Default best bang for the buck ?

well , my sister inlaw just purchased an XB and about 2 monthes of driving it .... her and her twin sister always complain that its so slow . i drove it and i think it drives fine . so my question is ...... what is the best bang for the buck mod ? for instance . for subarus , you get a turboback exhaust and some engine management , you have a totally new ride . any inputs would be great cause hse's alrady talking about trading the XB in .....

well, if you can afford a turbo, that's where it's at.

It all depends on how much buck you have to spend on some bang.

Why'd she buy it if she thought it was slow? If someone is already talking about trading after only 2 months, best that they do it.

An intake, header, and exhaust costs roughly $800-$1,000 and will free up maybe 10 HP. But most of that is at higher RPMs. It'll make the car drive a little better but it'll still be "slow"- still in the same performance range as other subcompacts.

A turbo or supercharger will give a big increase. Either is at least in the $2,000 - $3,000 range, maybe more. It'd give a huge increase, but probably also won't pass emissions, burns more gas, warranty voided, wear out other drivetrain components faster, nobody in their right mind would ever buy it off her, etc.

So tell her to sell the xB if she's not happy driving it. They have great resale value. She should lose less money selling it than she'd spend for power upgrades. Heck, make her an offer if you like it!

I/H/E . . . intake header exhaust. For the money. Turbo and supercharging apps for the xB will net you the most gains but will cause for higher bills, such as fuel costs. My understanding of most forced induction is that you would need to use premium gas.

I/H/E setups can be had for a minimum of $400. If you go get the YDR intake, OBX 4-2-1 Header and a custom exhaust job. The headers and exhaust a shop could do for you and the intake just takes a little patience.

Unfortunately I have a feeling I know what your sister in law wants and the xB will not deliver without spending some $$$. She will either have to get used to it or like someone else said trade it in for another car. the guy I bought my rims from did it with his xB and upgraded to a S2000. Good Luck on the issue.

a light weight crank pully is the first and for most bang for your buck than the i/h/e. al that together should make 12-15 hp dependin on where you buy it all at and if you take your time and get stuff on sale insted of at one time like i am doing you can get nice stuff for around 650$ and you have boosted the cars power 10-12% from stock

if you want better throttle responce (and slightly improved fuel economy)

use some thing like this

http://www.ecotekplc.com/cb-26p.htm

it makes it pretty crisp responce and doesn't feel like theres like a bubble popping either..

it also works well with a turbo and not a supercharger as stated on their website...

Well, if she has an automatic, then it *is* slow. If it's a manual, then she's probably upshifting too soon, expecting the car to rocket ahead from 30 in 5th gear- won't happen. Drive with her, see if it's just an issue of not knowing the right style to get the most out of it...

For everyday use the Header/Intake/Exhaust/Pulley is the best. It makes the car more fun to drive without reducing reliability or adding other costs (unless you break something driving spiritedly).

I have that setup and it really makes the car feel more competent. I don't worry about pulling into traffic or merging onto the interstate. It's not a racer by any means but it definitely gets rid of that feeling that the car doesn't really want to go.
