View Full Version : Clunking Noise? HELP!!!
stl_tc_king 10-20-2006, 09:43 PM When I go over bumps the back end of my car makes loud clunking noises. It is not the hatch, it is coming from under the car.
I lifted it up yesterday and checked all the bolts (all tight), I checked to make sure the wheels were on snug (all good), and I checked to see if anything was hitting anything else, but no luck!!
The noise seems to be loudest when im driving at speeds between 20-30mph over bumpy roads. I have an idea what it may be, but I want to hear other opinions.
As far as aftermarket suspension parts go, I have Hotchkis springs and Hotchkis front/ rear anti-sways.
HELP!!! :nails:
paul34 10-20-2006, 10:38 PM If I am thinking of the noise you are thinking of, this happens if I go over bumps too quickly. Just slow down and you'll be ok.
BLUEMEANIE 10-21-2006, 12:41 AM its prolly your end link ... I've had it happen before on my camry. They're grease packed bushings that pivot, if one tears the grease will dry up and it will clunk around.
PM me if you want to come by and I can take a look at it or I can do it at the Lou Fusz show on sunday if I make it by.
...I can swap it out for you when you get a replacement, I have all the proper tools at my house.
BOXMAN 10-23-2006, 05:53 PM Mine did the same thing. Make sure your rear sway isnt shiffted to one side more than the other side. If it is the endlink will rub.
B1uEsC1uEs 10-23-2006, 08:03 PM happened to me too, I just tightend the endlink and it was all gone.
tan_Cao 10-23-2006, 09:19 PM check to make sure that your rear shocks are on tight as well. I drove over a bump and the nuts came right off, I'm not sure how the hell they managed to do that, but I ripped apart the back and shocks weren't bolted down.
stl_tc_king 10-24-2006, 01:46 PM thanks for the suggestions guys. If it is the end links, would it be covered under warranty?
bluemeanie- i appreciate the offer and i'll be certain to let you know if i need any help.
BOXMAN 10-24-2006, 02:30 PM ^^^ No it wont be covered by warranty in most cases. They will say the sway bar is 300%+ stiffer than the stock oem one and now the sway bars have became the issue not the crappy weak stock end links.
tcsti 10-24-2006, 05:00 PM wow, i have the same noise, only up front. that makes me want to check out the whole car now.
Beantowntc 10-24-2006, 05:18 PM I have the same noise....I think its my trd sway but not sure. Anyone know how much the endlinks go for??
BOXMAN 10-24-2006, 05:24 PM ^^^^I think in the 25-40 buck range per side. ^^^^
stl_tc_king 10-26-2006, 04:22 AM Thanks for all your help everyone.
The problem was solved by tightening all of the nuts that are associated with the rear sway. Specifically in my case, the driver's side end link was pretty loose. Once everything was tightened back up, the car is MUCH more quiet.
You know, it really is great when you can simply post a problem that you have and you are answered with possible solutions.
I sincerely thank all of you who posted in my thread.
Spect2K3 10-26-2006, 04:32 AM Glad you got yours fixed. I've tried everything to the extent that i'm going to the dealer on saturday for them to take a look while i'm still under warranty. :nails: I hate having them touch my car!
d_gage 10-27-2006, 10:03 PM i have a loud noise also coming from my car and i'm running tein coilovers. hopefully this is only and endlink noise. thanks for the information guys!
Spect2K3 10-29-2006, 01:21 AM Just wondering, what exactly are the endlinks? Does anyone maybe have a picture (or ideally a DIY) of what to tighten? Any info would be appreciated b/c this is driving me crazy. The dealer told me I blew the rear struts (even though i'm only on TRDs), but there is something up front too...
EDIT: I suppose that if I were to find my way to tightening the endlinks, I would need to know the torque settings if anyone happens to have em
Spect2K3 10-29-2006, 02:42 AM any info for a beginner on the placements of those endlinks?
Spect2K3 10-29-2006, 02:44 PM bump, this is driving me crazy guys!
d_gage 10-29-2006, 03:31 PM well i just got in from the garage going over the rear suspension, everything was tight :( so now i have no idea where this clunk is coming from
stl_tc_king 10-30-2006, 01:58 PM Try tightening the bolts that attach to the ends of the sway bar. This is where my biggest problem was.
Spect2K3 10-30-2006, 02:15 PM any idea of torque specs by chance?
i'm also not really sure how to access the ends, do you have to take the wheels off?
stl_tc_king 10-30-2006, 04:59 PM no i dont know the torque specs, just tighten them good by hand.
Just jack up the car in the rear, put it on some jack stands and you should be able to access them with no problem.
Spect2K3 10-30-2006, 06:31 PM how about the front, any word about that? To me, it sounds like that's where its coming from, but I think its harder to access the front sway? Any info?
stl_tc_king 10-30-2006, 08:07 PM yeah its a little harder to get to, but still you should be able to tighten without taking off the wheels.
krdshrk 10-30-2006, 08:10 PM It's most likely the nut on the top of the strut tower. Sway bar arms shouldn't become unbolted, but yeah - i'd take off the front wheels and look down there. You should be able to see the sway bar without too much of a problem.
Spect2K3 10-30-2006, 08:21 PM Well I just spent the past 2 hours out there analyzing the car from top to bottom and front the back. I jacked up everything and checked, rechecked, and checked again all of the bolts underneath having to do with the suspension, and all of the bolts having to do with the strut and strut bar under the hood. I then took it for a test drive, and the problem is still there, but I think I may have located it a little bit better.
The problem happens when i'm doing lets say 3K in 2nd gear for example and then I smack the gas hard and suddenly. When I do that, it happens EVERY time and it definitely is coming from the front driver side. It almost sounds like it is coming from underneath the gas pedal...any ideas?
I started a new thread for my issue b/c I completely threadjacked this one (sorry to whoever created it):

stl_tc_king 10-30-2006, 09:45 PM lol, i created it but i already solved the problem so jack on!
