That's right, the xB received a poor in the side impact crash test from the IIHS. Here is the article:

Here we go again. If we all drove small cars, there wouldn't be a problem. It becomes a problem when you have to worry about getting T-boned by a freakin' Ford Excursion or Chevy Suburban. As a result, everyone keeps buying big, heavy cars and SUV's just so they feel safe and have a fighting chance. Now we have a nation filled with HUGE gas-guzzling SUV's to drive 3 people to the mall. I could take my xA or my wife's xB over to Europe and have a real fighting chance in any accident. Over here? Yeah, I'm probably gonna die.

My wife drives a volvo and I never have to worry about her getting hurt in an accident.

I agree...but the Volvo name wasnt always Ford until 1999 when Volvo was bought out for $6.5 billion (if my memory doesn't suck) The pre 99 cars are genuine Swedish built and are sturdy like a rock. The only thing you can complain about in the swede volvos is the A/C and the electrical systems, everything else is pretty top notch (oh yeah...and they're ugly haha)

anyways...back to the poor xB that they demolished and the poor crash test dummy who bounced his dome off of the crash barrier

I also had a good experience in my last xB and how it performed in a crash! My '05 BSP xB was rear ended/clipped at 65/70 on the freeway and it spun 540 degrees. It didn't flip and instead the vehicle stability assist kicked in and held it up (in addition to the traction control). Even with the entire back end and rear passenger area compromised/crushed in...there was no injuries AT ALL...not even whiplash!

...Of course the insurance company chose to repair it at $13,500 in damage rather than total it but I was still able to sell it later without too much of a depreciation on it and it was later Toyota Certified.

Why is that? Didn't you check to see if the xB has side airbags? It seems reasonable that a car without them wouldn't fare as well as one with them in side collisions. My xB will certainly do better in a crash than . . . say . . . one of my motorcycles. I try to avoid the crashes . . . .
