chaser, bring back the all-tracs (dare I say trueno or levin trims of the corolla).
Toyota has it's whole "MPG" thing going on (which I think is lame cause Honda has better fuel efficiency)... I wouldn't mind saving some gas but driving a car that doesn't look like a complete weiny drives it.
Hatchbacks are always a nice thing and maybe even a wagon down the road--something with big capacity.
I mean, retro seems to be the big thing (I dunno about 6 years down the road), but try looking at some of Toyota's past great achievements.
Maybe something inbetween a normal sized sedan and an SUV.
btw, I can't believe we're already into the first 6 years of the new millenium... i'm still used to the 90's and we still see lots of cars from the 90's driven around....
It's quite a dilemna that people don't know how to handle RWD (which is why the late Celica was reintroduced in fwd)... even more ashame that people can't handle MRs, I miss those things... i want my spyder back (not that I ever had one)
oh yea, look at the cool tricks the element can do--I'd be very interested in stuff like that if I were to have a family or something.

I would love to buy a RWD hatchback high rev car in the future (trueno style) as far as appearance the tC in looks for me is perfect as i like the car's lines and everything. Just make sure no rattles go into production.
If you're looking more into a 4 door car then I would like to see the fuse the doors like the rx8 and a 3sgte engine 4wd not necesarily to compete with the evo or sti but if you do then i'll buy
The open deck would also we nice to have it in this side of the world too since its economic and it's open deck could get usefull from time to time.
Hope this helps out and be part of history

I would love to see a slightly bigger version of the Toyota Sera. When it was sold, it was a little too small and not enough power for my taste. However, it does go along with Scion's "wow" factor in vehicles with the way the doors opened as well as the glass that went from the door to the roof. It reminds me of the tC because the Sera had problems with the "greenhouse" effect because of all the glass. Make it a little bigger, throw the 2AZ-FE (or 13B-TII or 13B-REW
I'd like to see something similiar to the tC, option-wise. More power would be nice, so would a 6 cyl. I wouldn't go for rwd though. I'd keep it a hatch because, for me, it's so convienant. I wouldn't go for a 4 door, I'd keep it a coupe.
A hybrid of some sort would also be nice.

First of all, I must say that I'm Gen~X and not Gen~Y like the demographic "was" for the tC.
With that said, by 2012 I'd be hoping on a Lexus sedan.
However, for my interests @ this point in time there is a serious lack of options from the Toyota line.
Coupe Concept:
With the Supra & MR lines gone, there are no serious performance models. I'd love to see the Supra reborn with a lighter but stronger chassis so it can handle like a rally car, but be able to takeoff like a jet.
In terms of styling, that's hard to say without "biting" someone elses "style" - but hey, everything evolves from somewhere right?
After looking @ tons concept pix it's rare to find Timeless classics, and a lot of designs get played out as soon as the "trend" is over (i.e. Altezza taillight biters! not to mention any names... *cough*- insert car here _____ )
The kind of car I'd Love to own would be one that looks like it could literally fly if it had wings ~ Formula1 aerodynamic & GT mixed.
Sedan Concept:
I highly doubt Toyota needs help in the catagory since it has so many models to choose from. The only thing I think they're lacking is a true performance sedan. AWD, rallyable, and maybe with F/I... Basically powerful enough to take on anything from an M5 to an EVO. Essentially take your pick of a sedan to mod and Toyota would have a legit platform to work with. Personally, I'd like to see a mix between the Lexus lines (GS & IS, but with more of an IScoupeConcept flavor).
SUT/SUV Concept:
Okay, so since I'm a Gen~X'er, I'm thinking more along the lines of an Automobile that CAN DO IT ALL.
My idea is in essence a performance hardtop convertible SUT/SUV.
There would be a bed section that can be utilized like a truck, but will also turn into a full SUV when needed. The retracting portion would be a hardtop and could have multiple functions (like perhaps a roof extension on mobile homes with a dropdown monitor/projector for outdoor events). The vehicle would also have ALL the essentials any vehicle has, plus command center capability. Truck functionality like tow capacity is a must, and maybe incorporate rear folding seats for when the unit transforms into truck mode.
For the power plant, I'm throwing in the idea of a Hydro/Electic/Gas Tribrid.
I'm sure there are a ton of additions that can be added (i.e. front tow line, water filtering system, hydro electric generator, etc...), but for now I think thats good enough for a rough draft. =)
Here is a good site for future ideas for a concept, it's not much but is still something that many people might want. Maybe you can take some ideas from here.==>> http://superscions.com/viewtopic.php?t=3 Also some ideas would be:
Hard top option, with V-6 or 4 inline turbo engine, 6Spd option or 5spd, All Wheel drive option and/or Traction ON/OFF button. What else...Projector headlights.... or ....erm... Performance 2AZ under the hood or a better performing engine. I don't know...for the visual I was thinking something in the range of a coupe, in the range of japanese GT spec cars, working aerodynamics maybe, Stronger suspension points, like stiffer sway bars, maybe like the TRD sway bar on the tC. Better interiors that we have now. Maybe braking bents to cool the brakes some more. Maybe if a V-6 option come, it can be over the range 210 hp. If I think of other things, believe me, I WILL POST THEM.

basically what I think we want in the future, is going to be a car with serious performance, but sleek and a slightly understated look. A car that doesn't scream "hey I'm 16 and have a gazillion HP" but a car for a serious young adult that looks professional but at the same time can leave other cars in the dust when need be...
