I know there are allot of DIY led swappers on this site, so I made some easy to read and work with diagrams for the tC. They will def help out the new led modders. These are the same diagrams that come with my kits. I thought it would be nice just to give them to everyone. They cover the HVAC mods "thanks for the details engifineer, you rock!" They also cover the gauge cluster changes.

Some of the led colors dealing with the automatic tranny lights on the gauge cluster could be wrong.. Have not had an auto in for mods in awhile! Let me know if you guys have any information, corrections or input. Hope they help!

You can also feel free to purchase the HVAC mod parts from my website as they are in stock and also leds, I stock them all! Check out the led section under www.garage1217.com Leds and parts are under the kit section.

Do you need any resistors for changing the lighting in the gauge cluster?

Garage1217
01-12-2007, 03:15 AM
Not in the gauge cluster

mattieg
01-12-2007, 03:15 AM
Also if I mix some white and some blue LED's, will the blue light bleed into the white? I ask because im gonna do a two tone for the gauges but would like to buy blue LED's for the warning and indicator lights. And what are the "SUB on/off LED's"?

Garage1217
01-12-2007, 03:32 AM
The warning lights do not fade into the cluster at all or between themselves. Sub on / off leds are on the ac controls for like the recirc, or ac, or defrost... the little lights...

I have a question about the different colors on the gauge cluster.

I plan on doing a blue and red theme, like the new Jettas, blue numbers, and red needles/redlines

When I am swaping out the LED's are there dedicated ones for the needles, and redline sections? If not, wont the red sections turn purple?

Also are there any other "shades" of blue out there? I have seen the blue swaps, but they all look too aqua to me, I want that rich deep blue like on the Jettas.

Thanks for any help, I really want to do this.

SquallLHeart
01-12-2007, 06:56 AM
the blue on the leds are a nice blue in person... not really aqua like you mentioned.

there aren't really dedicated leds for the needles.. and the redline itself is part of the gaugeface.

hmm.. the redline doesn't turn purple when lit up by a blue led... dunno why, but it doesn't.

Look on Garage1217's page and look at the featured swap. I can personally guarantee that the LEDs look MUCH better in person. ;)

Thanks for pointing me to that site, the cluster looks good, but im still looking for something a little richer, more like a royal blue.

I could also do all white LED's and use a blue filter of some type, but I don't know where to get the filters?

I don't know where I saw it, but someone swapped in UV blacklight LED's, and thats the color I want. I just don't know where to get them, can somebody point me in the right direction?

I REALLY want to do this swap.

RoswellScion

The blue is almost more of a rich violet color. It especially looks this way when you turn down the brightness just a tad.

UV is damaging to the eyes as well as it'll be annoying and discomforating after awhile. no one does that type of swap and i won't do it myself even if someone requests it.

Garage1217
01-13-2007, 09:13 AM
Bingo, UV not good. Also uv is more of a shade of violet than royal blue... The led blue is an amazing blue. Look at most any blue led at an electronics store and that is the color you get. You could describe it in person as a candy blue.. has depth to it... Pics never show how good or rich it looks in person. Also the two color two tone that I make does use filters which is the only way to get the two seperate colors.

I have a huge assortment of items coming in to make new reliable non fading custom colors. I already offer deep purple, yellow and pink. The new colors I will be offering are....

aquamarine everything "looks sooo nice in person.. very soothing to the eyes"

Ice purple, which is somthing I am developing... Looks allot like the purple / white you see with oem HID kits..

Hot pink, almost a purple / pink color..

And working on some other sweet goodies :)

what is the blue wavelength of your led's? i've see the blue led in person and wasnt my taste. i want a deep ___ blue look.. any info?

Garage1217
01-25-2007, 11:25 AM
With leds you will generally not get a deep blue, however I can prodce a deep almost navy blue as a custom color. General wavelength is 475nm.

magyver
01-25-2007, 09:09 PM
custom sounds expensive... no?

Garage1217

Custom colors run about $25 more in general.

woffledong
01-27-2007, 06:32 PM
so where about are the leds for the needles? are they in the gauge leds cluster? i wanna only do the red on the high end of my tach and speedo. thanks.

