View Full Version : Discontinued
THE_DON 09-13-2006, 04:11 PM As we all know, while the bB is on it's 3rd gen bodystyle in Japan, the Scion xB was officially discontinued.
http://pressroom.toyota.com/Releases/View?id=TYT2006091198974
Considering it started out as an '04 model (late '03) and there will be no '07, that means it was on the road for 3 model years. How do you feel about that? How do you think other people will feel about that? I mean, people usually like long running nameplates, and not cars that last a few years and get dropped. With the current retro trend, they're even bringing back old car names from the grave.
I Understand that Scion stated from the very beginning that they would remain on the cutting edge with a small line-up of cars that would run for short periods of time... I REMEMBER them saying that, but it didn't really mean much in December of '03 when I was one of the few people driving around in that weird looking new box-car. I totally forgot about it until I felt the sting of hearing that my new car is now being discontinued. Already!!?? Damn, that was quicker than I thought! I haven't even paid it off yet!
-THE DON
paul_mnly 09-13-2006, 04:14 PM I think that they should continue making them. The box has been getting more sales day by day and im sure once they discontinue it, they will notice the drop in revenue becuase of the box.
Big_Bird 09-13-2006, 04:17 PM i dont know if this is true, i think scion would have sent out a press release or something, and what about the rs3 xA and rs4 xB, i think this is bogus
ricktoyota73 09-13-2006, 04:18 PM There is an xB replacement in the works. I think I remember seeing a spy shot on here at one time, and the funky bB replacement from Japan.
As long as parts are still available, which they should be, I wouldn't be real concerned.
Neothin 09-13-2006, 04:21 PM when i first got my tC, i hated everything about the box. nowadays though, i've come to love it.
if this is true, i'm going to miss the box :(
kkawana 09-13-2006, 04:32 PM i dont know if this is true, i think scion would have sent out a press release or something, and what about the rs3 xA and rs4 xB, i think this is bogus
the xA i think is gonna still be made for a few more years..havent seen anything about that line ending.....yet..
the RS4 xB is gonna be the last off the xB production line tho... then the new style and probably new/different model name...
as for parts... no matter how short a run.. i believe federal laws for cars say they have to have OEM parts availible for 10yrs or something like that. plus between japan and u.s. after market parts... and the fact that both the xA and xB share lots of running parts with the echo.... keeping them running shouldnt be a problem
whatulookinat 09-13-2006, 04:36 PM The current model XB will remain exclusive and the value will hold, which will be good for all.
THE_DON 09-13-2006, 04:43 PM i dont know if this is true, i think scion would have sent out a press release or something, and what about the rs3 xA and rs4 xB, i think this is bogus
From Scion:
Scion To Launch Two New Models In The Spring of 2007 To Replace Current Generation xA And xB
September 12, 2006 – Torrance, CA - Scion, from Toyota Motor Sales (TMS), U.S.A. Inc., will launch two new vehicles in spring 2007 to replace current generation xA and xB.
"The xA and xB will always be very special models for us and have contributed greatly to Scion's success, but we're ready to move into our next product phase," said Mark Templin, vice president, Scion. "Scion is a laboratory for change and we will continue to experiment and evolve to meet the needs of our customers."
Doesn't sound like a re-design to me. Sounds like "replacement" with new models. I wish they would keep the xB name, but it doesn't look like it.
-THE DON
witelite 09-13-2006, 04:57 PM that suxs...iv been really wanting one. i was hoping to get a 2007 model next year sometime.
i know there trying to make everything all cutting edge and stuff. but why fix something that isnt broken?
the sales on xb's are great, why discontinue a car that everyone wants?
inversed 09-13-2006, 05:03 PM The dealer just called to say my xB is finally in and I should be able to pick it up Friday after the rustproofing/fabric warranty stuff.
I find this news just a little disconcerting...
edit:
in a way it makes sense. Kinda of like the exclusivity thing. They want to remain cutting edge, they don't want another pt cruiser scenario...
JDMJim 09-13-2006, 05:13 PM You know, the more I think about it, I feel the new style bB in Japan would prolly sell really well here. Just send it.
TuningIsLife 09-13-2006, 06:20 PM Inversed. You hit the nail on the head. Scion does not want another Pt Cruiser or even VW Beetle thing.
