View Full Version : cricket noise coming from engine????? Any clues?
DirtyMexican 11-12-2006, 03:19 PM Hey guys there is a really low sounding noise coming from my engine, its kinda werid because its not there all the time, when I start my car everything sounds fine but after I drive for about 10 minutes you can hear a noise coming from the engine, its kinda sounds like a cricket? The noise will stop if I barely press down on the clutch, then when I release my foot off the clutch its back? I am coming up on 10K miles and I have no clue what it is? My car is running great to and its not causing my car to run any different then what it has been. Anyone else have this type of problem come up?
thanks for any help in advance!
frogbox 11-12-2006, 04:38 PM Sounds like the throw out bearing is off a little. It maybe just riding on the fingers of the pressure plate at rest, but then as you depress the clutch come into full contact , and stops squeaking.
Also might look into adjusting your serpentine belt just to be sure. and look at the ideler pulley.
DirtyMexican 11-12-2006, 11:39 PM thanks man, Im taking it to the dealer in the morning, Just wanted a 2nd opinion before I go, once again thank ya
BrianxB 11-13-2006, 01:18 AM Belt tensioner. Alot of new Toyotas are notorious for this. My 02 celica went through 3 of them in 30K miles.

Xb does not have a serpetine belt like the celica 1zz does, thus no belt tensioner.
shortbusxb 11-13-2006, 06:23 AM maybe it's a cricket

milesm4 11-13-2006, 05:42 PM Mine did the same thing all that was wrong was it was a little low on clutch fluid.
silverevo05 11-13-2006, 09:01 PM CLUTCH fluid, do you mean transmission fluid?
ryukenden 11-13-2006, 09:04 PM hmmm haven't had this problem yet...
cherryBox 11-13-2006, 09:27 PM CLUTCH fluid, do you mean transmission fluid?
nope, clutch fluid. the clutch uses a hydraulic fluid, also called brake fluid, but that sounds a bit confusing.
and....
 mao shortbusxb
silverevo05 11-13-2006, 09:54 PM how do you check your clutch fluid level or add
thanks
bB2NER 11-14-2006, 03:14 AM I fixed my cricket noise with some belt dressing on the serpentine belts
DirtyMexican 11-14-2006, 11:10 AM thanks guys I dont think its a serious problem, it seems to be running fine but Its goin to the dealer today so Ill let you guys know what they say.
mightyboogaloo 11-27-2006, 02:27 AM Yeah mine is making a similar noise as well. It seems to be mainly when I come to a stop and then accelerate again. It is on the passenger side so I figured it could be the serpentine belt, a pulley, or the alternator. I don't know. I am also going into the dealership to find out soon. Like always though, they will probably tell me "we couldn't hear anything."
DirtyMexican 11-27-2006, 02:39 AM My noise was the throw out bearing, I got it fixed a week ago and all is well. Good Luck at the dealer homie, I Hate it when you hear something and then you get there and it stops making noise, it happen to me and I left and as soon as I got about 5 miles away from the dealer it started and when I went back it was still goin so it worked out. :relief:
frogbox 11-27-2006, 03:56 AM Glad to hear the exterminator got the bugs out
javastan 11-27-2006, 05:50 PM samething was happening on my wife's xB it started at or around 25K. It was the belts. replaced them with some goodyear ones from autozone and it is quiet again.

About how much did a new belt run you? Another thing, shouldn't serpentine belts last longer than 25K? I was thinking at least 50K.
javastan 11-28-2006, 12:34 PM I don't remember how much the belts were. I bought that and spark plugs oil and a filter at the same time. The belt were in good shape, I tend to over do it on maintenence. Her last car was a chevy crapalier that I traded in with 130k and it ran great. It was just time to get a new vehicle before problems happened.
Cinderblock 12-01-2006, 04:07 PM hey my car is cricketing now to, its at 60k miles and an auto. i think its the belt prob gettin old and slipping cuz it only happens sometimes when im stopped and then itll sit their and squeek. should i replace belt? thatll give me a good reason to put pulley on too haha
bB2NER 12-01-2006, 05:52 PM the belt is supposed be changed around 40k

I know... I have one, but I also have a girlfriend that doesn't enjoy her butt jiggling everytime she gets in my car, so I have to turn it off. Not only do I have to listen to her, but the shakes and rattles. Talk about driving me crazy! Maybe I should just get rid of the girlfriend and then I could afford a car without the shakes and rattles... naw... I guess I still like the car... and maybe the girlfriend.
Cinderblock 12-05-2006, 04:03 PM o 40k huh, guess ima lil overdue for a change then haha.
