Vanilla (my xB) has a ScanGauge II from Zack, and it fits well, works well. Lets you see what your ECU is thinking, and has a lot of good functions. Thing is, if Vanilla ever throws a tantrum (code) I can read it and know what her problem is - and once I fix it, I can reset the code.

Nice unit, excellent price.

Lookin' good box_x! That shelf was made for the ScanGauge! Also I'm jealous looking at those steering wheel radio controls :P ! I don't know how your cable goes but if you lower the steering colum you can push the wire through and have it go right to the OBDII without being in your way with little hassle and it's still easy enough to pull out..if anybody is ever interested I do have extra cables if you want route your cables behind the dash and still be able to use the gauge in another car...

box_x
12-31-2006, 06:55 AM
The cable is run between the steering column and the trim around it. I toyed with the idea of cutting a hole behind where the gauge is and feeding it through there - but I didn't. The flash of the camera makes the exposed cable look worse than it does when I am driving the car  .

The cable itself is not that large, but the RJ connector on the end would mean a good sized hole.

Having one for each car (made more possible by the nice price) is the way to go - so you can "train" the MPGs and get it right. Moving from car to car means you lose all that each time. Also, you can correct the speedo using a GPS and then have it "spot on" and use that rather than the known off analog speedo.

Odd thing noticed: Surprisingly, the OBDII connector on the end of the ScanGauge II cable is actually more rugged and higher quality than most of those I've seen on much more expensive professional OBDII testers. For some reason that impressed me. :)

It's a little more than a 1/2" probably to thick for the visor to look good visually, but they are light so velcro would hold it up there.. tkanaz talk to you Friday ;)

...and the customer service and attention to detail is excellent, too. :)

Just like to add that the Scanguage II, besides being a great "toy" to play with can also teach you a lot about your car, your driving, and how not to suck gas unnecessarily. :D Lastly, since it really is a true OBDII monitor/scanner/reset device, if any of your cars ever 'throw a code' you can read it, determine what the problem is, and reset the code with no hassles.

(My dealer's service people had never seen one before, but they thought it was a great little device. The first tech to spot it asked me about it and after I demo'd it and went back to the waiting area, I could see him calling other guys over to have a look.) :)

Hmmmmm... Obviously I like the Scanguage II and I don't think you can get a better deal than this.

"Tells you when vehicle is "Ready" to pass OBDII testing "

is that for passing state inspection?
what does it do to do that?

thanks

Tomas
02-20-2007, 04:04 AM
Many states emission inspection involves simply plugging in a OBDII scanner and verifying the status if the system - the ScanGauge II does that also, and will show exactly what the state unit will show. (ScanGauge II will also reset any outstanding codes, etc.)

Er, ProctorSilex, here's a little more info on OBDII readiness and state emissions testing...

OBDII Readiness
A vehicle’s OBDII computer monitors engine, transmission, fuel system, and emissions
control performance. Up to eleven “readiness monitors” or software routines
continuously or periodically check these major systems and components under specific
operating conditions. If enough monitors have not completed their checks by the time
an inspection station connects to a vehicle’s OBDII system for an emissions test, the
vehicle is “not ready” and will not pass its inspection.

Certain common repairs or maintenance procedures can temporarily interrupt power
from a vehicle’s battery to its OBDII computer, leaving monitors “not ready” for an
emissions test because the power loss has cleared all diagnostic results from the
computer’s memory. After power is restored, the computer needs to monitor various
driving conditions long enough to run the required number of checks again, determine
whether emissions-related systems or components are performing correctly, and store
this information to be “ready” for a state emissions test.

Until the computer is “ready” for OBDII emissions testing, the vehicle will fail its initial
inspection or be turned away from a re-test. There may in fact be nothing wrong with
the vehicle; the computer simply needs to complete its checks. One week of combined
highway and city driving is normally enough to reset the system and provide an
accurate reading of vehicle performance.