New models:
xD (4 door hatch), 08 (1.8L)
t2b based suv, 08 (2.4L)
Fuse based coupe. 09 (?.?L)
THE_DON 09-13-2006, 06:44 PM I was thinking the t2B concept would be the new xB, but it looks like it will get a whole new name.
Scion did say that they would keep a "box" design, but it doesn't look like it will be named xB.
Current tC owners should be looking closely at the the Fuse concept. 2007 is the tC's 3rd model year and Scion is already showing design ideas for a sporty coupe. See any patterns here?
-THE DON
jdmgwagon 09-13-2006, 06:52 PM I guess it was a good idea to lease...lol... and I have done a ton of mods to it... oh well... I will probably just keep the thing when it is up... only 4k to buy... then get another one lol
Boxer_Rebellion 09-13-2006, 10:00 PM What all this means is that the xB will become more of an icon :)
Keitaro 09-13-2006, 10:35 PM What all this means is that the xB will become more of an icon :)
I already consider the xB to be an icon in the same playing field as the original Beetle, original Mini, and the original Mustang.
Kudos to Toyota for killing the car while it is still hot vs. killing it when market demand is low.
fokusco 09-13-2006, 10:43 PM While I think this is a great idea on Toyotas part, I am dissapointed because I wanted to get another new one later on down the road... I drive ALOT and I would like to be able to feel another NEW xB in 5 or 6 years... sad sad sad
Madzozs 09-13-2006, 10:46 PM I almost wish I had the cash to buy 2 of the RS4's when they come out. One to drive, and one to keep in the garage. Eventually to sell or show.
DarkLighter 09-13-2006, 10:53 PM Scion did say that they would keep a "box" design, but it doesn't look like it will be named xB.
Yeah, I think they would lose some major ground to totally go away from a "box" design and try to hype something completely different. Yes, I bet it will be "boxy", not the same but still "boxy".
cherryBox 09-13-2006, 11:11 PM What all this means is that the xB will become more of an icon :)
I am absolutely THRILLED that this 'rumor' has now been proven as fact.
Jenna 09-14-2006, 12:52 AM What all this means is that the xB will become more of an icon :)
Absolutely! :)
rallying_the_scion 09-14-2006, 01:01 AM got to love a company that keeps its customers on their toes. Would be cool to have a car they only made for a few years, but then again, the xB is a hot seller, and i love seeing more and more on the road!!!
TRDBox 09-14-2006, 01:08 AM http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e238/013003/IMG_1054.jpg
cool now ill have 2 rare vehicles
but at least there not going to bomb the production plant of the xb like they did the Yugo
hahahaha lol
brambling 09-14-2006, 01:10 AM I would rather them continue it for greater accessibilty of parts.
A car that has sold 140,000 is hardly unique. Different, maybe.
Oh well the Yaris will keep the NCP alive in the US.
boogi_man 09-14-2006, 01:17 AM i am excited i was just talking about this with the wife today. was thinking about how upsetting it would be to not have as unique a car as i thought i would. i agree that the toaster has the same appeal as the first gen beetle etc i would have liked to see maybe another year with the xB just to see how far the aftermarket would go
however i am glad overall to here that the toaster will be a short run car
brambling 09-14-2006, 01:20 AM i am excited i was just talking about this with the wife today. was thinking about how upsetting it would be to not have as unique a car as i thought i would.
That would really upset you?
I guess we should cheer every wrecked xB for making it more rare and us cooler!
ziggy3211 09-14-2006, 01:31 AM Glad I got my xB earlier this year! Getting parts won't be an issue - the box shares a lot of parts with other Toyota's. This decision by Toyota will keep the xB a unique vehicle.
boogi_man 09-14-2006, 01:33 AM i am excited i was just talking about this with the wife today. was thinking about how upsetting it would be to not have as unique a car as i thought i would.

well yeah it would being as though one of the selling points was that scion wasn't going to have on going name plates like all the other car co.s out there. i am really tired of having a vehicle(s) that have millions on the road, except for my old bug. i remember reading rumors that scion was going to go ahead and keep the xB because of it's popularity.
as far as wishing the horrible fortune of a wreck on anyone not ever not even my enimies.
at the same time it'll take less time for these cars to become sought after collectibles due to limited production #'s and the rs's even more so.
