**Updated contact info below**

After recieveing multiple PM's about my wheels and not being smart enough to either save what I type nor make a thread, I've decided to bite the bullet and make a thread. In this thread, you'll learn how to go from this:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/AvusBluR/DSC06157.jpg

to this:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/AvusBluR/DSC06389.jpg

First, the Disclaimer (dum dum DUM!!)

This mod is performed at your own risk. You assume sole responsibility for the execution and outcome of this mod. I will not be held responsible if you are blind/dyslexic/a blithering idiot and your wheels come out ugly, runny, are different colors, smell funny, or cause small children to point at your wheels and commence dry-heaving.

That being said, if you follow my directions, you should be fine. :silly:

Anyway, here goes:

Materials:

Plenty of time (about 6 hours all total)
good weather (sunny, low humidity)
suitable painting area (room to work, well-ventilated)
jack
jackstands (at least 2)
lug wrench
wheel cleaner
clean towels/cloth
2 or 3 folding chairs
x-acto knife
masking tape
lots of newspaper
3 cans Dupli-Color high-performance wheel coating, black.
5 sheets 400-grit sandpaper
buddy to help you (optional, bvut helps a LOT)
food and drink to feed the buddy
Guiness (if you're of age, for later :lalala: )
**Patience!**

Procedure:
-Clean the wheels very well. Make sure you use a cleaner that will strip off any brake dust/wheel wax/etc you micht have on the wheels. Basically you want to get the wheel as clean as possible down to the clearcoat finish. If you don't the paint won't stick.

-Jack up the car, remove the wheel.

-Remove the center cap. (It pops out from behind)

-Begin taping. For my wheels, I chose to 'extend' the spokes out to the edge of the rim. You can do any design you want. Some people leave the entire edge silver, some paint the entire wheel black. Basically tape over anything you still want silver. Also, cover the tire and the inside of the rim with newspaper. Don't forget to tape the valvestem! At this step, I found that it was easiest to stand the wheel up on a folding chair and rotate it like it's rolling as opposed to laying it flat and bending over it. Unfortunately, I only found this out after 3 wheels  This is why you do as I say and not as I do!!

-Tape the centercap. Cover the entire centercap with tape, and use your finger to get it down flush with the centercap, to the point where you can see the curves and contours. Now with an x-acto knife, cut away everything but the scion logo itself. Peel back the tape you don't need and reinstall the centercap.

In this pic you can see how I taped the spokes and centercap, and also see my buddy Sam and his devilishly stylish cutoff t-shirt:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/AvusBluR/DSC06362.jpg

Here's a close-up of the centercap (and Sam's front emblem we were painting that day):

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/AvusBluR/DSC06361.jpg

-Sand the wheel. This part hurts the most!! It's a weird feeling taking sandpaper to a perfectly good wheel, but you get over it after the first few spokes :D Make sure you sand everywhere, paying special attention to curved surfaces. Every few minutes take a few seconds to wipe off the wheel with a cloth. Don't forget to sand under the centercap and also inside the lugnut holes.

-Painting. Make SURE the wheel is clean. Now spray 1 medium coat of paint. The Dupli-Color wheel paint doesn't have the 'fanspray' nozzle that other Dupli-Color paints have, so be careful and make sure you are getting even coverage. If you don't you get small paint 'chunklets' that look like the rubber marbles at the edge of a racetrack, and you have to re-sand and repaint. (Don't ask me how I know this  ) This is where the patience comes in!! DON'T try to rush it...the more you rush the worse this will look. Give it about 10 minutes to set, and spray a second medium coat.

At this point, you should have this:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/AvusBluR/DSC06384.jpg

Set the wheel aside where it won't get hit by dust, debris, flying leaves, etc. Preferably, under direct sunlight. (you can take this time to start on the other wheel) Wait an hour or so for it to dry, then start peeling back tape. Careful!! The paint has a nasty habit of sticking to the tape if it's not dry enough. You'll have this:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/AvusBluR/DSC06373.jpg

Reinstall the wheel. It'll look like this:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/AvusBluR/DSC06374.jpg

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/AvusBluR/DSC06390.jpg

Repeat 3 more times, and you should have this:

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/AvusBluR/DSC06392.jpg

http://i21.photobucket.com/albums/b280/AvusBluR/DSC06388.jpg

A few hints:

* I reccomend having at least SOME experience with spray-painting before you try this. It's not difficult, but not exactly good for a first-or second-mod.

