That's why a shield is offered for peace of mind, as well as a snorkel to bring the intake higher on the ZPI setup... unless you're driving through a monsoon, the water is going to evaporate in milleseconds anyways if it splashes on...

Holy crap, do you guys do searches for the word ZPI?

I type it in an obscure thread and boom 2 hours later you both pop up.

Or does Tim just follow the ZPI doubters around the website?

ZPI was not on the Show "Rides", dunno how they got brought up... plus lets not forget its a tC forum not xB...

Remote mounting.. It can be done for the tC but its gonna be fun trying to route those pipes.. its been talked about before. Search STS Turbo

Water can get into and around everything dude. Plus ceramic and metals in general can crack when exposed to one extreme of a temperature variance to another.

Well apparently most cars do not kick up enough water to really make anything go wrong on the turbo's they use on the STS systems. Also I have seen a turbo in a DSM get covered with radiator fluid and it never cracked. I think you doubt the sturdiness of the turbo housings out there a little too much.

Not to mention....How many degrees does a turbo heat up too? Also, if water were to some how get sucked into the intake filter, the turbine spins exactly how many RPM's? Any potential water would be vaporized, just from the sheer velocity of the turbine.

There's also kits for some mustangs and some deisel trucks that the turbo is in the rear of the car/truck and the pipes lead all the way from the motor and back around. I've seen this in one race setup but have heard that it is really inefficient b/c of the long delay of boost.

sts turbos, as well as any rear mounted turbo I've seen, do not work very well.

i was told that there is very little to no turbo lag. well at least on the system that i saw (Pontiac GTO)... but i don't know, the instructors wouldn't let me drive it.

they leak, have oiling problems, cracked housings, noisy, inconsistent boost, the list goes on and on. if you put one of these on, expect to be in the shop every month or 2 getting it fixed. most people that are happy with these systems have never had a real turbo, and thehy more than likely don't daily drive the vehicle. I'm sure there will be the exception here or there but generally speaking these things are garbage. the one nice thing is they don't make enuf power to crack your block open :-)

They work if done properly. Seen if for myself. Billy (ProshopxB) has I believe the first ZPI xB turbo kit on his xB. He has driven it from KY all the way back home to FL, and in the process, killed a couple of cars on the ride back. You should talk to him and ask him how is stuff is running. Trust me, it works. You want a sleeper, the only thing your going to see when popping the hood is what looks to be a cold air intake....LOL

I've seen many, on imports, mustangs, corvettes, z28's, and srt-10's as well. ask him how he likes it in 6 months. I'm all for something that works. I build race engines and turbo cars all the time. I just prefer ones that make power. not 150 hp, but 400+ hp.

/\/\ ZPI's kit for the xB is mid-mounted. These sts turbo's are rear mounted. Exhaust CFM spools the turbo vs CFM and heat on traditionally mounted setups. Heat, or, thermal energy, is just that, energry and often time forgotten. Also all metals have a high heat variance risk of cracking when exposed from one extreme to another. Dosen't always happen, but its a physical characteristic of not only metals but any material with the exception of protruleum products. What happens to ice when you take it outta the freezer and drop it into a cup of soda??

So, if the turbine was sheilded, what then?

well, you still have all the other issues like oil smoke (common problem) also do you really want an oil line running down the car? if that leaks then bye bye engine. also, intake piping leaks a lot, boost levels are inconsistent because the turbo isn't getting spooled up like it should. if the turbo is located at the potpr, the exhaust is very hot and very high velocity so the turbo whips into action fast. once you're 3 or 4 feet back the exhaust is too cool to build pressure and you end up having to install a tiny compressor housing to spool. well at that point, you are cramming all your exhaust through a hole the size of a DIME. which really causes the engine to run like ____ when you're just driving regulalry.