Reactor 09-14-2006, 02:11 AM VW Beetle is a great proof that a car can be unique regardless of how many thousands or millions were produced. When it was announced back in '78 that it will be last year for German made Bug they were sold out immediately even though they have passed their popularity peak. Alot of people wanted to get them even though they didn't have much use for the car. For that reason it is not too difficult to find a low mileage '78 today, but prepare to pay 10 to 15K for a good cabrio.
Expect similar thing to happen to xB. It is a cult car allready and it is unique for US market. In the age of throwaway compacts this one stand out as something that you can have an emotional connection to.
I wish they keep making them as long as they sell, but if the first US gen xB was just a "tester"'- it did GREAT. I am happy I got one. As anyone with the Box will agree, there is alot room for improvement, and Toyota will do just that, hopefully.
brambling 09-14-2006, 03:03 AM Well, the xB/bB is unique as far as I know it is the only box wagon based on a b-car chassis.
jwaj2002 09-14-2006, 03:19 AM from my understand(from another thread on here related to the xa) its going to be on the corrolla chassis, which means manual 6 speed options for the XB! and I also understood they would keep the name
bBlover 09-14-2006, 03:25 AM JIT!! I love my xB!! ;)
Madzozs 09-14-2006, 03:29 AM http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e238/013003/IMG_1054.jpg
Okay, apparently everyone forgot the importance of this picture. He has a friggin Yugo.
rallying_the_scion 09-14-2006, 06:40 AM i noticed that, looks like a older 92 year model ford car my dad had.
Madzozs 09-14-2006, 02:18 PM You mean a Ford Aspire? Those things were hilarious.
Gsnorgathon 09-14-2006, 08:17 PM I've got mixed feelings about it. Exclusivity is all well and good, but the fewer xBs sold, the smaller the aftermarket is likely to be. I'd better start learning how to fab!
TRDBox 09-14-2006, 09:41 PM thanx madzozs
you know you like it
haha lol
TheScionicMan 09-14-2006, 10:13 PM You mean a Ford Aspire? Those things were hilarious.
Looks more like a Festiva to me.
I remember a comedian joking about seeing a Yugo... with The Club on the steering wheel. he said he broke in and stole the club cuz they're worth like 50 bucks...
First my Axis MagLites were discontinued, then the Camo color and now the whole freakin' car!
The Few, The Proud, The xBs
brambling 09-14-2006, 10:29 PM A Corolla platform would be fine by me. A little bit more power and about the same MPG.
rallying_the_scion 09-14-2006, 10:43 PM ya, the discontinued me xBs color to, crazy, i saw more of them the same color as mine as any!!!
Madzozs 09-15-2006, 02:19 AM I'm kinda glad they stopped making Camo because I would've traded my car in for one instead of waiting for the RS4.
kevets 09-15-2006, 02:20 AM 06 is the final year? wow
io333 09-15-2006, 04:05 AM Incredible that you keep that Yugo going. Amazing. But how do you do it? Do you replace every part every day? Seriously, I remember seeing them "new" with less than 1000 miles (yes, one thousand) on them with every major part broken: engine/bearings/starter/alternator/transmission/cluch/interiorparts/steering/brakes all completely broken.
Is there some kin of aftermarket that makes more durable parts, or do you just not drive it?
http://i40.photobucket.com/albums/e238/013003/IMG_1054.jpg

It you look closely you will see that there is a hotwheels sticker on that Yugo. That is a cleverly disguised hotwheel toy that has been photographed to make it appear to be a real car...........

Anyway, I think I've come to terms with it. I shaved all of my badges anyway. As long as Scion sells a "boxy" car it's cool.
Maybe they'll rename it the Scion bOX. That could work for me. :ponder:

BabelBox 09-15-2006, 05:29 PM I should have gotten the RS1 instead of the BSP. There was one available when I was buying my car.
saddlesore 09-17-2006, 07:52 PM IMHO...
I feel that Toyota is screwing the pooch by cutting off the xB production so soon after introduction (region by region)..the xB has really taken off, first in Cali., then the NW, now it is getting good sales in the south but the east coast and midwest have yet to reach their potential sales..
btw.. it's the "over 50" buyers that are boosting the xB's past the targeted sales...it just takes a while for us gray hairs to see the true potential of the box..
just my 1.75 cents worth
tadXB 09-17-2006, 10:15 PM WOW!
