Default Weight Reduction

Up Front: If the mods see fit to move this thread feel free, i just didnt exactly know where it fit into things. It covers both interior/ exterior, yet is a mild performance gain. Hope i didn't cause any trouble.

...Now back to the topic at hand. Today i decided to reduce as much weight from my car as possible while maintaining a full interior. For those of you who dont know, the general rule of thumb is for evry 100lbs removed from a vehicle you gain 1/10th in the quarter mile. While this is by no meens a significant gain, it very well could be the difference between a 14/13 second car, not to mention the fun factor which will play on those canyon runs.

A little info before we start. If you plan on performing the modifications i have completed, please note cabin noise WILL increase substantially. I performed this procedure for the sole fact that i want as many performance gains out of my car as possible while maintaining a slightly modified look. I could have gone all out and removed the rear seats, carpet, door panels, and etc but i didnt see fit to incorporate this. Just remember, if you hate engine noise, road hums and etc, this is NOT for you.

I began the modification by raising the vehicle and locating anything i could possibly remove. Instantly i found a source of between 7-10 pounds in the rear of the car. If you look at either side closest to the rear bumper you will notice two solid steel tow hooks which can be removed via the four 14mm bolts securing them. I then moved to the front of the car and removed the two bars which join the body and crossmember. This was another source of between 5-10lbs which provide minimal suspension stiffening. upon removing these bars, i took the vehicle for an extensive ride to make sure there was no difference in handeling, braking and acceleration. As you can see i kept exterior lightening to a minimum. These cars were built well on the exterior and there is not much room for improvement.

Exterior saw a total of between 15-20lbs reduction

Next, the interior saw a dramatic makeover. I began by removing all the seats, center console, and kick panels. When you remove the carpet you will notice quite a large amount of padding/ insulation. In my case, it ALL came out. Here is a pic of the passenger side only (my camera died by the time i reached drivers)

The brown spots you see in that photo is where there is a paint matched sound deadener which is very dense and weighs quite a bit. This material can be easily removed with a rubber mallet and a flat head screw driver using a chiseling method. You can also peel the insulation off of the carpet. In the photo above you can see the outline (and left over crap) from where all the insulation was. There is a variety of sound deadeners used from cloth, to styrofoam all throughout the passenger compartment which individualy dont weigh much, but collectivley come out to around 10-15lbs. The deadener which is glued to the floor is good for another 5-7lbs on its own.
This is what things were starting to look like on JUST the passenger side:

...You will notice i also removed the heater ducts running to the back seats. This is for two reason. First, with all the insulation out, the car will be harder to keep warm, so the outles which are behind the front of the dash will now dump onto the front passenger/ driver. Second, I never have people in the back, so i didnt really care.

Well, i hope this gets evryone off on the right track. These pieces alone net between
35-50lbs collectively, and thats not even counting the obvious pieces such as the jack, spare, tools, rear insulation and etc which could very well net another 50 lbs. As i find more areas of improvement over the next few days i will update with some mroe photos as well.
