Default WTF!? Advise to dump oil cans on road!??

Went to recycle my oil and they said they wouldn't take my oil filters or the plastic oil quarts I had. I asked them then what should I do with these as I do not want to just improperly dispose of them. Especially seeing as California already has a serious pollution problem I would rather not blatantly contribute to trashing my home state. The employees then chuckled and said "I don't know man, put down your tailgate and drive really fast with the stuff in the back?" It was at AutoZone so I guess I can not be surprised at that brilliant remark. Any advice on proper disposal? Thanks!

I think Walmart disposes of oil . Probably at a small fee. Check with them.

They were messing with you. But yeah, I wouldnt by rags from Autozone, much less listen to anything they say

They were joking, because for years and years, oil was sprayed on dirt roads to keep down dust. Of course, not so good for the environment.. but neither is the thousands of miles of asphalt leeching into the soil either!

Some places will not take the containers, but will let you dump them out and dispose of the plastic bottles yourself.

Take it to an oil change shop like Ez-Lube or JiffyLube. I think they are required by California law to accept used oil. If that AutoZone changes oil, they should have taken it.

They tok the oil, in fact gave me 80 cents for recycling it or whatever. My issue is about disposing f the containers, not taking the used oil.

Just throw out the containers - they're not usually recyclable