*DONT RUSH!! Rushing causes you to forget things and make small stupid mistakes. If you're like me, you're rediculously impatient to see what it will look like, and also an uncompromising perfectionist. These do not go well together. Take your time, think about what you're doing, have your buddy double-check your work, etc. This will prevent you from redoing a wheel 3 times like me. :loser:

*Make sure you have plenty of time. Taping takes about 20-30mins per wheel depending on the design you want. My taping took me about 45mins for the first wheel (because I had to figure everything out on the fly) and 20 mins for the other three wheels. Obviously if you want the wheel all black you don't have to budget very much time for taping. Instead use that time to check and recheck your prep work.

*make sure the weather is right. A sunny day with little or low humidity will make your life a LOT easier; it will shorten your drying times and let the paint stick faster.

*Make sure your coats are even. too much paint will cause runs and drips, which will mean that you have to resand and respray.

*Try not to get the wheels wet for a week; that's how long it takes for the paint to fully cure. After that, it's very resillient and holds up to brake dust, road salt, etc., very well.

in the picture it looks like you sprayed over the center scion logo in the middle of the wheel.. but when you finish its still silver.. could you please explain that little detail please? and thank you =]

also.. is it ok to put a few coats of clearcoat on the rims so they look glossy? if so would i put the coats after each coat of black or after i finish all the coats of blacks ?

I taped over the scion emblem in the centercap, so that everything in the centercap except for the emblem would be black.

For those that wanted to know about clearcoat: Dupli-Color does make a clearcoat, And originally I wanted glossy black. However, when I tried to apply the clearcoat, it left a nasty white film on the wheel. I figured that it might go away and dry clear, but it didn't. I had to sand down and redo the wheel. If you guys are going to do clearcoat, I'd recommend trying it on some other surface or on a practice wheel first.

In the end, I didn't do clearcoat and just left it flat black, which looks surprisingly good. It's not completely flat, but a kind of semi-gloss black that I'm perfectly happy with.

Thanks for the feedback guys

There might be other brands that offer a gold color..there's a Chevy Cavalier around here with gold painted factory wheels, so there must be. I'd imagine that the procedure would be the same as mine :D

Sorry to hear that! You don't have to wait for winter to end, but you do have to kep checking the forecast to see when it won't precipitate for a few days....at least 3 or 4 days with no precipitation should be ok. Hope they last longer the next time!

Yeah its best to wait here in Missouri, like last night we had hail and a tornado warning and they suck at perdicting the weather here too. This way I can do it outside too because last time I did it in a poorly lit wharehouse and I wasn't confindent about the way I was doing it but then they came out good.

BUT, since the paint that has chipped right after I painted my wheels, no more paint has chipped off so Im confident it will not chip for a very long time.

Im in the process now of repainting my wheels. I should get the two front ones done tonight, then tomarrow Ill finish the back two. This time I got a better sand on them and I have set it up so that I dont have to drive my car for the next couple of days so if it does rain its in a nice whearhouse and I can let them dry for a good day.

Which is good because I have a car 2 car shows in Kansas City next weekend.

Hey I saw this thread and I thought the wheels looked awesome. So when I was on spring break from school I painted my wheels with a couple of buddys. I thought they came out great, except for a few stray lines, but I touched them up the next day. I painted two coats of flat black (Duplicolor) but there is no clear coat. Here's some pics of us painting the wheels and calipers while we were at it:

The car was floated on to the stands

Also painted the calipers blue (Duplicolor also).

