View Full Version : FAQ: Debadge/Emblem Removal
nacy333 09-19-2003, 12:19 AM Okay this is the first of 2 that I'm doing. I'm doing this one first cos it's easier. :D
Darren: If you want, you can edit and modify this in any way that you want if you need to make a formal FAQ or something.
Legal:
I take no responsibility for your stupidity or professionality. If you screw up your car, don't blame me, Scion Life, your Scion dealer, or your uncle (unless your uncle screws it up). To add to that, this is not an instruction manual, this is a journal of sorts, so if you decide to, you are following this 'journal' at your own risk. Doing so may damage your vehicle, void your warranty, result in death, loose your job, have your family disown you, have people make fun of you and various combinations of the examples given.

Randy West (Randode) performed most of it on DJFrost's (Ernesto) Black xB. I, nacy333 (Studly) helped with some gunk removal and some polishing/waxing afterwards and pictures..and Krickel (Kristal, Randy's Wife) sat around, drank a ton of beer and made fun of us (see the legal above).
Here is what you need:
Dental Floss (Randy West Recommends Mint Flavored)
Goo Remover/Bug And Tar Remover (

Optional/Recommended:
Rubbing Compound/Car Polish
Your Favorite Wax (Randy Uses Meguires)

Prep:
Begin by making sure that the surface paint and the emblems themselves are hot. This helps to loosen up the adhesive on the paint and emblem. You can do this by either using a blowdryer or by leaving it in the sun for awhile.
Removal:
First take the floss and using moderate force 'shave' away at the adhesive between the paint and the emblem. You will be going through several lines of dental floss doing this so don't worry. Disclaimer: You can loose your fingers if you wrap the dental floss to tight around your fingers (Randy lost his index finger on this occaision).

After you get off the Badge this is what all the goo looks like afterwards
http://nacy.net/scion/DIY/Debadge/Debadge05.jpg
Goo Removal:
The adhesive is pretty thick so it'll take some tender luvin car to remove the adhesive off the paint without scratching it to all hell. Gently peal away at it with your finger...if it helps, pour some gunk/goo but/tar remover on the adhesive to help get it off. Otherwise, use your fingers to remove the majority of the adhesive.
http://nacy.net/scion/DIY/Debadge/Debadge06.jpg
Once you got the majority of the adhesive off, take a rag with the Goo/Gunk remover and wipe away at it until it is visibly gone.

Post Emblem/Adhesive Removal:
Remember that your paint is pretty much stripped of the wax and you will probably have very fine micro scratches on your clearcoat when all is said and done. Take your polish/rubbing compound and go over the areas you worked on to remove any scratches on the car. Clean off the surface and go over it with a wax to keep your paint protected.
This xB was black and when we were done with it, it is nearly impossible to tell where the emblems were and any fine/hairline scratches on the clearcoat.

randode 09-19-2003, 12:25 AM who exactly is this "Randy" character?
Longoscion 09-21-2003, 08:56 AM Randy? You mean Randy West, the actor?
Djuan 09-21-2003, 10:28 AM I would shy away from rubbing your fingers over the left over adhesive, I did and I ended up with about 5 major blisters, the price you pay when your too impatient to wait just get some rubbing compound...
1sikxb 09-22-2003, 01:28 AM Prior to wrapping the floss around your fingers insert your hands into a hair of thick gloves. They saved me from losing the upper portion of both of my index fingers.
rolex87 09-24-2003, 07:02 PM Just finished debadging my Thundercloud xB. It looks soooooooo clean now! Thanks for the tips!
SGVside 09-25-2003, 05:48 AM Very good explanation. Step by Step and the whole 9. Thats how i would have done it. Good job.
mrlaypo 10-12-2003, 04:49 AM i just did this today and i must have been smiling like a dumbass for 30 minutes after i finished.. it looks clean..
BUT...
now that the emblems are off, the rear wiper stands out a bit more. so for those of you who have taken the wiper off..... HOW? i thought i could get somewhere by taking off the nut underneath that plastic shell covering... but nothing budged.
DibujoB 10-12-2003, 04:53 AM another neat trick....instead of using the dental floss, try it with a zip-tie too! If you slide the flat end of a zip tie into the badge (put the smooth side down so the paint doesn't scracth) it will pup out the other side...simply thread it into the other end and cinch it....then you have a nice little finger loop to use for pulling off the badge, and it doesn't scratch the paint.
word.
Very nice explanation with photos...well done!

