I pulled my xB into the parking garage this morning at work and as I got out noticed a guy who had just parked too checking out my ride. We silently walked to our office building and got on the same elevator. As the doors shut he said:

Q. How do you like your Element?

A. It's not an Element; it's a Scion xB made by Toyota. They just became available in our region in June. I love it; it's a great car.

Q. So it's a Hybrid?

A. Nope, gasoline engine; but it gets great gas mileage.

Q. Oh; thanks.

He got off on a accounting firm's floor; I smiled to myself. :) RPM

Most people around here don't know what the "F" an XB is. They ask and I tell them "it's a Scion XB". They say "A what?" Then I say it's made by Toyota, then they're like "oh yeah!" Stupid people!!

I got that constantly, especially when I first got the car 4-5 months ago.

I've given up explaining "Scion" -- I just tell people it's a Toyota. As far as I'm concerned, it's a Toyota. "Scion" is just a marketing scheme, not a real brand IMO.

As far as the hybrid thing, I got so tired of being asked, I just started giving out random answers. Sometimes I'd say yes. Sometimes I'd tell people its electric. I told one guy it was hydrogen powered. LMAO.

Maybe I'm not helping the cause by spreading disinformation, but it gets old being questioned all the time, I just wanted to have a little fun with it....hehehe

It happened again Friday morning...
I pulled my xB into the parking garage at work and as I got out noticed a different guy who had just parked too checking out my ride. We silently walked to our office building and got on the same elevator. As the doors shut he said:

Q. How do you like your new car?

A. I love it; it's a great car. It's a Scion xB made by Toyota.

Q. So it's a Diesel?

A. Nope, gasoline engine; but it gets great gas mileage.

Q. Oh; thanks.

He got off on a life insurance firm's floor; I smiled to myself. :D RPM

The cop part reminds me of when I first got mine. I was getting used to getting tons of looks and stares. We are driving home from dinner and we come up on a Sobriety Checkpoint. They are checking traffic going the other way. I figured I'd get a little attention, but NOBODY even looked at the car. I could've been invisible. they didn't even like wave us on or anything. After a minute, I just drove on thru... :?

I'm seeing a lot more of them on the roads here in the Bay Area, mostly stock.

these stories are great and all (rest assured i have plenty myself), but what i don't like is having to pay more attention to other drivers to avoid getting my box slammed into. Everyone seems to stop whatever they are doing to look and that includes driving. i have owned my HL since April, and i have come close to getting run over many, many times. you know how it goes, when people turn their heads to look to the side while driving, they inadvertantly start veering in that same direction. I wish the horn had a little more gusto.

i love my box, but i have almost gotten neurotic about keeping lots of distance between me and other drivers. i just don't want to wind up like the others who have posted pictures of their box after getting creamed. How many HL's have we lost already (at least the ones who post on the board), 4? 5?

the attention is great, but rubber necking is dangerous.

Horn is a quick cheap easy mod. Any neighborhood auto parts store carries a bunch of different types. I swapped my road runner horn out the first week with a "average" sounding horn. Then this past weekend I was at the Dream Cruise here in Detroit and the Chevy "New Revolution" semi was driving by with an air horn you could hear for a mile. Needless to say, the all powerful air horn is on order. Can't wait to use that on someone!

I never just get a few questions, I don't know what planet you guys are on. I get crowds, i came out from grocery shopping one day after I had just gotten the rims on it and I had 18 people standing there and pointing. I just started carrying business cards from the local dealerships along with brochures. I just hand them out and leave.

I'll answer simple stuff such as:

"do you like it?" "yes"

"does it get good gas mileage?" "not the way I drive it"

"what is it" "it's a scion, it's from toyota, the lexus is toyotas high end, scion is the entry level"

anything more difficult than that or more ignorant than that gets the business card and brochure and i leave.

So I was racking my brain thinking of something worth using my first post to say, and it was delivered to me tonight.

Middle Aged Guy in 7-11 parking lot: "What the hell kinda car is that?"
Me: "It's a Scion xB."
MAG: "Who's it by?"
Me: "Toyota."
MAG: "It looks like some kind of flying car or something."

I was pretty disappointed he didn't ask me what it runs on, I've been dying to tell someone that it has a flux capacitor.

I have a Mercedes Benz hood ornament and trunk star on my debadged xB. last night was a beautiful night. Everyone was driving with windows open. I'm in the right lane heading south on Broad St., Philadelphia, and this white car in the left lane is matching my speed. We get to a stop light that turns green. I have a car stopped in front of me so I can't go yet. The white car with two bros. in it doesn't go either, but there's no one infront of them. I say to my passenger: "I wonder why thy're stopping for a green light.
The next block they slow down and pull behind me. Then they pull up next to me and slightly ahead; then right next to me. They ask me what kind of car it is. I tell them it's a Scion xB. They ask me if Mercedes makes it, because their friend got one, but they didn't know it was a Benz.
I told them that I was just having fun. I said: "This is my $15,000 Benz."
They liked this and said it was a cool idea. They were going to tell their friend he should do this.
About this time the people trapped behind us as we were driving and having a conversation started honking.
That was the first time I've had a pleasant conversation with another driver while moving down Broad St. 8)

I had this happen to me too. I told the guy that I haven't pumped gas in so long that I wanted to remember what it felt like. He looked at me funny then got back into his 18 wheeler and drove off. The guy next to me was cracking up.

I've have gotten a lot of stares, waves, thumbs up
and a host of questions and comments as well...

Is it really fast?

Is that a baby hummer?

Is it a concept car?

Oh my god. No car should be that square!

Is that mini-cooper truck?

Is it a 4WD mini SUV?

Reminds me of an old British car.

Looks like a Lapin Spiano.
(Asian Kid. I asked him to spell it so I could look it up)

Kinda looks cool in a retro sort of way.

My favorite was at the gas station where a guy was asking general question
while filling up his huge SUV. He was shocked when I told him it gets up to 34 MPG.
I said ...
“Yeah… not bad for a square car. Just think how much better it would be
if they made it aerodynamic.”

Sort of like an old Ganster car.

It wouldnt be too hard to make the xB look like it though...

Taken from Autoindex.org (http://www.autoindex.org/bodies.plt?no=777&___=85)
Info: Alto Lapin was released in January 2002, and soon proved its popularity among female consumers. Sales of the vehicle have surpassed the Wagon R (Suzuki’s best-selling model) level in recent months. The box-shaped minivehicle features a roomy interior and is equipped with specially designed parts in both exterior and interior, which are similar to household appliances or furniture which evoke the image of daily life.
