i'm very close to purchasing a stage 1 head from zpi. My questions are:

1. can the "average joe" install this new head?
2. if not, what kinds of places install it and what range is the price of labor going to be?

thanks

I would not recommend installing the head unless prior experience. If im not mistaken, the only thing that makes this job so difficult is because of the timming chain. Install , i have no idea what it would cost. why dont you get into contact with ZPI and ask them them questions, or they will probably answer them here shortly. If you search though, im sure this topic has been discussed a few times, and you might find your answer.

The head package is Very nice though, i would get it.

not hard at all BESIDES the timing chain... when i yanked my engine apart it was very easy... then again the motor was out of the car which makes life 100x easier... i think with someone there who is a little bit more than your backyard mechanic you could do it...

Pointless mod unless you have aftermarket fuel management.

ehhh.... i read somewhere that someone netted about 12whp running pig rich on the stock ecu... but you're right management would make a significant difference

Well im sure when you have other modifications like ZPI turbo, exhaust, and more fuel management then i wouldnt doubt 40ish

I would hope you would get A LOT more than 40ish hp out of a setup like that, especially with the turbo.

Zpi site says 21whp with stock airbox and stock exhaust.

I really dont know for sure. That was just a guess. Kind in mind if ZPI mean 21whp on stock airbox and stock exhaust then that claim wasnt with a turbo. I'm sure the gains would be alot more on turbo car. Thats what I meant when I said "40ish" Sorry I forgot this was posted in Drivetrain and power.

I think that you are close with the 40ish with i/h/e combined, not sure you could get that much from the head alone. Not sure if that is what you meant or not.

I heard you have to send them your stock head before you get the new one

I heard you have to send them your stock head before you get the new one

or pay an extra $700 core charge, which is refunded when you send them your head.

ON those guys that have blown engines, did you guys ever think about going with the ZPI engine for our rides? Once my car is paid off this is one thing i will be looking at first and then build for there with a Turbo and forged everything while the engine is out.. I have been really thinking of getting ZPI to build the whole thing and i will drive up for the install... Anybody actually have one of their engines in htoer car? i would love to hear more about that... thanks.

No one has done a head swap by themselves? How about a how-to?
