Default 50 watt Bazooka Powered Subwoofer

Circuit City is offering a 50 watt Bazooka for $129.99. Since I skipped out on the one Toyota offered for a arm and leg, Im thinking will this one be powerful enough to do the job of boosting the HU's tunes. My boy who sold me the car at the dealer had the 100 watt one in the dealership's tricked out xB and blew two of them out! but not with the OEM HU but with another poineer HU :? So could my 6 disc 135watt HU be too strong for a 50 watt powered sub?

Depends. A couple of things you've got to look at. The 6 disk (and the single disk) stock HU's are 160 watts (max at something like 5% distortion). If your in the upper range of the HU's volume you could smoke the tube. I've noticed that I can kill my amp (kick into protection) real quick if the stock HU's volume is up above 55 and I'm using Feel or Hear. These SSP Eq settings can reak havoc on an after market amp (which is what the Baz tubes got). If you normally don't climb all over the volume you might be fine, or stop using the SSP. I've got the bass all the way down with a 200 watt amp running 2 temporary 10's in the back and if I touch the bass boost on the amp it kicks off. This is a simple adjustment on the amp, however you might find yourself constanly adjusting it. Aother thing to look at is if the tube is running high level in not RCA's RCA's will be cleaner than most high level converters (speaker level to RCA level converters). If you run the 35 to 50 wats of power directly into the tube you could smoke the amp if it does not step the power down greatly. The Baz tubes I delt with back in the day (mid 90's) didn't do a very good job of putting out a great amount of bass for the price. I would seriously suggest you price the tube. Then price a 10 inch woofer, small square pre fab box and a 200 watt or so amp. Chances are you'll come out cheaper and get better sound out of the 10 in a box with a decent amp. The baz tubes have always disappointed me for the money and the amount of sound they put out. If your thinking of doing the tube for ease of installation think carefully. You still have to run power, ground and remote turn on, plus signal cables, which can be picked up behind the desk. In my opion it's still a PITA. I poped the amp under the drivers seat (took about 15 minutes for just the amp install) there is more than pleantly of room for even todays gaudy huge powerless amps under there. I could prolly fit a old 12 disk changer and an amp under the pass side. Somthing else to think about. Busting that back window is not a problem for anyone. Your amp and sub are right there for the taking. The Baz tubes are held in with velcro or a strap (the worlds worst mounting idea). In about 4 seconds the tube could be gone. (Not to mention if you don't have tint it is in plain sight. A free tube would make a decent addition to any girlfriends car. At least if you did a amp and 10 in a box, the 10 gets robbed, your out about $100 an can add another one in minutes. If the tubes gone your out a couple hundred (for a 50 watt tube). I would not even bother wasting the money on a '100 watt' tube when you could get something that pounds for the same price. Remember your deck power is around 45 watts a speaker adding a 50 watt 8 inch tube won't make that much of a diff. and you might end up regretting it and possibly attempting to sell it.

Here's a cheap alt it can be done cheaper:
1 Pioneer or Rockford Fosgate PS1 10 inch woofer (currently the Rockfords are dirt cheap I get them for $42 each) Best Buy
1 prefab box (about $40 squre simple basic sealed)
1 200 watt bridged amp (Currently the small 2 chanel from Pioneer suprized the hell out of me costs about $100) Again best Buy
Couple feet of Amp power wire (about $15) Yep Best Buy
High level converter ($20 or cheaper) Best Buy (no I don't work for them or love the store, it's just a fairly cheap place to get stuff)
6 Pack of beer and abuddy for 2 hours at the most ($4.95 for the cheap ish or $7.90
for Carona) or swing by my house I've got 2 24 packs of Carona to work through still)
You'll end up with 3 to 4 times the sound of that 50 watt baz tube. You could even step down to an 8 and save about $20

Keep me posted.
