Default Radiator Fan turns off when ignition is turned off

When I turn the ignition off and the radiator fan happens to be running, the fan also turns off. I expected the fan to keep running for a while after turning off the engine so that it could continue to cool the engine.

I wonder if this was a good design decision and if it might shorten the life of the engine?

Maybe it would be easy to re-wire the fan so that it bypasses the ignition?

I dought you could. My friend tried doing this in his 2000 Accord- It did not work! All new cars that ive driven do the same. Old school Hondas would run to cool down the car- but apperently that's a thing of the past... I would just let you car idle a minute or two when you done driving- its the same diffence.....

if it worries yu that much, get a turbo timer. otherwise, why waste yer brain-juice thinking about sumthing that yu wouldn't change anyway. there are bigger things to be dealt with.

Its sort of a pointless thing to have the fan run with the car off. Unless the engine is running than the water pump is not spinning to pump coolant. If coolant isn't being circulated than cooling off what is just in the radiator isn't going to cool down the hot coolant in the engine at all. Letting it sit and cool is better.

the old VW rabbits had the fan ruing with the key off. people would walk up to the owners and ask if they forgot to turn their engines off.

as mentioned above, it won't help cool the engine, since the coolant pump is not pumping coolant through the system. the fan will cool the coolant in teh radiator, but what's the point? it's not going to keep getting hotter once the engine and fan are switched off.

nevertheless, if you wanted to rewire it to run with the key off, that would not be a difficult mod.

Thanks for the feedback and pointing out that there would be no real benifit in having the fan run if the coolant wasn't also being pumped through the engine.