Garage1217
01-27-2007, 06:54 PM
That is a question I get all the time, the needles are not lit by seperate LEDs, they are lit by the same leds that light up the gauge cluster. People tend to think they can change the needle color by simply swapping an led under them. Not so, you have to paint them or change them colors by a few other methods...

woffledong
01-27-2007, 08:42 PM
well i figured they were the same one, do you know how the needles change from one color to the next when your tach gets to about 3500. is that from wiring the furthest right led red or is it a paint trick?

Garage1217
01-27-2007, 09:23 PM
It is a simple light filter trick on the gauge surface. If you choose white needles, I offer the RPM change free.

Just had to say, I did the swap last night and DAMN it looks better in person than in the pictures! I tried white but changed to pretty much all blue. Swapped around colors in the idiot lights and HVAC status lights including the fading temperature ring (that's AWESOME in person!)... Not a hard thing to do, and VERY well worth the time spent! Good job on the diagrams, I'm sure they'll help lots of people to come! While I was in there I doubled up on the odometer and HVAC LCD LED's, don't know if anyone else is bothered by the "bright spots" on the LCD screens or not.. (I could always see that there were 2 LED's on the odo and 3 on the HVAC) So I equally spaced 4 for the odo and 6 for the HVAC, and now it's a nice even light. But a PITA to do! :) Keep up the good work!

Garage1217
02-02-2007, 06:33 AM
I only sell kits that are surface mount resistors and the power IC. They are not the older kits with hole through resistors run all over and cut traces. So yes, they are direct replacements for ones on the board.

Im a newbie when it comes to modding cars so I dont know much, but I would love to change the color of my dash lighting (the needle, the mph numbers, gas indicator, etc.) I know oznium has what I need but what do you actually do with them? How much is a kit for just the guage cluster? Not the Hvac.

I need the guages to be blue and will have the needles red so maybe a red led under the needles will bring out the color more. Then anything else you would like to throw in is fine with me lol.

I am doing these for a buddy and that was his request. "Blue guages, red needles, the rest is up to you" lol. :P

Oh I know I already have the needles painted red with a white undercoat. I was just reading one of the posts that enfineer posted a while back about how much better the needles look when you outline them with a red led lol.

Didnt you Sir, have a kit back in the day that you sold for like 30 bucks or something? lol. Ah maybe im thinking of something else. lol. Ok have a good day.

I think in order to keep the red LED for the needle from bleeding into the rest of the gauge cluster, you will have to isolate it so that it only illuminates the needle. If im not mistaken

I like how you recommend my method (instead of the colored stickers), yet you were talking trash on it in another post. Just wait until you test this method out, you'll realize the gauges will be a little dim, and the best way to fix this... relocate the LED's. Also, to get a brighter needle, bring the LED's closer. Hmmm... my method does make sense after all, but what do I know. I've only been modding scion gauges longer than most of the other modders on this forum...

Here we go again with his trash talking and dissing other swappers. This Guys a joke. Now i know why he's not recommended unless you want your gauges back in 3 months with them in semi working condition. haha. Use garage, squall, or engifineer. They do better work and have a FASTER turnaround time and acutally TEST your gauges before they ship it back to you. And also, they don't rape you on the price and claim some BS 40% deal  .

Jim, jim jim. You really don't know what you're talking about do you? Whose gauge cluster did I keep for 3 months? 1 persons, and that was explained (I won't explain again, and again).

Also, how do the other modders do better work? I have a 1 day turnaround time, and I test all the parts before shipping (that is a new policy I have).

Also, whats this crap about my prices being so high? Show me you're not talking out of your juvenile a$$, and list in your next post everyone's regular prices (including mine). Then everyone will see how you, imagin, and eveyone else who I have never done business with is so full of sh**.

Here, I'll start for you.

ledmods.net prices:

blue gauges, blue needles, and blue indicator lights: $80
blue gauges, white needles, blue indicator lights: $120
custom LCD screen: add $20
color changing needles: add $20

blue HVAC: $100
custom LCD screen: add $30

blue factory radio: $100
custom LCD screen: $30

steering wheel & door controls: $45

3rd brake light conversion (without a hacked up housing): $120

Garage's prices:

Squall's prices

Engineers prices

go ahead, fill in the above prices, and show me and everyone else reading, you have no idea what you're talking about. I want to see who gets raped on the prices.

