Hey guys, I was trying to install my S-Pipe today and all I had was an adjustable wrench. I figured sure...lube up the O2 and let it sit for a while no problem. I jacked it up and went to work. I took my wrench and adjusted it to the O2 sensor on the header and Cranked on it.

The sensor has never been removed before so it is a pain in the ___. The wrench starts to move....I look back at it and it looks like the O2 sensor has melted from the stripping...

What size NON adjustable open head wrench should I use for the S-Pipe? 15/16? And is there any hope for me removing the O2 without breaking it? :nails:

i took my stock s-pipe with the o2 sensor still on it to autozone and asked them to take it off for me. They got their tool and broke it loose for me for free (:

I did not think of that. I will try to take it off tomorrow and if that does not work I will run to pepboys and see if they can do it for me. Was it hard to remove the O2 plug from the wiring on the car?

no it wasnt hard to unplug it but its a little tite and you have to feel for where to push and pull! so be careful

First I would advise you to go out and buy a metric set..... :rofl:


Though realy it's a good ideal to have a set for both. Open end wrenches and espechialy cheap ones tend to open a bit and strip bolt edges. Though even the right size wrench might not help with stripping. Seems alot of folks have had this problem when removeing the O2 sensor.

Mine stripped... I had to dremel the threads back on... still works though. :D

you dremeled the threads? now THAT's impressive.

yeah, I understand why the metric set but I was going off of a Tech thread that was posted on installing the Antifouler and it said to use 15/16....so metric should not be a problem. I have a full ratchet set but not a big enough open ended wrench =/ Time to spend money at sears I suppose!

Hope it works today, I really want that full exhaust going. THen the rims can come >D

Consider one of those sensor shrouds from autozone... they come in handy more often than you think.

It's a long, tubular metal piece that has a slot for the wire and makes contact with all 6 sides of the sensor. It's only a couple bucks.

If you try an open wrench, it only contacts 2 sides, and could easily strip it further.

Also, worst case scenario... the sensor pops out while you're driving. Your car will still run (just not prefectly well), you'll get a CEL, and it's instantly reversible by getting that sensor back in there and pulling the battery for a few minutes.

Yes, it's happened to me.

Oddly, the little sensor hole made the car sound like a cat-less LS1. Not bad, but it isn't exactly pleasant to the ears.
