View Full Version : Severe noise from rear windows
DrMoron 07-27-2004, 02:11 AM Got my XA 5 weeks ago... I love it, even though I am far out of the target demographics... Age 50 here... but a small light quick spirited car lover for years.
Found something interesting one day with the rear windows. With both rear windows open about 1/3 to half way AND both front windows closed AND doing over 40 MPH you get a really loud noise/vibration that can give you a headache real fast. Must be the way the air hits but cant pass through. I am pretty sure this is not just my car, but havent seen any posts about it. Mebbe I'm the only one who rides with rear windows open and fronts closed?
Also would love to find out if anyone has figured out how to get that amber storage area light to stay lit on demand.
mikochu 07-27-2004, 02:40 AM Yeah, that happens in all cars. It has to do with aerodynamics. It used to happen in my mom's 4Runner...happens in her durango now. You have to either roll the back windows all the way down...or roll the front ones up a little. I think it has to do with the wind not being able to escape properly, so it chops...???? ...I don't know, I'm an arts major :D
I second Miko's reply. It happens on my Trooper, BMW, Sis's Accord, and bro's Audi. Nothing to worry about. I always drive with windows up on my xA, Houston summers are Hot!!
mill0048 07-27-2004, 03:43 AM That's normal... I found that out this weekend. My first time owning a four door car. I beleive that's what they call wind buffeting. Something to do with how the air can't enter and escape the same opening at the same time. Yet it doesn't happen with the front windows as easily for some reason... :?
robert_gately 07-27-2004, 04:38 AM I didn't have the severe wind noise on my Honda Odessey. I could drive it over 40 mph with all 4 windows down and it was always fine. I sure noticed the difference on the xA. It can really be painful so I roll them up instead.
I wonder if air deflectors around the windows would solve the problem?
kdanie 07-27-2004, 11:07 PM Yes, it's a poor aerodynamic design. I doubt the designers ever drove the xA prototype with the rear windows down. Wind deflectors may help but I have not seen any available yet. Someone should call the 'ventshade' people and see if they could do something for us.

Theglen10 07-28-2004, 11:24 AM All you have to do is crack the front windows about 1" - 1-1/2" and the sound will go away. Like everyone said it happens in all cars.

I'm not sure...but a Honda Odyssey doesn't have 4 windows that roll down. I believe the front ones roll down, and the rear ones vent open from the back side. I don't think the sliding door windows open...

Perhaps they are referring to the prior gen (90ish-95ish) which had four swing doors? I tried the 1"-2" thing today (Any reason to fire up the xB will do  ) and it works.
TheScionicMan 07-28-2004, 10:07 PM If you open all 4 windows in the xA it shouldn't happen either. It's just when the backs are only open. Same with the xB. Also, at least on the xB, if you only have the fronts down, the wind seems to hit me in the side of my head harder. I've gotten into the habit of rolling the front all the way down and cracking the back halfway.
To back up Mikochu's scientific description, , think of a Coke bottle under a faucet. The water flows in fine until it gets up to the top. Now the water is trying to go in and trying to flow out at the same time. That's basically whats happening to the car. Air is rushing in the window but can't rush out as easily so it starts the buffeting. It's definitely not just a problem with the xA. Some cars will even get this when the sunroof is open... This is also partly due to the new style windows. The old skool wing window in the front doors usually negated this problem...
The ideal solution would be for the rear windows to vent. I've always thought that would be a killer mod, but it's way out of my comfort level...

That's for the experiment, Mr. Wizard
