6 Speed Swap
Now, first off, Im a long long way from this, but Id like to start my research now rather than later.
Second of all, yes I searched and essentially came up with Auto tC owners who want 5m's in thier tCs.
Ok now to the nitty gritty. Our cars are quick mostly due to the high final drive ratio, and the 5 speeds. But the problem with said final drive is that it kills our highway gas mileage if you do anything more than the posted 65mph limit. I actually get better mileage in town than I do on the highway.
Now my thinking is this, assuming there is a fwd based 6 speed trans that fits, with proper gearing we can a) keep the same quickness if not pick up a little bit b) effectively increase the top speed (assuming laws of physics dont exist) c) lower the gas mileage with a REAL overdrive gear, as our 5th is almost just like a second 4th gear (similar to the 6th gear in the cobra mustang, its more like a 5 1/2)
So the questions come in then:
Are there any transmissions that anyone knows of that fit our car, atleast mate to the engine. Driveshafts are cheaper to get made than adapter plates and bell housings so, is there simply anything that bolts up to the engine?
Is there any information on our stock trans (detailed info) listed anywhere on this site. I know there is some info with each gear ratio and the fdr.
Has anyone done this already and im simply overlooking something in my search?

I don't know of anyone that has done this, or anyone that has even put in just a taller 5th gear. With the amount of money you're gonna throw into a project like this, and the headaches, and time, you might as well pocket the cash and put it towards gas.
Not sure why this didnt post in DT&P like I thought I posted...
Secondly, the headaches will be relatively minimal considering the car is already built for a manual trans, no extra plumbing to run, not holes to cut. The money factor I could see, but ... I dont see it being that much.
I would do the install myself though, except for anything major that needed to be fabricated so I would be saving alot of money right there.

What about the six speed in the new si? I know basically nothing about transmissions so I have no idea how compatable it is but our engines are relatively (size wise) the same so maybe?
And yes I think pictures are allowed as long as they are kept within size constraints. That one might be pushing the size limit though.

what a way to hijack a thread! lol.
anyway, i would love to see a 6 speed tranny in a tc. im not really mechanically inclined, however, i believe you may be able to use the 2zzge tranny in the gts celica or the 4age blacktop tranny in the levin. i believe the names for them are c60 and c160 trannies. both 6 speed. again, not mechanically inclined here but those are probably the only 6 spd toyota trannies i know of that might work. lol. good luck.

i don't think the GT-S (or even the SI) tranny will work because the gearing was not meant for a lower redline, higher torque car.
please correct me if i'm wrong because i would love to have a 6 speed!
my younger brother recently got an 07 SI and...yea...

In a few words definately not... that would be much much much more work than getting a Totoya made trans to work. If I was going to do that Id get a Mazda 6spd anyways (god those things are smooth)
As people have brought up, I can't think of any 6 speed car that uses roughly the same size engine... and is FWD. All the lexus' are either RWD or not manual trans equipped so that doesnt help. Damn Toyota way to drop the ball on this one.
Looks like swapping in the taller 5th gear would be the short term answer, but at the cost of that the trans still has to be pulled and opened up... so Id still look for a 6 speed.
Its mostly a bellhousing problem I would assume? Demensions wise the Celica GTS is roughly the same size as our car, so with a new custom bell housing (assuming its removeable... if not... then hooray for machine work) should fit. I think I need to go look up the gear ratios in the trans.
