I use to work for the USPS as a rural carrier, so I occasionally had to use my own vehicle to deliver mail, (I usually had a mail truck), and more than a few times, I had 12 trays of mail (1' wide by 2' Long) across my cargo area, packed so high I couldnt see out of the 3 rear windows. Packages in between the wall of mail and the back of my front seats. Driving from the passenger side of my xB. On State Roads. Going about 70. From the passenger seat. That is what you call crazy.

So what is the most amount of stuff youve had in the box? Other than people, unless you had 7+ people in their at a time.

 

2 mountain bikes, a tent, two camelbaks, duffel bag, two sleeping bags, and a box of energy bars

 

enough crap to compress the rear springs and blind people while driving cross state.

 

i got 8 people + backpacks + costumes

double up!

*btw i also got 5 people + 5 musical instraments (trumpets, baritones, trombones and saxes... dont remember the #)

oh lol cant forget the can drive! me and 1 person, 8 full garbage bags full of cans (smelled like beer for days !

 

7 people and a beagle (not with the 002s though lol)

 

A wood burning stove, and all the flu pipe, 50#'s of dog food, a roll of carpet, a ton of stuff before a party. OH, and me and my bride. :

 

I moved. :D with a dog and a kennel.

 

27 inch TV in the box, plus some other Costco staples, case of water case of beer 5gal bucket of laundry soap. The Costco guys looked at me like I was crazy when I pulled up to have them help me load it. I popped the hatch, dropped the seats and it slid right in. They were quite amazed to say the least and they help load a lot of stuff in a lot of cars!

 

4 bags of fire fighting gear(turnouts) 10 air packs 20 bottles, a tarp and 5000' of 2 1/2" hose and a monitor nozzle

Once I put in an entire 24-foot extension ladder!

It was one of those folding ladders. But still impressive, given the outside size of this leetle car we love.

I also hauled home enough lumber to frame a sixteen-by-ten shed!

'Course, that was more than one trip; I'd pick up several boards at a time onna way home from work. But still impressive, given the outside size of this leetle car we love!

I would have taken a photo, but it wasn't very impressive-looking. Also, for anyone who's interested: The Container Store's folding vehicle cargo mat fits PERFECTLY in the back of our toasters, and it's extremely heavy-duty and configurable in like four different ways. I highly recommend it - it's absolutely worth the price.

Ah, my adoring public. Now I wish I'd taken a picture. Or, ah, checked the load capacity beforehand. =p I think I would only have been under the carrying capacity if I'd sprinted next to the car and steered through the window.

By the time I got home, it looked like I'd skateboarded it... Didn't HANDLE any different, though they're not exactly 'peppy' to start with.

The Container Store is a great place to shop for xB add-ons...I think they really GET us. I mean, they sell boxes, we drive boxes...it's a good match. :D

Collapsible black fabric tote box. Matches the xB in color AND shape! Perfect for jumper cables, road maps, and CD's. The medium one holds an incredible amount and still fits perfectly in our tiny cargo area, but also slips into the rear footwell when you put the seats down for big loads.

Collapsible crate. IMMEASURABLY better quality than the ones at Mall-Wart (and the folks at TCS tell me they had them first). Heavy-duty enough for groceries (though the bastards at CostCo won't let you bring them in) but also collapses enough to also fit in the rear footwell. Get the TCS one...if you want a cheap knockoff, buy a Chevy HHR. =p

"Catch-All" (didn't know the name till I looked it up) Velcros all pretty-like to the transmission hump and ACTUALLY STAYS PUT. I have CD's in mine; my sister-in-law has trash.
