Default Am I ******?

Hey everybody...

Ughh, I have lost one of my keys (one of the 2 main ones).

I'll continue looking for it, but if I can't find it, is there a solution?

Can the dealership change the chip (is that what it is?) in the key that allows the car to be started?

Does anyone have any idea how much something like this would cost?

I really feel , as well as .

Idiot!... (said in a Napoleon Dynamite voice)

If I find my key ("fingers crossed") or get it reprogrammed, I am going straight to the store and buying one of those whistle-activated beeping keychains for situations like this or buying a neon green lanyard and tying it around my neck so I will never lose my keys again.

I am pwned... by me... I admit it...

"Prays to hear good news"

If you have good news, i.e. news that I won't be spending $200 dollars or more, I will be forever grateful.

dont think there is a solution aside from dealer, they will cut you a new key in put in the codes for your car. The key can have the codes changed but that wont go w/ the codes in the car.

Have the dealer 'reprogram' your two remaining keys and tell them you lost the third. They will take out the codes that make the lost key work.

The key cannot have the codes changed, but the car can learn and unlearn codes.

A big thanks to all of you... .

Now, farberio, is this "reprogramming" something you've dealt with before?

Does anyone know how much something like this should cost?

Where did you find out about this learning and unlearning of codes; is it from a manual or something?

Thanks all, I'll let you know what happens.

*Update: I called one of the nearby dealers about my problem. He said that they could reprogram it and said it was $100. I called another dealership and it is about $80 there. So I'll continue looking for my key; and if I can't find it, $80 isn't a bad amount to pay for a lesson learned.

Again, thank you to you all for the input.

I help engineer the Ford and GM keyfobs at work so I know how keyfobs work. I can only assume that the basic features are in every system. (Add/Remove is a basic function)

Make sure you bring all your fobs when they program it or your old ones may stop working too. If you aren't getting a new keyfob it will take the worker 20 mins tops to re-learn the keyfobs. (I think any amount is a ripoff...but I haven't found a tC specific guide on how to do it yet)

If you want to get a new keyfob I know a website where you can get an uncut key for $85 dollars and they send you the reprogramming instructions.

Remember that your old key will still OPEN your car but will not be able to start it or use its keyless entry. Also remember to tell the dealer that you want ONLY the keys you have to work with the car and they should be able to re-program it accordingly.

Here, you can buy the programming instructions for $15 from the same place...then you can post the instructions here so we can all use them!

farberio, I found this:

https://www.scionlife.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=16563

I tried to PM the author of the thread, but he hasn't responded yet.

I want to know if it really works, and if it does, I want to know if it'll work for the tC.

Is this the same process the dealer uses?

farberio, yes, the key fob will still OPEN my car, I overlooked that, but I have nothing in my car anyway.

If anyone who has reprogrammed their keys can chime in, please let us know.

Or if any of you know any of the posters in that thread, could you ask them?

Thanks again everyone .

Woohoo!

I found my key.

Although I am a big time , I'm a loser who has his key!

To everyone who's helped me, I truly appreciate it.

Thank you CuriOuSFisH, farberio, paul34, tomas, 2azfe.

George, I still haven't heard from you, but thank you too!

Still, I do wanna know if George's thread on reprogramming still works, maybe it will help someone else out.

I think I'm gonna get my nipple pierced and attach my key to that from now on. I'll be my own keychain.

Again, thank you, thank you, thank you to everyone!!!

The xB instructions work for the Xb, but probably do not work for the tC.