The results after a week of curing, a car wash with some wax, and a trip to the po-po:

well for the no clear coat comments ..... I myself dont recomend that..... they make matte clear coats to retain the flat look.... a color paint is only a pigment and has no hardeners for longevity...

and congrats on your wheels holding up that long with no clear coat..... this is a very good mod and can change the whole look of the car.... I did this myself before i found this how-to .... took me 30days start to finish (i live in an apt and did all the sanding by hand)

Sand the wheel enough to scuff the finish so the paint will grip. I didn't use any primer, but it can't hurt anything if you do.

Heres the supplies:
http://inlinethumb62.webshots.com/4221/2004935410057829701S500x500Q85.jpg

cleaned the rims inside and out with soap and water only and let dry:
http://inlinethumb30.webshots.com/5533/2082883900057829701S500x500Q85.jpg

Taped and primed the rims only. No sanding cuz it took too long:
http://inlinethumb36.webshots.com/2723/2018802260057829701S500x500Q85.jpg
http://inlinethumb47.webshots.com/6318/2650525870057829701S500x500Q85.jpg
http://inlinethumb47.webshots.com/5038/2147775220057829701S500x500Q85.jpg

Finally I sprayed the inside wheel well first with one thin layer and then I did the out side last with a thin layer:
http://inlinethumb49.webshots.com/4144/2934599330057829701S500x500Q85.jpg

http://inlinethumb06.webshots.com/3781/2387717450057829701S500x500Q85.jpg

For best results I sprayed the outside lip first and then moved inside. Ill do second coat later and then gloss. Oh yeah i didnt even use the enigine degreaser so i returned that and got another can of white primer cuz i ran out. More piks of the finished results later. Payce out

Hmm... I am about to paint mine black again, I want to give it a nice glossy black. Would you want to sand or primer Steelies?

Btw, what is the best paint to use for the wheels? I don't want it to chip or anything. >_>

Iride_xB04
06-05-2007, 03:35 AM
so you dont have to sand it?

yelloxtc
06-06-2007, 02:17 AM
I didnt sand the original rim whatsoever. But that can run the risk of paint not sticking to the wheel properly under high heat conditions.

I dont drive around much on my stockies so thats why I decided to go with a non-high heat condition paint. It might chip off and it might not. We'll have to see but here are the pics of the finished wheels.

Oh yeah and everything i bought could be purchased at your local wally world. Gold paint, white primer, and clear coat enamel. I returned the duplicolor clear wheel coat cuz it sucks.

I know its not the clear coat i wanted because when i sprayed it on a test surface, it came out milky white and i could barely see the gold underneath. Duplicolor ecthing primer..then paint 5 light coats of graphite (face).
Then 7 coats of mirage paint (lip).... then 5 coats of clear. Then let them sit in the sun for 2 days.

JUST AN FYI TO THOSE AFRAID TO SAND: I did not sand. I felt the same way... what if I want to go back? I put 4 coats of black and 3 coats of clear and it's been 2 months and no sign of chipping. I agree that it will chip but it is an easy fix. This way I can always remove the paint if I want. Just a heads up that you don't have to sand, but it will help the paint to stay better in the long run.

cut a template that covers just the tire. that way you don't have to tape every wheel. i cut one out since i'm repainting mine this Thursday and i think it's gonna help to reduce painting times

Looking into getting some Enkei EBX rims and painting them bronze, I'm having a friend photoshop them onto an IIP tC so I can make sure they'll look good. Would it be much easier if I paint them before I have the tires mounted on the rims, or would it not make much of a difference? I would think it would be easier because I wouldn't have to cover up the tires and avoid spraying them.

A little preview...

Since I don't want to a) start a new thread to ask this, or b) read every post on the previous 7 pages:

Can anyone report in on how durable their OWN painted rims have proven to be? Have you had any problems with easy chipping/flaking/scratching? Any need to re-paint often/at all?