eric_m 10-12-2003, 07:07 AM i would also like to add that i've done this modification and it is not very hard. you can just take some dental floss and yank off the badge, and then use your finger to take off the adhesive stuff. it's really easy. i debadged my subaru and it was almost an all day event because of the different type of adhesive used or something. it's almost like scion wanted us to take off our badges....nah.
Torokun 10-12-2003, 08:01 AM i debadged my subaru and it was almost an all day event because of the different type of adhesive used or something.
Yeah, it was really hard removing Subaru sign off of my WRX... Most of the letters were broken in the middle of removing them... Sigh... i wish I had it... It would be the onle thing left of my WRX... I actually have the Blitz Turbo timer, extra gauges and the gauges casing left...
wonderworm 10-27-2003, 06:06 AM Hey,
This method worked for me.
1. Warm up the badge with a blowdryer or let it sit in the sun for a while.
2. Squirt a little Goo Gone between the badge and the xB. (Too begin loosening up the glue)
3. Use a blockbuster id or other thin but strong laminated id and slide the corner under the badge to perforate the glue. Then perforate the glue around the entire badge until you can pop it off. (Warning your ID may be a little bent at the tips so use one you don't care about.)
highend 12-16-2003, 03:24 AM I know this is an old topic, but I just used the info to debadge my xb. THANKS! Looks really nice - i didn't even have to use any goo gone to get the glue off - i just sat my ___ in a chair and took a LONG time carefully peeling away the residue. Then i waxed and washed it and it looks nice. Thanks for the info fellas!
HotBox 01-10-2004, 09:31 PM yes an old tpoic but im bored and dont have anything to do today so im going to do this but my question is does this also work for the scion badge under the rear wiper?
showpaojoe 01-10-2004, 09:34 PM It's not there in the pic so I'm guessin yes
HotBox 01-10-2004, 09:36 PM that last pic of the rear up close didnt come up so i asked but thanx
showpaojoe 01-10-2004, 09:50 PM Just watch out when you do it cuz I rubbed too hard with the goo remover and got scratches on a blue xB. I had to blend in paint and a buff job to get it golden again
CBSIMONSEZ 01-11-2004, 01:17 PM Some things to take into consideration, i have done this to the sides of my NEON, as well as removal of several emblems, and have made some mistakes when i didnt know what i was doing and in a rush....
1) I would recomend using the dental floss, rather then the zip tie, or Block Buster card theory. Keep in mind, your paint is relatively new, and the clear CAN scratch even with your finger nail!
2) Once the emblem is removed, SOAK a towel in the Goo Gone, and then soak the left over residue, wait a minute, and soak the residue again. Repeat this several times, and it may take a couple of minutes, but let the Goo Gone do its job and chemically break down the adheisive for you..... be patient!
3) Once the break down has begun, use your own finger ( not your finger nail ) and rub the section ( you may use another cloth, but make sure it is CLEAN! ) Any lil bit of grit WILL scratch and swirl your paint ( i know, i have a lovely spot of scratches in my door on my NEON because i was in a rush, and the rag fell on the ground ).
4) No rubbing compound should be necessary, just wash the area and re-wax.
To remove the xB emblem alone, i would think would take about 30-45 minutes. If your removing other emblems, do them all at once to speed along the process.
Treat it like a lady, slow and gentle, and you will be surprised at the results.
UrbanDrum 01-11-2004, 01:30 PM Does it have to be mint flavered floss?
http://nacy.net/scion/DIY/Debadge/Debadge01.jpg
JK
HotBox 01-11-2004, 03:22 PM the xB emblem was easy and floss did the trick as for the scion it was a little harder so i opted to use fishing line which did the trick i also recommend a blowdryed which serves as a double purpose for heating up the emblems and keeping warm since its cold outside
TwisTeD_ScioN 01-13-2004, 11:52 PM I just debadged my xA emblem off my car and it looks awesome. I was going to do the scion logo as well but I noticed on the xA where the scion logo is the metal is actually spaced in. Have any xA owners debadged that logo and does it look clean or is there really a spacer there?
hnefrdo 01-14-2004, 12:14 AM i debadged my frend's SE-R a while ago and used WD40 instead of goo gone. it works just as good. just providing an alternative.
CBSIMONSEZ 01-17-2004, 03:33 AM actually, i too have tried the WD-40 trick, and yes it does remove adhiesive, but not nearly as good or as fast as Goo Gone. JMO
westsype 01-17-2004, 03:40 AM I'm going to have to doos that this weekend.
UrbanDrum 01-17-2004, 04:41 AM Anyone want to sell the removed badges?
CBSIMONSEZ 01-17-2004, 09:10 PM Ill sell em to ya Urban..........
for 6K
westsype 01-17-2004, 09:41 PM I just removed my badges. And it is clean and easy like it was never there. Just a tip. When the badges are off use a heat gun( i did) or blow dryer to heat up the remaining glue then rub it off with your finger it comes off it chunks. Then whatever adhesive is left place a paper towel over it cut to size. and then saturate it with goo gone and let sit for however long you want and it will just break down and come off. Just rub it off it is that easy.
Jaywade24 01-17-2004, 11:06 PM Hey guys, the dental foss ideal is neat...the used car dept at my dealership has to take off dealer emblems all the time, they do by heating it up then using something like Goo Gone to remove it...I seen it done and it looks pretty easy..hope that helps

Sciontuner 02-10-2004, 04:07 PM OW jeeeez i have a blister about the size of a dime on the end of my thumb from rubbing so hard, it wa snasty....i just felt the skin slide down into this pile on my hand. it was GROSS! only warning! you will get blisters!!!!!
Piston 02-10-2004, 04:28 PM I just did mine this weekend, and it looks great. I used turtle wax's Bug & Tar remover. I is a foaming spray, so I sprayed it on and about 30 minutes later I came out with some fishing line to remove the badge, and I was able to just pull them both off without using the line at all.
Seeing how the sticky tape was all soft it came off fairly easy. Thanks for the tip on how to remove the badges.

