radar detector/jammer
I don't know if this is the right forum for this so apoligies in advance(for where I posted it and spelling)
I am looking to buy a radar detector or jammer for my tC. I know that scamblers are questionably legal at best(I don't know the exact letter of the law in Ohio). I know that nowadays it there is not really time to slow down after being taged by a police speed gun and a scrambler is appealing because it gives me time to slow down.
Now normally I don't speed, but I am a teen driver and a know that the cops get some sort of sick pleasure from giving us tickets.
So my question is as follows: Does anyone have any recomendations for a good radar detector or scrambler? I don't want to break the bank, but I don't want to get something that's unreliable.

a really good one, and i know some dont agree, but a valentine 1 is very nice! some will say that passport x50 is nice too.... as for radar jammer, this is straight out illegal in any state (as far as i can remmeber)... but double check with your state law on radar detectors and jammers. both might be illegal.
Here is some info. I found on jammers and detectors:
The use of a radar detector in a passenger vehicle is legal in all states with the exception of Virginia, Washington DC. and on military bases.
Laser Jammers and Radar Jammers are illegal in the states of Nebraska, Minnesota, Utah, California, Oklahoma, Virginia, Colorado, Illinois and Washington DC.

if you have a friend who works at a retail electronics store, have them help you get a escort passport 8500 x50, i got mine through a friend who worked at worst buy for $180. (best buy for those of you who don't get it)
all that good stuff is illegal but dont bash on cops they are just doing their job, as much as I hate them while Im getting pulled over, its my own damn fault for getting the ticket... Taking law classes really makes me gain a lot of respect for officers... its surprising what they have to deal with that we dont know about.
I've got a Passport 8500 that I've owned for the past 3 years and really like it. It's probably saved me twice, but I don't speed much anymore.
I would question the legality of jammer anywhere in the USA, from what I know:

Radar Jammers can be purchased through online dealers. Because of the legality issues involved with owning and operating them, they can be expensive. Most models run around $1,500.00 each, this is for an active jammer as opposed to a less expensive, less dependable passive jammer.
This is a good time to think about the debate of whether a passive jammer for radar detectors actually works or not. While passive and active jammers themselves send signals back to a police radar detector and can jam up the signal that it receives, a passive jammer needs to be very close to accomplish this. For example, a police detector can be upwards of 1,000 feet away from your vehicle and accurately measure how fast you are driving. While your passive radar jammer can scramble that signal, it would need to be about 100 feet away to work. An active jammer does the job better and does not need to be as close as a passive jammer, but is the one what is illegal to own. Keep this in mind when looking for a radar jammer to purchase.
If you are contemplating the purchase of an active radar jammer for your vehicle, you should know that they are illegal and have been banned by the federal government since December of 1977. The FCC has banned the use and the sale of these devices and the consequences for repeatedly and willfully using them can be steep. Per the FCC, you could be fined as much as $11,000 per violation (with a maximum amount of $75,000) and you could be sent to jail.

I remember researching this a while back...laser jammers are legal (lasers are regulated by the FDA, but it is possible that state laws may restrict this) and radar jammers are illegal across all 50 states.
Personally, I believe the best combo is a radar detector (highly recommend the Valentine One) and a laser jammer (such as the Blinder).
Laser detectors are useless as warnings, as they'll only go off when the cop has already grabbed your speed.
Radar detectors on the other hand have a chance of giving you some warning to slow down.
Neither are foolproof. My only speeding ticket was from being paced (don't speed at night!), and then there's always the threat of VASCAR.
Personally, I've elected to go the route of prepaid legal services. In my state it's $16 a month - you simply send in the tickets and they take care of it. I haven't had to use them yet, but a person on a BMW forum have used them to get off 50+ tickets.

i did my research before i bought my radar/lazer detector. from what i found out, the beltronics rx65 is the best. then comes the escort 8500, and then valentine 1. those are pretty much the top 3. i went with the RX65 and im pretty happy with it. i've dodged alot of tickets.
When you're talking about the rx65, x50, and v1 I wouldn't say one is better than the other, all 3 are on the same level of performance. Firmware upgrades come out all the time. Honestly, from recent research that I've seen the V1 is pulling out ahead in overall performance, only problem is I can't get one for $180 brand new which is why I have the x50
Ok I bought a very expensive unit ($300) AND it is does nothing for you when you get hit by a heli-coptor or small plane from above during the holidays. Just an FYI when you drive by white stripes on the shoulder every so many feet you are in a trap zone as this is how they calculate speed from the air.