I've also been a forum sponsor for well over 1 year. which other modder has done that?

Lets see if you update your prices now. O and yea, still looks like your raping people compared to Trungs prices  Trung you're awesome, thanks for providing these prices to me so I can shove it down his throat

O and yea, LEDMODS.net is an idiot. He asks me whos cluster he kept for 3 months and then right after that he says, O YEA, I DID KEEP SOMEONES, but i wont explain it again. hes such and @$$. he answered his own question. And many others on this site have had issues with their gauges not working due to poor poor workmanship from you. Anyways.....

SQUALLS (TRUNG) PRICING
blue gauges, blue needles: $60
blue gauges, white needles: $70
(extra indicator lights, FREE)
custom LCD screen: FREE

blue HVAC: $70

blue factory radio: $80, but ALWAYS suggest to customer to save the money for aftermarket.

he response so far to "cheap" reasonable prices was this..

I don't "reel them in" with a cheap swap price, and stick them with a needle conversion charge, and indicator lights charge. I've always been upfront and honest. No nonsense. And now that I am offering a sale on my services, I am now by far the least expensive. Get your facts straight.
and isn't he kinda contradicting himself by saying he doesn't "reel in" customers with a cheap price? isn't that what he was trying to do by saying he charges the least? attract customers?

ohh but with e extra stuff the some people charge people for... uhmm.. so wait a sec... so to add.. color changing needles.. he charges $20 more? which is basically the same as the... $120 gauge swap.... okay.. so instead of installing two same color leds... you switch one.. and then charge $20 for it?

and then hmm.. extra $20-30 if you want him to take and replace a piece of polarized plastic? sure... oh wait... he has to first scratch the piece and maybe decide not to replace it but to just reuse it.

someone try to help me understand... i'm so confused...

sorry Jeremy... mr. you-know-who had to cause this thread to go off-topic... i'll clean it up later... but i'd like to at least get an explanation to help things get clarified... as i want to clear the confusion prior before i make stuff disappear.

What the he** is Paul doing on MY post? Get this looser off my writeup and stop trying to put your name in a writeup and post I created to HELP scion members.

And Paul, your work speaks for iteself, even the customer that you told "you would make it better" had to send your CRAP back to me to fix. He did not ask you to mod my work, he was HAPPY with it, and AGAIN is 100% HAPPY with it over your crap.

This really ____es me off, I help out as much as I can do everyone on this forum and am ACTUALLY A SCION OWNER. You just jump on here, screw peoples crap up, make false promises, lie to customers, and generally make the swapping scene look like crap. You know how many people have told me "I am afraid to send my stuff to anyone because of that ledmod guy"??? Yeah you are loosing business for ALL OF US.

You know I had to go and buy multiple gauge clusters and HVAC units to loan or sell to your customers that had to go for 3+ months without anything? Some of which I have not gotten back off loan status which puts me OUT OF MONEY because of your personal CRAP.

As of this day I have had to repair 6-7 if your "quality jobs" yeah right *LOL* Multiple cold solder joints, stuff shorting out and the latest MESS OF CRAP you did for my customer.

Stay off my posts period Paul, I do not like parasites trying to feed off my hard work and name that I have built for myself through quality work, fast shipping, excellent customer service and ALWAYS being there for my customers.

Hey guys. Just an update I am putting on all of my posts. Some of you swappers may know that the an7710sp power IC is no longer in production and not available anyplace in the usa. This was a wonderfull package size that was an exact match to the oem. Engifineer "Dave" did a great job locating it and figuring out the overall hvac mod so kudos to Dave!

This has caused a small delay in my shipping until a reliable alt was found and tested out. The new power ic is a bit larger but actually a tad quicker to install. I tested the chip thermally without a sink and it has no issues with the small requirements of the leds and is quite overbuilt! Since the original power ic has been axed, there may be different options people come up with. This is my choice to run with this package size and install method and it will be included in all of my kits. It will come pre-cut but not pre-bent as it could cause shipping issues in bubble envelopes. The legs are cake to bend with just your finger.

