Just out of curiousity, I'd like to ask some questions for those
who are more technology savvy than I am...
Now that these consoles are gettin' crazier and even more advanced,
I hear a lot of talk about how these systems run better on HDTV's.
What makes it "run better" on a HDTV than a, lets say, my Sony Trinitron
that sits comfortably in my room ?
Is this the same thing as a plasma tv or a DLP?
I currently have a 73'' Mitsubishi DLP television downstairs and also
a 57'' DLP in my loft but pretty much no nothing about televisions.
Can you play like, the PS3 on there without damaging the tv? I know that
the PS2's can damage a plasma/projector television. But what about now
with the new technology that comes with these consoles?
Sorry if I don't make any sense, I'm in a rush.

Um...they say the 360 and PS3 run better on HDTV because the graphics will be better as some 360 and PS3 units are HDTV capable.
They will play on any tv though.
A Plasma TV and DLP are two different things, a Plasma TV is a type of TV that uses plasma to display the screen. DLP is a TV with a computer in it thats supposed to help in someway.

DLP uses a ton of mirrors if I remember correctly. Don't really know exactly how they work. I opted for the Sony 3LCD grand wega.

Here's the basics...
The new consoles will display a resolution of 1080i. Thats the highest resolution available right now on any television. Most plasmas, newer LCDs, and newer rear projection with DLP are HD ready which means they will display 1080i. Other televisions that arent HD capable will have a max resolution of 780i. So basically to view the best picture a PS3 or xbox360 can produce you need a television capable of 1080i resolution...

It's not that they run better on HD, but because the machines were built to run on 1080i, you won't see much of a difference in the graphics on your standard tv. But if you pop it on an HD, it'll be mind blowing.

Actually, if you wanna get technical about it :P 1080p is the highest out there right now. P for Progressive scan versus I for Interlaced scan. Interlaced scan means that your tv goes from top to bottom drawing every other line, then goes back and draws the others. Progressive draws them all in a row and provides a crisper image.
EDIT: The PS3 will display 1080p. The 360 maxes out at 1080i. And both can display everything between 480i(standard tv) all the way up to 1080i (1080p for PS3)

And that....IS accurate information.. :P
MS did release an update for the 360 to bring it up to 1080p. However, it screwed up peoples machines that downloaded it (typical MS), and so they released another update to fix that....LOL.
BUT HERES THE KICKER.....360's don't have an HDMI output (PS3 does), to channel the full potential of the 1080p.

Good call... I didn't realize about that patch. I was going off of what the stock 360 could do. i guess now someone needs to make a game that will play in 1080p on the 360 or none of it even matters. Not many tvs support 1080p anyway.

I concur. I didn't want to make my PS3 purchase until I had the hardware to support it (i.e. HDMI capable HDTV, otherwise I wouldn't be doing the PS3 justice). So, I will get my tV first, and the next batch of PS3's that roll out will have the test bugs worked out from the field study done from this first release.

All you need to know is
1) 1080P > 1080I
2) HDMI Inputs are a must have for ultimate quality

I found it on an article off of IGN.
I don't remember what it was exactly but pretty much if you play a PS2
for a period of time on a plasma, an image (for example - a HUD display) that
stays stationary will burn into the screen. Which means that once you turn off
the system and lets say, watch regular tv, the image will still be there.
It happened to my old big screen when I played DDR with my friends for a few
hours one weekend. The stationary arrows at the top burned into the screen.
So let's see.
I finally got a 360 for Christmas and I'm kind of worried about playing on my
DLP. I know the premium package comes with component cables to hook up
the system and I've heard that if you use the component cables it comes with,
it should have no problem playing on my tv without harming it.
Can anyone clarify this?

I havnt heard of any gaming systems hurting newer televisions. its similiar properties to computer monitors, newer computer monitors arent subject to "Burn Through". If im not mistaken neither are newer plasma's and lcd's. If that was the case then in turn the same effect can happen from leaving a PS3 on a pause screen on a HDTV. I dont think its an issue anymore.

Not sure what the Rez is on the tv. But I do know it has HDMI inputs. Does anyone know if the xbox 360 premium system comes with HDMi cables or just hi def audio/video?

If you go with the PS3 you will be able to play blue ray HD DVDs. You would of course need the aforementioned 1080 HD TV

all plasma/lcd tv's as of now can still be burned through. i believe lcds are actually less likely too now thought . dlps are much less likely using their led light engine technology. or so says my buddy who sells hd's tv's . all day.

No coating on LCD's = no burn in.

Almost all new HDTVs coming out in 2007 will be 1080P compatible.
And, of the newest generation TVs, plasma are the most prone to burn in with the same info. I'd say that DLP would be next, and then LCD Rear Pro. But, it would have to be some serious time spent on the same info to make it burn in.

yeah and almost all new tv's in 07 will be hideously expensive.
it's been more than just a few years now. plasma/lcd/dlp technology should really have came down in price by now.

360 can only play 1080p HD-DVD movies (with the extra add on) but all their games max out at 1080i which is fine with me until I get my bigger tv since 1080p is worthless unless you have like a 50"+ tv. (I have a 37" lcd hdtv)

One thing to rememebr too...The GAME you are playing has to have the 1080P technology as well...and from what I heard from a sales person at EB Games, there was only one that supports the 1080P on the PS3. You aren't going to see a major difference in most games yet.
I don't know how true this is. Also, this is the next wave for gaming, so just because there may only be one title that was released that supports 1080P, this is where the gaming is going in the near future.
