Default 2 Brief Intake Questions

1) Does anybody know the size of the stock intake pipe (2 inches? more/less?)

2) What can you all tell me about short ram intakes? there is little info out there. where the performance gains are low end/high end / if a heatshield could be beneficial / and possible dangers / increased throttle response / etc tell me something!

Thanks! :D

I believe the only SRIs available are ARC induction box, Weapon R, Top Fuel power chamber, Umnitza, and ebay. I would say 90% of intakes just increase high end w/ very few intakes not robbing some low end.

i had a short ram intake pipe from ebay that i put an aem dryfilter on. it worked good on high end but low end suffered alot. the stock intake box with an k&n drop in filter works better over the whole power band i think.

Really? Thats not what I expected to hear at all.
I figure that the full CAI has a lot of piping for the air to travel through and thats why it sacrifices low end power, but cool air resulting in better high end power.

With the short ram, I figure its basically the same as the stock intake only with a bigger pipe and increased airflow allowed, but not a increased distance to travel. Am I wrong here? I mean, I guess so since you're saying that you lost alot of low end...

hmm, that almost sounds intrusively loud. So a sri is louder than a cai huh? It sounds like you wouldn't recommend it over stock

I just installed the Weapon R SRI and I do seem to have lost some low end as well, but nothing that is noticeable under normal driving conditions. Only if I really step on it around 2K RPM does it feel that way...... but thats kind of dumb anyway. Yes, SRI should be louder than CAI. But it doesnt get loud until atleast a 1/4 throttle....... probably more.
If youre rarely or never going to get to the upper revs, intake is pointless. At that point stock will better on all scales. As for K&N drop in, there is no pretty much no measureable performance gain. The only advantage is that you can save $ by not having to buy a new filter every few years.

So it sorta defeats the purpose of using it in normal driving conditions if the only real benefits are around 3.5k and up while actually slightly hurting low end...

yes, under normal driving conditions, intake is useless, unless a person's normal driving consists a lot of upper RPM driving.

Right. So you two seem to agree. tc-guy said its for looks and you're saying its basically useless under normal driving circumstances. Maybe an intake is not for me then after all. I was just looking for a way to free up some hp more than what i've done, but I spend 99% of my time between 2.5-3k rpm doing a lot of highway driving and traffic (curiousfish, you know what i'm talking about living in queens, lots of traffic, and I commute from LI to CT)

Thanks for the honesty guys. you've really helped me understand

yes, absolutely understand haha! Yeah, commute wise, youre better off with the stock intake and stock exhaust. I think underdrive pulleys may suit you better. I had them on my previous car and I think they are a better idea b/c the power gained is throughout the range.

Yea pulleys are something to look into, i've just heard about some dangers, but thats neither here nor there. I'll have to read up about those. I was so close to buying an intake, but i'm real glad I decided to make this thread first!

What if the intake (stock, SRI, CAI) was coupled with a header and exhaust?
Would that allow the intake to give a good whole power band increase or would I really feel it in the upper rpms?
Or would the whole power band increase come just from the header or just the exhaust?

Am I making sense?

I know the size of the rubber intake tube when it enters the throttle body is 60mm (same as TB inner diameter.) I did not measure the size of the tube that exits the airbox but I believe it is the same, if not maybe .5inch larger. I just did part of the GFI intake, so far gains are noticible but its an intake so nothing spectacular here. It seems as though it is more willing to pull from the lower RPMs and the top end is a little improved. But I haven't had enough time to "test" it completely.

Awesome. So the stock pipe is 60mm which comes out to about 2.5 inches (just like most intakes), only injen is bigger at 3.0".

I was looking on yoursciontc.com and saw that there are 3 stages of the GFI, which did you do? (waiting for the rest of the review)

im going to try sumthing that u'll be interested in spect. im going to cut my black intake pipe and attach it to the stock intake box with a drop in k&n filter. i also don't have the wheel lining because of my kit. the way i see it i will get all the benefits of a cold air intake but look completely stock.