Thanks for the info! This should help me decide if black wheels will be a $25 job (paint) or a $800 job (new wheels)...

andino
02-01-2008, 06:35 AM
mine have been fine for a while now. just make sure you clean the wheel really well before painting so the paint sticks. it also helps to primer first. mine have been painted for like 2 months now gold. and before that i had them for like 2 months bronze. never had any chipping problems. as far as my experience goes, as long as you do a good job the first time, you won't need to repaint them

Awesome, thanks for the input Andino! If the paint is good and doesn't chip, I'd much rather go that route than get new wheels. Plus, I like the overall design of the stock wheels, so I'd feel sort of dumb shelling out big bucks for a wheel that looks almost the same, only black. :)

Thanks, again,

heree is minee i've done it way before i read this thread but this thread is a good
write up on what you have to do....butt who ever tries to do this,...just get a good clear
coat if ur doing any other color other than black..brake dust is so bad on paint thats
not clear coated....and for the taping off the rim part...i just used index cars and it
worked perfect...didnt get any overspray on the tire at all...but the taping is good to...

i figured i wanted to be diff so i decided to go with a florecent orange...and well here ya

It looks alright from a distance but if you get to close and really really look then you can see paint quality and its not perfect. It was alright until i started messing with clear coat. It feels like a sandaper in some places. Any advice how to use clear coat or get rid of that sandpaper effect? Polish wheels really goood maybe?

I put 2 coats of primer, then 3 coats of paint, then 2 clear coats. I didn't even sand it because I didn't want to mess up tape and it already looked and felt smooth. Well I sanded 1 wheel with 1000grit after I put first cost of paint and that wheel turned out to be worst then others. I'm going to be repainting them in a few months if I still be rolling on them. I just like changes and I want to see how long that paint is going to last. Should I wetsand it with like 2000 grit sandpaper and put another clear coat on whole wheel without masking it? I'm just going to put big fan next to wheel this way all that extra paint in the air won't settle down on fresh paint/clear coat.

alucas8892 , go for it if you're not afraid to endup with completely black rims :P j/k Just make sure you got 2 days off to do that. Take your time. It takes about 1.5-2.5 hours just to tape everything around. I started at 2pm saturday and finished around 6am Sunday. Just remember electrical tape and acetone are your friends. After you put your last coat give it 10 minutes (dont let it dry too much), take mask off and start cleaning all that extra paint around edges with acetone just be careful. Good luck.

alucas8892
04-30-2008, 12:57 AM
Thanks! Are you sayin to use electrical tape to tape off the wheel?

Drey
04-30-2008, 01:11 AM
^Yes. Look at 5th pic in my post. Get roll of electrical tape and make a deep cut around it so you will have pieces 1/4 inch wide instead of 3/4. Just dont stratch it too much when you put it on or it will shrink and peel before you even finish with painting. Just use it in places where normal painting tape wont stick.

okay guys I need some help because I went ahead and tried this using duplicolor wheel coating and it didnt come out all that great. Whats strange is the 2nd one i did is perfect: smooth and glossy. But the other ones look like their covered in powder, the texture is very rough and it looks flat not glossy. Do I really need to resand and paint all over again or do you think I could wet sand the rough areas to smooth them out? I just dont know if wetsanding works with the wheel coating. Has anyone tried?

x_Batman_x

well to update i was able to save one of the wheels by showering it in clear coat :P
It could still use a redo but I will definatly do the other two botched ones first. Whats really bad about one of them is that the paint is rubbing off in some places. I just have no clue why that one did not work out at all. I will post pics later but again does anyone know if it is okay to wetsand this type of paint?

Yeah. The same thing happened to me. The sides of the spokes got really rough. Like something was on it. And when you rub it, it kinda powders off white right? I'm not sure what it was but to make sure everything went right, I resand the rim, primered and paint. Not sure if it matters or not, but when i painted the second time, i made sure the spray can was upright and painted it very quickly. Painting one rim at a time, and carrying it inside when done. Not leaving it anywhere near the next rim incase paint overspray from the second rim get on the finished rim.

what grit sandpaper did u use?
and
did u clean the rims real good after u sanded, before u painted?

x_Batman_x
05-27-2008, 06:14 PM
I did one rim at a time too, but I didn't primer.

I first sanded it wouth a rough purple color sand paper and then a finer tan colored paper. Ill look at the grits when I go home later. I dont care if the sides arent perfectly smooth but I want the top to be.

