lug nuts
Hey I just bought new rims and i didn't buy lug nuts from them...does any one know if it is ok to use my stock lug nuts with the new rims or should i buy new lug nuts...if i should buy new ones...is there something i'm going to be looking for ?? size...iono...some one please help!
Depends on the rims. The reason for new lugs is because the stock ones will not fit properly on the new rims. I could not use the stock lugs on my 19" rims because the stock ones were too long, can't fit the lug cover over the lugs.
Let me see if I can help by attempting to explain this. The stock lug nuts have a recessed grip design. There is a washer, but the lug goes in the hole of your stock wheel past the washer. These are the same as Lexus lugs and are not cheap. $7 a peice at the dealer. You will most likely need different lugs for your aftermarket wheels, but whatever you do, save those stock lugs. Most aftermarket lugs will not work properly with your stock wheels if you ever need to put them back on for anything.
From personal experience, I'd say do whatever it takes to get the correct nuts for the wheels. I have a VW that uses lug bolts instead, but the same applies. All wheels have a different type of shape to the nut/bolt. If you use the wrong one, they WILL come loose.
I had my new wheels mounted and installed at a reputable place. They never mentioned any problems with my lug nuts. A week later I had some vibrating in the front end, and found that 4 (out of 5) of my lug bolts had vibrated out. 3 were gone and one was barely attached. The one lone bolt was holding the wheel on. Very dangerous.
If you dont' get the right bolt, you could end up in a bad situation. I know that my stock wheels on the VW were ball shaped and the aftermarket wheels were cone shaped. I think those are the two most common options. Just make sure you have the right ones, especially with alloy or aluminum wheels (and check them often!)
