View Full Version : fuel gauge question????
GooseNaBoxxx 10-04-2006, 10:24 PM Ok, at 328miles on my xb, my fuel light came on, I was at a 1/4 of a tank. I pulled over and filled up. It only took 9.7gal...I know this is a 11.9gal tank...correct? Is it supposed to go off so early???? I thought I was about to run out of gas in the middle of my hour long drive to work! How long should I have after the fuel light comes on???
kkawana 10-04-2006, 10:32 PM think the light comes on w/2 gallons left in the tank.... think thats the general rule with all cars...
equinox2355 10-04-2006, 10:32 PM the fuel light is a reserve light, which means its just running on its reserve..... from this you can tell there is almost 3 gallons, id say to be safe, that you could go about 45-50 miles after the light comes on.
GooseNaBoxxx 10-04-2006, 10:36 PM sweet thanx for the input, I could have made it there and back with the much left in my tank :P
thanx again...you guys rock!!
IH8ONYU 10-04-2006, 11:20 PM the tank is a 9.9 gal tank
wagonbldr 10-05-2006, 12:05 AM The tank is 11.9 gal. My light doesn't come on till it is at 1/8th. Usually takes 10 gals. Seems there is some variation from vehicle to vehicle as to when the light comes on. I usually don't wait till the light comes on. Lowest I let it get is 1/4th tank.
budha53 10-05-2006, 12:45 AM when my light comes on, it usualy takes about 9.5 gallons. so you should have about 2.4 gallons left because it is an 11.9 gallon tank.
xBster 10-05-2006, 12:50 AM Ditto, wagonbldr, I don't like to run mine below 1/4 tank either...never thought it a good idea to run the tank to low.
jwaj2002 10-05-2006, 02:34 AM the one time I accidently let it get that low, my light came on right before it ran out of gas, within a mile of running out, luckily I was less then 50 feet from the gas station I was headed to
kuro-xb 10-05-2006, 02:37 AM ^^ beware of the fuel light... :nails:
jwaj2002 10-05-2006, 02:42 AM I don't let my tank get below 1/2 tank anymore
SouthCountyMiles 10-05-2006, 07:46 AM i heard its bad to go below 1/4 tank? cause it struggles more on the engine for gas or something?
if your fuel sloshes around a corner when you have a small amount of gas - there is a possibility of your fuel pump picking up air instead of gas. Since fuel actually lubricates the pump as it works - you're essentially killing your fuel pump. I'm not sure how it affects your engine - unless your injectors spray air instead of gas.
KraXxuS 10-05-2006, 01:40 PM Fill up at every 1/2 tank....better gas mileage the more gas you have in your fuel system. I get like 25-30 more miles per tank when I compared driving 'till a couple days after the fuel light came on to filling up at half tank and adding the two together.
drive a tc
kdog_1981 10-05-2006, 01:51 PM ^ yea i would hate going the gas station that often though....
LoadedAgain 10-05-2006, 02:17 PM Fill up at every 1/2 tank....better gas mileage the more gas you have in your fuel system.
Huh?!? Explain. Never heard that before. More gas means more weight. More weight means less MPG.
On many Fords and Chevys it is good to keep the fuel level above 1/4 in the hot summer. The fuel pump is kept cool by sitting in the gas. On a really hot summer day with city driving the pumps can get hot and fail. Maybe the same on the xB; I don't know where the pump is located.
jwaj2002 10-05-2006, 10:59 PM I go twice a week to the gas station, costs less then $20 to fill up because I only put in a half a tank
Guamsilverbox671 10-05-2006, 11:09 PM I wouldn'drive too long with the light on
Running too low on fuel may heat up your fuel pump. When the fuel light is on what does it means??????? It means go to your nearest gastation and fuel up. Common sense. :lalala:
zinker 10-06-2006, 07:33 AM it may damage ur pump if its internall isit? IDK because it is cooled and lubed by the fuel itself. Idk I fill it up after it comes on