I cant wait to remove the rear wiper now. Anyone got a step by step for that, to make it look sweet.
Jason
DJ_X_Trodinaire 03-08-2004, 08:03 PM did mine this weekend

Love_My_Hotbox 03-13-2004, 10:05 PM Just did mine and didn't even read this first. We used fishing line and snowboarding pipe gloves. The car had been sitting in the shade all day but the gooey stuff peeled right off. No blisters, no scratching required. Took only a couple of minutes. No I'm going to go do a touch up wash in the little area, but there's no sticky stuff there at all. Just a white outline from where it wasn't cleaned well enough with the badge on.

Still debating whether or not to take off the "Scion" too. I just took off the "xB" because with my new tail light decal I didn't need a second "xB" on the back.
GotBoxRevised 03-26-2004, 09:40 PM got mine off in like 10minutes. Very easy.....used butter knife wrapped in a towel. Also took the tape off of the windows, but i got little pieces of tape sticking out of the weatherstripping. I gotta spend another day removing the small pieces of tape
mikochu 04-02-2004, 06:10 AM Debadged my xA badge in 3 minutes. I used the dental floss method. I was able to peel off the remaining adhesive with my nails (in big pieces). I didn't have to use any goo gone, but I wiped it just for good measure. My friend (has a WRX) said it was the fastest debadge he's ever seen...
thank you for the article! Very helpful and detailed!! I am on the job already! :D
fr130 04-10-2004, 11:24 PM BUMP
Nice day today, so I shaved Charlene's emblems. Blisters anyone  . But here's what I did with the emblems. Not alot of adhesive left on the emblems but enough to hold them on my room door. The house belongs to my folks so I didn't place the emblems on the front door. Appropriate since the Box is door shaped too.

xBoX_Driver 05-29-2004, 05:23 PM Great thread on removing badges!!!
I removed the Scion badge from the rear of my xB, but, I am leaving the "xB" on for now.
Total time to remove badge was 20 minutes.
1. I heated the logo w/ my wife's hairdryer for 5 minutes.
2. Grasped the logo with my fingertips at "3 and 9".
3. Pull!
4. Using a terrycloth towel as an applicator, dab "MAGIC BRIGHT™" Grease, Tar & Wax remover onto adhesive residue. (Residue came off with very little wiping.)
Be forewarned. . . this stuff removes ALL traces of wax!!!
5. Used Meguiar's "Scratch X" over area. (Used sparingly and rubbed lightly.) Buff.
6. Used Meguire's Deep Crystal System (#2) Polish. Buff.
7. Wax tailgate with Turtle Wax "Emerald" Carnuba wax. Buff.
xB looks soooooooooo much better without that logo.
Now, if I only knew what to do about that front (grille) logo. :?:  :?:
When I pulled it off, I had 3 holes in the grille and a 'square' recess left behind. I put the badge back on, for now.
Any ideas??? :?:
Keith
bB_Local_Boy 06-03-2004, 02:23 AM Once you pull the Scion badge off the front, the JDM bB badge pops right in. Mine was done for me in like 30 seconds. (Thanks again Bill!)

(Look how low that Scion to the right and that BCP are, freakin no fender gaps!!)
http://www.speedyzx.com/NCDA053004/DSCF0020.jpg
Or drop a new grill in.... :?
wnsham 12-03-2004, 04:51 AM How about the one on the grill? Can the silver Scion emblem be removed from the snap-in grill design?
match-box 02-06-2005, 02:08 PM debadged my xb yesterday took about 10 min used the floss method did not use any goo gone or heat and it was only about 35 or so outside when i did it. it makes for a much cleaner look
thanx for all the tips.
iamtheduff 02-01-2006, 12:06 AM What way would you recommend putting them back on? I want to remove them and have a buddy paint them matte black with an epoxy paint then put them back on in the same position. What would you recommend using to mark where to put them back on (w/ out damaging the paint) and what type of adhesive.
My box is Black Sand and I want my badges to just look slightly off from that, not the blaring silver that they are. Has anyone tried something like this?

09crimsontc 10-05-2009, 12:18 AM it took me forever to get the 3M adhesive off the car. the logo came off clean but left everybit of the 3M on the car.. took me about 2 hours to get it off! ( using goo gone)