Below is an example of one of the chips I have been testing. The actual unit that will be in the kits is a different brand, but same chip basically :) Excuse the small amout of flux on the board *LOL* Just a test unit!

This is what the new power ic will look like installed. Again this model number chip works perfect but is not the unit I will be including in the kits. Visually they are identicle. Also to note the center leg is bent the opposite way and is attached to the ground pad "common" for the old power IC. The mount is rock solid and there will be no issues.

Garage1217

There is no 431 resistor required for the swap. Only

430 = 43 ohm
131 = 130 ohm
561 = 560 ohm
681 = 680 ohm
4220 or 422a = 420 ohm

Garage1217
07-28-2008, 11:48 PM
Paint the needle white, then place the film in the areas under the needle were you want it to change. Kind of trial and error but it works out great and the color change is very vivid.

Akrylic09
07-28-2008, 11:54 PM

Garage1217
07-28-2008, 11:58 PM
hmmm you have to place the film just right and get the needles as close as possible to the gauge faces. Works like a charm for me, just have to mess with it more.

Hey jeremy,

have you done the swaps on the xB2 yet?

Garage1217
08-07-2008, 05:18 PM
Yes I have, they require a new gauge face & needles if you if you want any other color than LED red "stock is an amber / orange, and at the current price of gauge faces from another company, I just do not see it as a good solution cash wise.

If you would like the cluster red, turns out amazing :)

Akrylic09
08-07-2008, 05:26 PM
so taking the needles apart like the tC's is not an option? its cause my gf wants a white leds with a white guage face so its not amber and pink needles.....and my concern was if i swapped it to white, would i need to swap out the resistors like on the tC?....

Garage1217

Just be carefull, the leds are glued to the board, you have to pry up on them to get them to release and many rip a trace when doing so. Also be sure to scrape off the black center plastic.

The 3 leds that light both defrost buttons, and the mode button don't work. I checked everything but they still wont light up. I had the middle one reversed at first, after a couple of months I finally noticed it was switched and thought I found my problem. But that didn't do it. Any thoughts??

idk....it could always be a bad led....i noticed that when i did my Cluster and HVAC, there was always one "bad" on in the bunch....once i swapped it out it worked perfectly.

Could it be just one of the LEDs are bad causing a break in the circuit, so none of the 3 work? Hope that's it. I just finally got my lcd screen swapped for a non cracked one..its great. Now just gota get those 3 working

99.999% of the time leds are damaged in install, not really dead out of the package, in the last oh... 2000+ leds I have soldered, I have not had one that was dead out of a reel.

My guess is an led was overheated upon install, or one of the resistors going to that particular string is not making good contact. No idea really unless I can see it in person.

You are welcome to send it in. If it is simple to fix the issue, then just pay for return shipping.

I may have a spare cluster from a loca. I will ask him if he is scrapping it. I can pull a servo off if one of yours got nuked.

So I got my LEDs and I am about to dig into this project. However, I have some questions for anyone who is willing to answer:

A) What do I need to be aware of with regards to "if you do this, you will break everything"? Heating? Melting? Alignment? Anything?

B) Is there any cheap electronics equipment anyone recommends practicing on first? Old alarm clock, etc?

Take your time, use common sence.. it takes about a second to solder a connection or desolder when you make contact. the hardest part for me was making sure i didnt loose an led or resistor when i took it out of the package.
use some good tweesers makes sure they all sit flat when you solder.
For the LCD if you are removeing that go get the iron with the rubber bulb to de solder they are not expensive and will save you a ton of time and will be much cleaner

so you are suggesting getting both a soldering and a desoldering iron?

yup there not real expensive, 15-20 bucks. Might be able to swap the tip on the desoldering ones from rat shack

What LED's are needed to change out the color in a Pioneer tc stock head unit?
Picture here: http://www.bmajr.com/downloads/scion_pioneer.jpg

I took the face off and they were not PLCC-2 LED's. They were really tiny.
Would like to do Pink for a girl if possible.

Thanks

I just bought some stuff from him but do you know if pink ones are available?

I put PLCC-2 Pink leds on all the other parts of the car and she wants the radio done as well.

Thanks
