Got in my car and realized something was definately wrong when I hit the gas, I could accelerate, but not at the rate I'm used to.

-Also realized my rpm's would climb to 4-5k but I would accelerate at that rate.

Got on the freeway a few miles later, cruising in 5th, smelled something burning, first thought it was my tires but it wasn't obviously, then this smell went away after a while. Same thing, cruise in 5th, hit the gas to pass, rpm's jump and comes down to 3k or so and catches.

Was told it was a slipping clutch, but that seems like it would be gradual, not seemingly instantaneous.

1. Slipping clutch?
2. Covered by warranty?

i'll take it to the dealer on monday and pray for the best

It sounds like it's your clutch (no warranty there) although it shouldn't go out at 40k but it's definitely possible depending on how it's been driven. I was just going to ask that, anyone borrow your car lately?

nope, only me, and I drive it fairly reasonable now that i'm older.

as long as you haven't been adding performance mods it should be covered (depends on the tech and the dealership). most of the times even if its not directly covered they will probably give you "good-will" kind of deal. wich means they will cover it once and once only or toyota may pay for the parts you have to pay for the labor.

all I can say is go your dealership and ask. just explain what happend.

and as a tech I would say its slipping. there's not enough force in a stock clutch to hold and it may be glazed from riding the clutch to long, burnouts, racing the engine ect. not accusing your driving just giving possable senarios. but it could also be bad parts. it happens.

now all that i would understand, the only time I can remember smelling burnt rubber from a burnout is when my girlfriend got on the gas too much about 6 months ago, I personally haven't been pulling any of that. As far as riding the clutch too long, that's a big nay as well since I got this car. gonna find out tomorrow, hope for the best

You're not going to get a roasted clutch warrantied at 40k miles, modded or otherwise.

Let's see you car doesn't accelerate as quick and there is a burning smell...sounds to me like your driving around with your parking brake on.

Sounds like you need a new clutch. I believe that's the clutch slipping. It may or may not be covered by the dealership, I'd try it just to be sure.

mattvs: That's a good amount of miles actually, I know a guy that went through his evo's clutch in less than a month and he's gone through three tranny issues in about six months (mostly stock). It's definately possible.

You misunderstood. He won't get warranty work approved for the clutch with 40k miles on it.

Ah, okay. I just think it's funny when people are like "you can't break a clutch that fast" cause I've seen it happen.