I'm speachless....Here I am just two weeks ago and I'm trying to figure out what car to buy. My girl points out the xB. Has I start comparing I'm falling in love with it. Here I am, waiting to pick it later this week, found this website, placing my first post. I feel like I'm in a dream.......
DaveKennedy 09-20-2006, 01:16 PM Well it's interesting that Scion decided in the final 6 months of production to introduce the steering wheel stereo controls. That should make xB's like my Salsa Red one actually a rare car.
And so much for "burnt penny" or whatever they were calling it...
rallying_the_scion 09-20-2006, 05:30 PM shut down the assembaly lines for 07, to redo them for the new xB? maybe thats why they are going away for a about a year time period, and suppose the new xB will be be built in canada and the us, correct me if im wrong , the gen 1 xB is built in japan and shipped, the first letter in the vin, J, which means the car is built in japan. For me, that was the biggest thing, my car wasnt built in the US like my 03 cavy.
mrfuzzy4 09-21-2006, 12:12 AM i think that everyone that does not already have one are getting shafted. i personally know like 8 people that want an xb as there next car, and now what! also that spy shot is of (i pray to every god out there)  some ugly fake butt scion. it looked like an HHR on ugly pills. :loser:
rallying_the_scion 09-21-2006, 12:16 AM Fell down theugly tree, hit every ugly branch, hit the ugly ground then beaten with the ugly stick to only has the ugly tree fall on its ugly ash.
JDMJim 09-21-2006, 12:20 AM I hear the new xB will be a slightly larger version of the now current bB
jwaj2002 09-21-2006, 03:11 AM thats what I hear Jim, and all of the scions are built 100% in japan
bB2NER 09-21-2006, 07:24 AM I'm fine with the xB going away. I just didn't appreciate the way they launched them. The inside states got ripped off big time. They have 1 full model year less of vehicles with which to use for resale and future parts cars. They should have been available nationwide all at once so I could have gotten an RS1.0 Lava instead of settling for BCP.
rallying_the_scion 09-21-2006, 07:27 AM ya, and think, the stoped makin BCP last year!!!
DaveKennedy 09-21-2006, 11:35 AM It's not like the xB is going to disappear from the face of the earth. There are tons of used one's on the market and still many for sale new, even if there isn't an '07.
BERLY 09-21-2006, 03:24 PM I agree with everyones comments, I just wish they would hurry
up and send me my new RS4, I can't wait to see or hear what will be on the darn thing... If anyone knows.... please post!!!
mrfuzzy4 09-21-2006, 11:32 PM THE COOLEST THING ABOOT THE XB IS ITS SIZE! a suv or truck xb is stupit! now what they need to do is make like an 80k super sportcar... just so we can say we one a car from the same company... lol i own an austin martin... and it cost 15k
JDMJim 09-22-2006, 03:01 AM just remember that Toyota-Japan is still producing old bB's(in a way) and new bB's side by side. I'm sure they want to cut production so they can focus on something else. so start sending us new bB's. they will sell and continue to infect the nation with ugly car. hahaha I say bring it on. I'll build one of those too.
bB2NER 09-23-2006, 03:54 AM I'm sure they want to cut production so they can focus on something else. so start sending us new bB's. .Hail NO, we don't want that turd over here
GreenLantern 09-23-2006, 04:25 AM mixed feelings on it..I too would like the production to stick around for a few more years...
....but on the flip side it will make these cars harder to find...and these are turning in to "cult" favorites, much like the old VW bugs and vans ...I see the resale value of these not dropping to fast .......only thing I will have to fight in the future is convincing the wife that we need to hang onto it
13edge 09-23-2006, 04:42 AM only thing I will have to fight in the future is convincing the wife that we need to hang onto it
C'mon bro... you're the Green Lantern! How hard can that be?

v1_Rotate 10-16-2006, 07:36 PM I give Scion props for sticking to their original model life span schedule. One thing is for sure, there will be a constant evolution, constant learning curve. Mistakes will be short lived (which is good).
I think Toyota misjudged the potential for the xB. It has sold amazingly well and is picking up in popularity across the board.
However, they made a plan and are sticking to it. Good for them.
