300 was my low which netted me 25 mpg mixed driving on 12 gallons

highway was 33 mpg and was 12 gallons as well 398 miles.

Car is a auto TC with under 1K mileage.

Normal driving with a few beatings since it is new.

1) Are you on "D" or "3"?

2) What is your engine RPM at highway speeds?

3) If you are on "D", how fast are you driving?

holy crap, 230?? I've gotten 360 miles while doing 80mph with a bike on the roof. when you "only get 230 miles", how many gallons do you put in it when you fill it up? miles / gallons between fill ups = mpg. :)

i just hit my best at 270.

60% highway going around 65-70mph

40% city going around 30-40mph

i dont step on it much but since its summer here in south tx the a/c is on about 95% of that time?

another thing, dont we have a 14.5 gal tank? Im only getting 12.5 when i fill it up, and thats when the pump thing clicks, i stop when it does that.

That seems kind of low for that much highway, the last tank for me(from full to quarter mark) was about 95% city and 5% highway and I was at 235 miles. I normally do almost all city driving and don't drive very slow and average about 200 miles(almost always put in 10 gallons).

For daily commute in the city, which is 100% city, I get an average of 22-25 mpg.

How on earth are you getting 580 a tank? Did you get the bigger gas tank mod? Or the smaller engine mod?

580 a tank is what hybrids are getting, I don't see how that's possible in a 2,900 lbs., aggresively geared, 2.4 liter car.

I get about 22mpg city and 25mpg hwy.

My wife's 4cyl solara gets better mileage. It's a heavier car too.

Toyota should fix the gearing on the 08 model. Give it a 6th gear or a taller final drive.

I get soo many comments on many other threads because people don't believe me. But I have a lightweight flywheel, Weapon R intake with ram air adapter, and custom exhaust with 3" pipes. And notice i said "best". I have only seen that twice. and that was goin to VA beach. I drove at night when it was nice and cool, and set the cruise at 70 and there was no other cars as traffic. But on average with only back and forth to work, i have been getting about 32-33 lately. And city driving is about 26mpg.

I know it sounds amazing but maybe my car is different. Like this guy is getting about 10mpg less than everyone, and i'm getting 10 mpg more, im not sure why but im not complaining.

And just for example when i pulled in to my spot at work today, my trip meter said 130mi and was just hitting 3/4 of a tank.

Personally i believe so. At first with just the SW WR intake i was getting about 26-28 highway at best. Then with the addition of the flywheel, im now seeing 28-30 highway when i romp on it all the way home(70-80-90) and 32-33ish and even more when i can use the cruise, I would say that my good mph is alot to do also with the cruise.

PunkInDrublic
09-21-2006, 03:11 AM
No it won't.

Octane is a measure of a gasoline's tendency to autoignite.

The manual says 87, and there is no reason to put anything higher.

Higher octane gas is just a waste of money, and the gains you speak of, are just a placebo effect of spending more money for gas.

iwantajdmgrl
09-21-2006, 05:22 AM
right...so explain the 360 to the tank compared to 240 with 87...

PunkInDrublic
09-21-2006, 05:29 AM
Different driving habits
Highway vs. city
Cruise control vs. manual input
Humidity differences
rainy vs dry
hot temps vs cooler temps
road conditions (bumpy or smooth)
difference in car weight due to payload
tire pressure
different fuel additives (different fuel brands, not fuel octane)

should I continue?

And yes I know most of those factors I listed above wouldnt make a 120 mile difference, but scientifically speaking, higher octane gasoline will make no difference in mileage with a naturally aspirated tC engine that's engineered to run perfect on 87 octane fuel.

Well, I've had my car for exactly a year now. Put CAI on it at about 3k and have had the TRD exhaust since day 1. Anyhow, I just wanted to say that I have always managed to average at least 300 mi. per tank. Different gas, mods, etc. have had little if any effect. I ususally drive about 50/50 city/hwy, and I do see numbers about 320 when it's mostly hightway driving. Also, I do some very "spirited" driving from time to time. Finally, I always fill my tank until the pump stops, and usually run it about 20 miles past the point where the light comes on.

I would say that if you're not getting more than 265 miles to a tanks, something must be wrong. I would try resetting the ECU, and if that doesn't help, talk to the dealer. Also, I'm not sure that I would use a "half tank or 3/4 tank" measurement whatsoever. I can often put 60-70 miles on a tank before the needle even moves much. The last half of the tank definitely drops a lot quicker as well. I think it is ill-proportioned just to give the driver a little "scare" before they run out of gas.

