Default front passenger seat belt locks up

Is anyone experiencing front passenger seat belt locking up withut releasing. Whenever my passenger moves, the belt locks and then will only ratchet tighter. Any thoughts? The dealer replaced the seat belt assembly and nothing changed.

if your driving or braking and the passenger is moving
then thats why that happens.

Mine does that, take your foot off the brake when they want to move.
The seat belts lock up like that when the brake is applied.
The passenger needs to just sit back and relax and it will free up, it is a safety feature.

Not necissarily when you press the brake, it depends on how hard you are pressing the brake. theres a mechanisim that when the brake is applied hard enough it leans forward and catches the teeth.

I appreciate all the answers. Does the passenger seat belt behave differently than the driver's? Once my passenger's belt locks we hear a ratchet noise and it won't free up unless unbuckled and fully retracted.

Mine does the same thing. My girlfriend always complained that it locked up and wouldn't release untill she unbuckled it. I thought she was just stupid until I let her drive one day and I discovered that the passenger side one does indeed do it.

Not to be rude, but is your passenger a big person? If you pull the belt out all the way, it will ratchet until it's fully retracted. I THINK they're designed that way to help you secure cargo.

My Blazer did this, too.

And no, Slow, I ain't callin' your girlfriend fat. Either A) she's pulling the seatbelt ALLL THE WAY OUT for some reason, or B) it's defective and should be taken back to the dealer.

If you're only pulling the seatbelt out a little ways and it's doing the ratched thing, you really should get it checked out. It should be under warranty, and let's face it, seatbelts aren't something to screw around with - if they're having problems, it should be a high priority to get them fixed.

The pass belt is suppose to ratchet when it is pulled out nearly all the way. It is to hold a child seat or booster seat in. It is designed that way. If size is a problem go to the dealer and get a seat belt extender. They are no charge items. Ask me how I know.
