I ordered an aftermarket cf spoiler for my xb that ways about 5 pounds. It didn't come with instructions or hardware. The dealership says they install the factor option spoiler using rivets. A local body shop says only the two top mounting points can be used without having to drill from the inside. If I want all four mounting points secured, drilling will be req'd to reach the bottom two points. The shop also told me that if I don't want to drill at all that I can buy some (3M) double-sided tape. Has anyone had any experience with mounting aftermarket spoiler(s), or using double-sided tape. And if you recommend double-sided tape, what kind would you recommend?

i say drill the holes then cover them with rubber grommets or spray some anticorosion spray on & in the holes, just to stop water from getting to any non painted metal 8)

My problem is that I'm trying to avoid having to drill from behind the rear hatch. I can only mount the spoiler from the top two points with rivets to do this. With ony two rivets it wouldn't be the most stable spoiler. I'm thinking maybe rivets on top and double- sided tape for stability. I know it doesn't need to be incredibly stable, since it is only for show and not for down-force.

how much is would the dealership charge for installation? if it's OEM style, then it should be easy for them.

Ok, I actually have the instructions in front of me for the factory spoiler. The factory DOES NOT mount the spoiler with rivets and the factory spoiler does mount securely with only TWO bolts. The two bolts mount into what are called "well nuts". They are rubber mounts with threaded inserts in them used for mounting spoilers and roof racks. When tightened the rubber squishes against the surface and seals it (a little silicone wouldnt hurt). The other two holes that get drilled are where a couple grommets go and their are pins on the spoiler that slide into them to hold it in place. Also, the toyota spoiler comes with templates that you tape on to the box to locate where you have to drill the holes. Takes the measuring out of the equation. The install kit is actually available seperate from the spoiler through toyota. I ordered the install kit for my CF spoiler. If you are close to CT and dont want to install it yourself, bring it by and I will whip it on their for ya. Let me know.....

If I remember correctly, it was like 30 bucks, but they might be on backorder now. I ordered mine on Wednesday and he said the only one he found was in LA and it was shipping out of there....

Mind asking where you ordered the wing, price? So far the cheapest I found was $199. Any other websites I should look at before purchasing?

Would dealerships install the CF wing?

I got it mounted, finally. Here's how I did it. First, having a friend help hold the spoiler up flush and center on the panel. Then marked the outline by putting tape around the edges of the spoiler and outlined it with a pen. Then I measured the two bottom bolt holes, horz. and vertical. I marked these measurements on the panel, and I put tape on the panel so the pen marks could be seen better. To double check my measurements I screwed the bolts in the spoiler and put a line of paint around the edge of the bolts and put it to leave a mark of paint on the tape. The paint lined up perfectly with my previous markings, so now I got out the drill, starting with small drill bits and slowly working up to larger bits untill it's large enough for the bolts. Now drilling through the back was slightly more difficult. If you drill directly straight through the back metal you'll notice that the hole will be running through the curved part of the metal. So I would be able to later put rubber sheet metal caps over the holes I drilled the holes about 1/4"-1/2" back on the flat metal. Again drilling and slowly working my way through larger bits. The only problem that nobody told me about is that in between the outer sheetmetal is a third sheet of metal. Probaly a hinge plate. So be prepared to drill through 3 pieces of metal on each side. I drilled holes approx. 1/2" in diameter on the back to fit the bolt head and bolt washer through. Now with holes drilled, and a friend holding the spoiler in place, take a flashlight on the backside and make sure you can see the soles before final mounting. Since I didn't come with any gaskets, I put on 2 rubber gaskets just around the two bolt holes to keep water out. And for spacing and extra support, since I'm not using the top two mount points, I put 3M double-sided tape on the rest of the back side of the spoiler. I removed all my tape for outline markings. I also used the double-sided tape to hold the spoiler on while I inserted the bolts from the back. After that, I took black paint and painted the inside and the edges of the 2 holes. This also covers up any naked metal. Finally, using 2 sheet metal plugs 1/2" diam. to plug the holes. Now it looks perfect, like it came from the factory.

another safe install tip

drill 2 hole on top, and double side tape on the lower part. this way more secure. ( for people didn't purchase factory spoiler)
for people who already have spoiler, just screws it with same top 2 holes. For better install, double side tape on bottom also.