If a model year 1996 through 2000 vehicle is being tested, it can pass its state
inspection with as many as two OBDII monitors “not ready.” If the vehicle is model
year 2001 or newer, no more than one monitor may be “not ready” for it to pass. All
vehicles that fail their initial tests due to catalytic converter efficiency problems (trouble
codes PO420, PO422 or PO432) need to complete their checks and show catalyst
monitors as “ready” before they can undergo re-tests.

Common Readiness Problems
Typical reasons for a vehicle being “not ready” for an emissions test include the battery
being disconnected recently, the computer not completing its checks, or a repair
technician not accessing the right data from the on-board computer. Being aware of
the major contributors to readiness problems can go a long way toward helping you
and your customers avoid them.

Many states just plug into the OBDII jack and if all reads clear you pass.

Tom

proctorsilex

Thanks, Tomas!

Tom

Correct, any good scan tool can do the same thing.

The idea is to keep you from taking a scan tool (or the SGII) with you to the testing station, then right before they test you you clear the codes. It would read "all clear" but that should also reset all the "readiness" monitors and they would not pass you. You would need to go drive around until they all clear (or all but x clears) then come back for the "test".

I have an Equus tool in addition to the SGIIs and it will show these and even has a "green light" if all is well. I used the tool to find a bad idle control valve on my son's car this past weekend, and after I cleared the codes it gave a "yellow light" ( but no more codes). Once he has driven more with the repaired car, it will show green again.

I use the SGIIs just as monitors, the exact temp display and MPG are just "killer" as is the trip meeter. Once trained the MPG is always spot on and the "miles to empty" is a lot more accurate than the gas gauge. If I ever do have a code in a SGII equipped car, I am covered there as well.

Everyone knows the xB dial speedo is off, so having an SGII helps you go the correct speed. But you better check it against a GPS as well. I popped one of my GPS units in the box this morning and ended up having to set my speed about 2% HIGHER than the SGII showed on its own. GPS says 60mph, the SGII was showing 58-59mph. The dial was showing 62-63 mph.

My other cars have mostly been reading high, so you would need 1-2% off the speed to make it right. The S2000 is about "just right". The box is the only one I have checked SGII VS GPS and found the SGII (actually the car's computer) was reading LOW.

Now I do have snow tires on mine in 185/60R-15 on the OEM steelies, but that is OEM tire size.

For me speedo calibration is the same as it has always been: mile markers and stopwatch. :) Hold a constant indicated 60 MPH and time how long it takes to go a mile. Do that enough times and one can zero in very nicely (used to have to do the same with my old Halda SpeedPilot so the rally gauges were right on).

My box has oversize tires, so my correction is different, but the SGII appears to be "right on" now.

(It is amazing how much the SGII can help "refine" one's skills on squeezing the last ten feet out of a drop of gas. Just by paying attention to what it's telling me, I upped my city mileage appreciably.) :)

If you use milemarkers, be sure to use a bunch and average. You can't trust government workers to put those things EXACTLY one mile apart, can you :D ?

Dennis

Tomas
03-01-2007, 10:16 PM
Nope! Milemarkers, especially in more urban areas, are often "offset" for various reasons. More rural markers tend to be a little better. :)

In my state there are even five mile segments of highway with larger markers labeled 0 through 5 and a warning sign before the markers letting drivers know this is a "speedometer calibration section." Those one can trust, all others are subject to averaging.

As a final check of speedo calibration I always try to do a ten mile run at constant speed. (Amazing how difficult it can be to hold one's speed.) For odometer calibration I generally do a final 100 mile check.

(Yes, I am anal. So? :P )

Setting the 'fuel economy' stuff takes a few goes at it, filling the tank, refilling the tank, setting the info each time, but eventually it seems to come out pretty doggone close. I just filled up this afternoon after 313.4 miles on this tank, the pump delivered 10.01 gallons, and the Scangauge II expected me to need 10.0 gallons. :) I think it's got it now. :D

Great little gadget.

I did learn to not calibrate the amount put in each time as it seems to throw it out of wack for me, if it gets too far off I just do the reset to default (after noting what my speedo percentage was) change the engine size and tank back to 1.5L and 10 Gallons, fill the box to the top hit FILLUP>DONE then drive till about a 1/4 tank then refill set the amount pumped, then FILLUP>DONE after that I just do FILLUP>DONE without the amount and it seems to be fine!

my 2005 xA does not have CAN which is required by the dash hawk.

The ScanGauge II does NOT require CAN - it will automatically detect and adjust to the data stream it sees at the OBDII port.

I think they are all drop-shipped direct from the manufacturer, so you will get the latest they are putting out.

They were supposed to be coming out with a "memory module" you could connect to the spare connector on the SGII. You insert a memory card (SD?) into it and then it would record the data from the SGII as you drive. Then you could download the info from the card into your PC and chart the speed, load, temp, etc. At some point, the firmware in the SGII was to be upgraded to handle this. Anyone with an older SGII would have to return it to be updated if they wanted to use the external memory. This talk was all from MONTHs back.

I don't see anything about this on their web page now, so maybe they hit some snags with doing this? I have no idea if the current shipping SGIIs have firmware to do this or not - but I am not sure I want/need the external memory anyway.

One thing I wish they would add is a BUTTON LOCK. The buttons are too sensitive and their either should be a lock to lock them out, or maybe just require a 2 second press to activate each one. I get my SGIIs all set like I want (MPH, RPM, MPG, and Water Temp) then I bump a button and have to cycle through all the gauge options back to the one I wanted.

Tomas
03-18-2007, 07:49 AM
It's not so much a problem with the ScanGauge not being able to read something as it is the Scion ECU not providing those readings to ANY OBDII unit. Hopefully someone with a tC will pop up and say which, if any, readings the tC ECU doesn't provide.

wow, that thing is smaller than I thought. (it's hard to put it in perspective in an xB since I've never driven one.)

does anyone know how much room might be behind the roof panel right above the dome lights? I was thinking it would be cool to cut a rectangle hole and recess it into the dome light hump. the scan gauge is only like an inch thick, right?

or would that put the screen at too much of an angle for the driver to see?

yes it is small and i believe it would fit there, but depending on how you sit or how your seat is positioned, it might be hard to look at that spot while driving....someone on SL put their XM/Sirus radio tuner screen in that spot...looks clean, there's pics somewhere or a thread on it, but i don't remember where

220 is normal, fans kick on at that temp.

flushing the cooling system will not resolve an overheating problem.
first things first, check coolant level.
check for a plugged or partially plugged radiator.
if a car overheats in city driving or stop and go traffic check cooling fan operation.
if a car overheats on the freeway, possible plugged radiator.
if car overheats all the time, check thermostat.

i could go on, but from what you said, i'd check coolant level, check for plugged radiator and look to see if the core of the radiator or condenser is covered (plastic bags, pet hair, dirt..)

but yea..the idiot light is useless, i hate the red/blue only indicator light.

if a car overheats in city driving or stop and go traffic check cooling fan operation.
if a car overheats on the freeway, possible plugged radiator.
if car overheats all the time, check thermostat.

i could go on, but from what you said, i'd check coolant level, check for plugged radiator and look to see if the core of the radiator or condenser is covered (plastic bags, pet hair, dirt..)

but yea..the idiot light is useless, i hate the red/blue only indicator light.

ok, back on topic :P

On the xB the fans go on around 204...I'm not worried about the temp going up it's just hot outside and sitting on 580 with the AC on in traffic for an hour brings it right up...I'm going to switch to the Water Wetter for fun just to see if the claims are true. If I smell coolant that is another story!

Thank to you guys at 365Motorwerks. I got my gauge in the mail today. Talk about simple to mount and hookup? I had mine mounted, cable routed (out of sight) and running in 6 minutes. I turned on the car and tested it but I won't be able to do a comprehensive test til later because I'm home with the napping baby.....

Kudos to Linear-Logic as well.

Here are two pics of my 6 minute install.

I played around with my user defined settings until I found the amber color to match my clock and radio. Took me a few minutes but I got it.

I have something that may help everyone in the color department, but I will have to post it later, as Im at work right now.