RS2 5-spd here. TRD exhaust only mod. I drive about 95% highway 5% city. I fill my tank at about the 3/4 mark or below, but always before the light comes on. I bought the car new in June. i put in about 10-12 gal when i fill up. highway is avg 85-90mph. first 4k miles i avg about 23-25mpg now i avg 25-28mpg (@8550miles). i have a LEAD foot and drive hard.

tCizzler, assuming you fill up at most 13ish gallons on those 580 mpg tanks that puts you at 44mpg.....16mpg over the rated top mpg. but i would hope you dont let your gas get that low before you fill up anyway which would greatly increase that number. hard to swallow that number....its down right not edible. that is something i could not take anyone's word on, not even my closest friend with out seeing it.

your not running your tank completely empty which is not a bad thing.

I learned at the new owner's meeting at our dealership that it's bad to run your tank completely empty because then your sensors are exposed and can heat up; keeping your sensors constantly "wet" with gas is the way to go.

Am I right?

I believe the reason running on a near empty tank is said to be bad is because the junk that settles to the bottom of your gas tank can get sucked into the fuel pump when you get down near the bottom

Not sure how true it is, but really there's not a reason to be running your car with no intention of finding a gas station soon when you get near empty and/or the gas light comes on

Actually running the tank to empty hurts the fuel pump itself, the fuel that is in the tank help cools the fuel pump. Running the tank empty leaves the pump with out a heat exchanger and risk premature wear and tear on it.

first off.. something is defiantely wrong with your car. good luck proving it to the dealer tho, they will do a ___ "fuel consumption test" and your car will most likely pass, and they will tell you to lay off the accelerator.

and to the guy who says he got 580 on a tank twice.. IT IS A LIE. you said you average 32-33mpg.. with a 14.5 gallon tank, the MOST you can get is: 480.

and thats still more than anyone has ever reported.

i have an auto with I/H/E and 18's and i average about 25-28mpg and get about 350 per tank.

so something is wrong with yours.

Thank you for telling me how my car works  , it means a lot to me.

Ok so now "average" means sometimes more, sometime less, right?? Seems common sense to me. So how is the "MOST" i can get 480, when i just said that was my AVERAGE.(100% highway, not my average on city streets). You said, "and thats still more than anyone has ever reported", well guess what? NO ITS NOT, i just reported more!

I have no reason to lie and don't care what you think, this site is supposed to help and thats all i was doing, oh well, im done defending myself. 580?!!?!

That is 40 MPG if you run it till it dies.
If you run it till 14 gallons used so that it doesnt die. That is OVER 41 MPG.

i just got 360 miles out of 12.8 gallons, which is just over 28mpg's. i also let my car sit and warm up for like 2-3 minutes before i even put it in gear most of the time, which takes gas and doesn't put it into miles. i did a little bit of highway at good speeds on this tank too.

i could easily get 30 mpg's in my car if i was easier on the gas but what fun is that. if your only getting 230 miles out of a tank and your running it close to when the fuel light turns on then you have a serious problem.

09-24-2006, 09:00 PM
wow more 580 miles to the tank thats complete BS. I know for sure I pulled 33mpg before though which will be 475miles from full to complete empty.

IN other news:
Even with running the tank to empty and worrying about picking up crap that settles at the bottom, the fuel pickup is at the bottom of the tank with a mesh screen. But with a tank with more gas in it, all the sediment is being slosh around its less likely, but if it was to pick something up it will.

Switch your fuel and I bet after 2 tanks of a different gas, you'll gain a bit more mileage. Try either Chevron or BP. 290 is still pretty low for the 5 speed.

The most I have ever gotten was on the way back from our family vaction in NM which was 790 miles from our house and I only filled up once the whole trip and I got around 300 miles out of the first half of the 1st tank believe it or not. But it is also mostly downhill and it was an optimum temp of 75 the whole way. I went 540 miles before filling up and my gas light had just come on. Again, it was all downhill and great temps and it was ALL highway. I normally get about 400 miles to a tank and I drive pretty harsh.

The best that I have done is 360... OC to Parker AZ and around town, but that is the gas light being on.

Normal I am 60% city 40% highway I get about 260; when I was driving 80 miles per day (round trip) I would get 310 or so, but that was also with the light on.

Are you a little heavy on the peddal? Keeping it over 3000 rpm will kill your mpg.

Well I have filled up 3 times. The last 2 I kept track of my mileage.

Today I pumped 10.86 gal when I had driven 239.7 miles since my last fill up. Thats 22.07 mpg

Last week I pumped up at 10.61 gal when I had driven 261.8, calculating to be about 24.67 mpg.

Differences between today and last Friday, higher temps causing me to turn on my A/C more. Also I've been in much more stop and go traffic then last week (bleh!).

Last two fills were the same as my first for my commute to work in stop and go with a longer lengths but definately no hwy.

300 on one and 312 on the other both took 12 gallons. So I am getting about 25-26 mpg.

I see no reason others cannot get that or slightly under it with decent driving and mods that are done properly and that do not hurt mileage.

