Just got back from the dealership and looked at my invoice closely and they used
10-40w oil??? The manual clearly states to use 5-30w. Do you guys think I should be concerned about this?

I prefer to do my own maintenance...... but a free oil change is hard to pass up.

BTW, they did fix my steering wheel off center issue without flinching. Invoice said alignment out of spec and adjusted toe-in.

 

I would - too thick of a viscosity and prob will hinder gas mileage. especially now since it's getting colder. prob will make the dealership more aware as well for any future scion oil changes. will it do any damage? prob not...

 

did they charge you for the alignment? :?

Before I had read the manual -- DOH! -- I changed the oil at 300 miles to 15W-50 Mobil 1 synthetic. No problems. However, next time I'll try 5W-30.

 

at least they didnt use WD40

When I left work an hour ago I noticed that those idiots didn't even reset my maint light!!! Damnit........ its little things like that that just ____ me off!!!!! Lets see, wrong grade of oil, maint light not reset ....... did they adjust my front end correctly??!!
Thankfully I can always come here to vent and get answers.

i had my car aligned by the dealer a week after i got my car...
they did front wheel alignment ....

but the corporate rep told me it's normal....????!??!

 

yeah my buddy whos the tech at toyota says that almost ever scion has the allignment problem. Just check your PDI (pre delivery inspection) sheet and look at the number for your allignment. HTH

 

the oil thing is not that big of a deal. you will be fine. just next time show them what the manual shows. i did notice the alignment on my g/f's xA is off also.

 

After reading your post I ran out to my car to check my reciept for my last oil change. Lo and behold the dealership put 10W30 in my car as well. ARRRRGH! I dun think its a good idea to put thick oil in a new engine. Anyhoo, I was wondering why my Scion xA was getting 25MPG even though I've been driving like a granny. I'm heading over there tomorrow morning to see if they'll swap it for me...... a loss of 3-5 mpg may not seem like much, but considering I won't be changing the oil for another 3000 miles that's gonna start adding up.


Scion needs to educate these Toyota dealers about their own cars.

 

Amen to that! The fact is that many of the best dealer mechanics move on to independent shops as soon as they get sufficient experience, leaving the dealership as a training ground for newbies. Unfortunately they are learning on your car!

I doubt that putting 10W30 oil in place of 5W30 oil is going to make much of a difference in mileage, since once the engine is warmed up the warm end (30) of the specificaion is the on you're operating on. In most of California, it doesn't get cold enough to harm anything with 10W oil, as the 10W at 40F has less viscosity than 5W at the sub-zero temps of the northern tier states.

There is even some debate that the use of low-viscosity oils is not such a good idea. The way that theory goes is that the manufacturer specifies higher viscosity oil for other markets and only specifies low viscosity oils for the US market in order to get the small mileage improvement, at the sacrifice of engine protection.
