Default Ok... so I want this to be my next project...

Alot of the DSM guys do this... they take a pic microcontroller and use it to stop the TCU from controlling the shift points and instead they use two buttons ("paddles" if you will) to up / down shift...

I'd really like to start researching this and was wondering if anyone has done something similar before?

Please keep out your "lol shifting an automatic" comments because this is a little different and more complex than just moving the shifter from L/2/3... instead of just inhibiting the gears higher than the gear selector, you are locked into one gear unless you tell the car to shift.

Thanks

edit: http://turbobricks.com/feature.php?content=winter_06

that guy did it in his volvo, i must know how!!

so yea.... this is basically using L 2 3 and D

L will keep you locked in first
2 will keep you locked in second
3 will allow you to use anywhere from 1 through 3
and D will enable the overdrive gear [4]

You do realize that doing this to your transmission will eventually tear it to pieces, right?

Maybe He's going to use that as an excuse to get a real manual?

who knows, i still cant figure out why people downshift in an auto

If you want to downshift, just step on the gas and gooooo

Sacrificing half a second reaction time is not worth sacrificing half the transmissions lifespan.

No sir, it isn't.
I do kinda like the idea of paddle shifters (read -> DSG) on a tC though. That's just not the way to go about it. Actually, I don't know how one would go about that.

you would need a new transmission all together
the tC transmission was not built to handle what a DSG can

2 inhibits 3 and 4... when you are stopped in 2, you are in 1st gear...

2 should not inhibit 3 and 4

and yes it may be in 1st at a stop, but why would you want to be in any other gear at a stop?

of course it does... if you are in "2" on the shifter, the car will not shift into 3 or 4... well maybe if you hit the rev limiter it might, i dont know... but i dont think it does.

whatever the case may be, how would a paddle shifter be different than this?

a paddle system would allow you to directly control the solenoids so you could lock into 1st gear, then lock into 2nd gear so you could actually be stopped in 2nd gear, etc... it gives you much more control

If your car stops in 2nd gear, it will stall
maybe not because of a torque converter
but why would you want to stop in 2nd anyway?

This doesnt give you anymore control than the shifter.

i'm sorry just don't do it... there is no point. it's a silly thought to start with... putting money like that into a tC is a waste... it's a $17k car... get serious... why don't you put that money into paying the car off so you can get something worth dumping money like that into.

right, but that's just the paddles.
then you need this:
