built and finally finished a custom sub box
i was pretty happy with the stock stereo system in my tc other than needing some low end punch. so i bought a little setup from a friend that i actually set up for him a few years ago. it's an 10" Alpine Type-R(dual 4-ohm coils) with a Rockford Fosgate 301M monoblock amp(300watts rms at 2ohms). the box i used was a cheap Q-logic ported box which was only 1.5 cubic feet with a 4" diameter port which makes it tuned way to high for my liking.
so i, with the help of my dad built a 2 cubic ft enclosure which with a 3" diameter by about 10" long port tunes to roughly 28-30 hzs. once i fired it up i was instantly surpised how much deeper and louder it was just because of the box size and tuning. i have the subwoofer itself aiming towards the back of the car and the port is in the top of the box. the air coming out of the port is shooting rigt at the hatch window.
tonight i just got done covering the box after riding around with it in my trunk uncovered (just bare MDF) for weeks. i will post pics of it tomorrow now that it looks good finally for you all to see. my trunk space is about 2/3's gone but i never use it anyway, and even if i do i can easily take the box out.
my last system was (in a cavalier) 2 12's in a sealed box with about 450 watts rms to each woofer. this is very comparable to that with a lot less power and a lot less weight. so the point of the story is ported boxes when built and tuned right can be louder and sound just as good as a bigger setup with a sealed box.
pics of the setup to be added tomorrow once it's light outside. sorry for all the

sweet.... generally, the loudest configuration in a hatchback is what they call the "CRX Style" ported box which is with the subs up and ports firing rearward... but none the less, kudos to you!
