I suppose it depends on how much your time is worth. Regardless, the ref will ask you to remove anything than isn't CARB approved and ask you to replace them with stock or with parts approved for the car by CARB. I'd stick the stock parts back on, go see the ref and get him to sign-off.

Damn, I've never heard of anything like that here in MA. Does anyone from NE know if they do stuff like this here?

Not like I havn't anything on the box that would be a problem (K maybe underbody LEDS) but that sounds crazy. Are you leagally required to open your hood or was the cop just being hard on you? Did you mouth off to him? None of the cops that have ever pulled me over have been jerks.

Then again, I pull over, roll done my windows, pull the e brake, put my keys on the dash, and only call them officer or Sir , but they've always been nice. Come to think of it, what is the correct way to address a female officer? Can you Say Ma'am?

It's California, dude. It's all about CARB (California Air Resources Board). Just about anything aftermarket affecting the engine is illegal unless it gets approved through a lengthy, lengthy process.

^^Seriously, are you drunk? Either that or you have fat fingers because it sure was hard to read your post.

lilaznjdawg: you got lucky! Usually the cops are real *****$ and look for ish to pop you with. Just put the stock parts back on, have the ref sign you off, then put the aftermarket parts back on.

So because the cop gave you a ticket for breaking the law, he's an _______? You should have researched before you got an exhaust because you would have found out that they are illegal and should be ready to pay the fine. I've been lucky on my bike that I don't have to go in for emissions or have it checked, but i wouldn't call the cop an _______ if he wrote me a ticket, because I know it's illegal.

^^exhausts are not illegal, only systems that delete the cats or emit over 95 decibals (most are around 89-92dcb).

Maybe in CA, but in Illinois they are:
(625 ILCS 5/12‑602) (from Ch. 95 1/2, par. 12‑602)
Sec. 12‑602. Mufflers, prevention of noise.
Every motor vehicle driven or operated upon the highways of this State shall at all times be equipped with an adequate muffler or exhaust system in constant operation and properly maintained to prevent any excessive or unusual noise. No such muffler or exhaust system shall be equipped with a cutout, bypass or similar device. No person shall modify the exhaust system of a motor vehicle in a manner which will amplify or increase the noise of such vehicle above that emitted by the muffler originally installed on the vehicle, and such original muffler shall comply with all the requirements of this Section.
(Source: P. A. 77‑37.)
I just figured that with the strict laws CA has, it would be close to the same. Maybe not.

It California, you'll get fined just for having bad breath. I woudln't be surprised if this is true, as I'm not even sure (given the laws in that state), they deserve to even be part of the Union anymore. The people of California should move to REAL America.

Anyways, you're lucky you weren't in Florida... you'll get arrested for street racing, and I'd pull over just to applaud the officer putting cuffs on you.

In parts of CA, mainly Los Angeles they bring a crusher to the area where the street racing was occuring and just flat out crush your car, no questions asked oh... and its legal too.

Just last night on my way home from work some fool tried to race me, my street racing days ended long ago...

Your lucky you didn't get arrested or worse off end up dead wrapped around a tree (happens in Orange County all the time) all you got was a fixit ticket, pay the fine and count your blessings. Chalk it up to a learning experience.
