As I posted before - http://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=21393 - my passenger side mirror was broken off last week. The mirror and wiring are fine - just the bracket that holds it to the door was split.

I called my dealer's service department about it last Monday. They said they would have to take a look at it even though I could tell them exactly what part they needed. And the first appointment they have isn't until today (a week later). What a pain - but what am I going to do?

I take it in this morning as soon as the service department opens and find myself in line behind at least ten other people. After an hour of waiting, they finally let me know what's up - they need to order a new mirror assembly.

That's right - not just the mounting bracket and hardware but a brand new mirror as well. Why? Because Scion doesn't sell the bracket separately - it's the whole thing or nothing! Which means I've got to shell out $300+ for a part I don't need. It just ____es me off but I've got no choice (or do I?) because I've got to get this fixed. It's more than a little annoying to say the least.

So does anyone want to buy a slightly used TCM passenger side mirror? :wink:

I had the same thing happen to my old Saturn a while back. Everything worked, but the bracket snapped off the base right where every screw held it. My solution was to super glue it back together. Not only did it work and hold up for 2 more years, it saved me $250 and when we traded it in for my wife's Trailblazer, they never noticed. If anything, it's worth the 2 bucks to try instead of blindly shelling out the duckets for a new one.

Does it look like bad part design? If so, you should press to have it fixed under warranty.

I tried SuperGluing as a quick fix. Unfortunately, the bracket is made of a porous plastic that seems to soak up the glue and I couldn't get it to stick. Plus, it wasn't a clean break and I can't line up the jagged edges so that you wouldn't notice.

I think I'd have a hard time proving this is a warranty issue since the bracket was broken due to vandalism.

The jagged edge I can't help with, but the super glue you need is the "thick gap filling" variety sold at hobby stores for use on wood. It works for any porous surfaces.

I've replaced 3 mirrors in 2 days at work. 1 of the mirrors look like they shattered the entire thing into a million pieces. The other 2 mirrors were only mildly cracked on the housing and their adjustment motors and stuff still worked. We always just replace the entire mirror. I guess its more reliable that way.

well depending on where you go thats normal

in chicago we charge 92.00 p/hour for labor
all toyota and Scion mirrors come as a assembly, no way around that unless yo uhave a 92 paseo but then all you get is the glass..

so its not just scion but Toyota and Lexus as well, I know VW sells every part seperatley but it seems like a pain

so figure

92.00 for a hour of labor

You could make a police report and then file under your comprehensive with your insurance company. If you have a low deductible.

any car on the planet is this way- ITS ALL ONE ASSEMBLY- quit _____ing like its a scion thing!

You probably won't want to do this, but you could always go aftermarket.