Also saw no gains using 93 octane over the 87.

Who knows what I will get on a strickly highway fillup.

Cruise control with no AC on does make a big difference. When you get up to speed and leave the cruise on, your engine is literally sipping at your gas tank like tea from a teacup.

The ac button sucks power from cars that people just don't believe, in 4 cylinders it really does make a considerable difference for mpg. Try it sometime, drive an entire tank with the AC on, then an entire tank with the AC off.

Also, octane has nothing to do with mpg as PunkInDrublic says. Hey, don't believe me, but go do research on it and then come back and state your opinion either way. :)

So far I've only filled up my tank twice and my mpg is averging 25 (I drive pretty hard and about 85% has been city). Also, becareful how you measure your tanks guys. Remember, 14.5 gallon tank... fill your tank to full, set your trip odometer, then drive until you refill. Count how many gallons you put into the car on the second tank and subtract the difference from 14.5, then divide that number into the number of miles on your trip odometer.

No offense but on a few people it sounds like their math was just a little off, or they weren't doing the formula correctly. If you really are getting only 230 per tank, you have something very wrong with your car, go get it checked out.

web
10-12-2006, 06:32 PM
^^Agreed.

Octane is something touchy, but for the most part, there is no increase in performance from higher octanes. The only contradiction to this is with Forced induction. Higher octane is essential for a more consistant burn due to the higher amounts of O2 in the cylinders.

DouBLeJ16

Damn, guess you just got one of the tCs that run near the bottom average. That bites.

It does seem to get crappy gas mileage compared to other tC's.. But it also seems to beat other tC's with very similar mods. There are several people on this forum with almost the exact same mods trapping 1-2 MPH less then mine.

I haven't been beat by another tC around here yet and some have had more mods then me. Maybe it's a factory freak.

I'll trade some MPG for some MPH anytime. :)

i REALLY dont think AC makes a huge difference. especially if its a debate of whether to ride (on hwy) with the AC on, windows closed vs. AC off, windows down.

... fill your tank to full, set your trip odometer, then drive until you refill. Count how many gallons you put into the car on the second tank and subtract the difference from 14.5, then divide that number into the number of miles on your trip odometer.

why is there subtraction involved? i simply take (miles on trip meter)/(gallons i just put in), am i doing something wrong? and never ever never ever never ever top off.

We all have different driving habits and different driving conditions such as temperatures mountain vs flat land etc that we drive in so this is not a real accurate comparison as to gas mileage. Also many people don’t know this but different states have different requirements as to what is in their gas. I am so glad I don’t live in California any more. The MTBE in their gas caused a decrease in performance and mileage for me glad they don’t use it anymore. There are also different gas formulas for winter and summer driving. Different gas companies use different additives to clean out the engine among other things. Below are a few of my observations and my .02 cents on this issue.

1. My 07 tC went 327 miles before the gas light turned on. With its first tank of gas in it from the dealer. About 50% highway 50% in city driving. I also treated it nice to break it in so no quick starts and I didn’t go over 60mph on the freeway.

2. I also saw that myth busters episode which showed that AC does not cause the consumption of more gas when it is turned on.

3. The type of oil you use will make a difference as to the amount of gas mileage you get the 5w30 mobile 1 is awesome stuff. I have experimented with this and tried it out vs how regular oil works in your car. Try it for yourself.

4. Idling your car will use up gas. I have remote start on all my cars and I noticed that after I installed it and use the feature by starting and idling the car for 5-10 minutes of warming up my car everyday it did cause me to get poor gas mileage. As an experiment I went a week without remote starting my car and gas mileage improved. In the cold Washington winters I rater use it than get better gas mileage.

5. Where you get your gas makes a difference. I have been to an old Chevron station and I only got 200 miles out of a tank in my xB. Try to find a gas station that has recently had its tanks changed, or has newly been constructed. Go to a quality gas station Chevron, 76, or Shell are my favorites. Also as a test a few years back in a previous car I owned I went to an independent gas stations and an Arco (only once to prove a point) and compared the gas mileage I got to using Chevron 76 and shell. Took a few weeks but my sister and I had an argument where she believed gas is gas and it didn’t matter where you get it from she wanted to use the cheap stuff….. she was so wrong! I got about 1/3 less miles when I used the Arco. And the independent station was less as well. Chevron 76 and shell were all about the same.

Has your tC always had such poor gas mileage or is this something you noticed recently?

There are so many threads about people complaining about the tC's mileage. I drive it normally for the most part and during summer months, I get over 200 miles at the half tank mark.

On the highway, I typically drive at 70mph (65-75) and I get very close to EPA mileage. Even in pseudo-city driving, I get over 22 mpg. Surely there are other people out there who're getting good gas mileage.