Whats annoying is that on the rim I saved with a clear coat shower, like all the top surfaces are smooth but some of the side surfaces smooth while other are rough... that sort of inconsistency drives me crazy. maybe once it cures I'll rough up all the sides so atleast its all consistent.

yellowxhoodie
05-27-2008, 06:16 PM
sounds like you need to do a better job sanding.
not bashing you, thats just what it seems like.
if some of its smooth and some of its rough, sounds to me like some uneven sanding.

x_Batman_x
05-27-2008, 07:09 PM
lol no its because I was pouring on clear in a last ditch effort to make it glossy and coverage just wasnt even enough

Maybe better sanding would have helped though. I try to get it perfect when I go to redo the really messed up one. Do I have to sand the paint all off or just rough it up?

yellowxhoodie
05-27-2008, 07:21 PM
if your doing it in the same color u should be fine with just roughing it up as long as you dont have any ridges, cuz youll be able to see them even after repainting.

if you are redoing one that you clearcoated, make sure you sand off all the clearcoat though.

yellowxhoodie
05-27-2008, 10:00 PM
i used the rattlecan wheel paint from autozone.
sounds to me like you just gotta sand a lil better so the paint sticks.
you could also try using a primer first...

x_Batman_x
05-27-2008, 10:17 PM
that's so frustrating. I literally spent more than 4 hours on each wheel to make sure the sanding was perfect and now I've gotta redo it all

I let it sit for no more than 8 hours before putting them on and driving them. I washed them the next day. And it's been over a month going through at least 6 car washes. No problem at all. Maybe a few hours of Arizona heat is like days of heat elsewhere...

yellowxhoodie
05-27-2008, 11:27 PM
yea i put mine on an hour afterwards and drove in the rain that night, even though it says not to.
not really sure what your problem is batman but i hope you figure it out and they turn out better this time!

x_Batman_x
05-28-2008, 02:03 AM
no they're still fresh, I just finished on yesterday lol, but they sat for well over 10 hours before being driven on

idk I think I'm gonna wait untill I finish up with school then resand, primer, then use exterior paint and then clear over it.

Its just so strange because I never had a problem before when painting. I wonder if its because I used a rougher grit first because I probably didnt go over every area such as the tight curves. Though i dont see why rougher texture would result in less adhesion.

Thanks for the positive feed back guys. :) Like yellowxhoodie said just masking tape and take your time. I actually masked from inside the bead of where the tire meets the wheel lip and went all the way around the tire and masked most of the inside of the wheel except for like 2" I left behind the spokes and did that black. After I did primer and 4 coats of black, I already had the tire masked off so I just needed to mask the center of the wheel to the lip leaving only the area I wanted to be red open and did 5 coats of Duplicolor engine enamel since they don't make the high performance wheel coating in red. I like the way the red has a gloss to it because of the ceramic in the engine enamel and the black is more of a flat finish since I didn't do a clear coat. It really makes the red lip pop. I took a bunch of pictures but they're still on my girlfriends phone I'll see if I can get them posted tonight. One other thing if you're going to paint the wheels black don't miss the center caps and I did the heads of the lug nuts as well because I didn't like the look of other paint jobs where they were left unpainted.

yellowxhoodie
05-29-2008, 04:46 PM
painting the lugs look better but as soon as you go to rotate your tires say goodbye to you rprecious lug paint job. lol

when i took me car in for its first free oil change, i got lucky, the salesman who sold me my car wanted to check out what i had done so we went in back, and the tech was just about to rotate my tires, he asked me if i wanted it done because hes prob chip my paint, so i said no just leave em. lol

Hey guys! My name's Chris. Saw you're guys's post and decided to go ahead and paint my wheels, brake calipers, and front grille/scion logo. I painted the 17" alloys striped powder-coat gun metal, which meshes well with the lip of polished silver/gray. The calipers are now red, and the front grille is red with a gun metal scion logo. Next I will do my fog-light covers and rear symbols. I am blacking out my back lights...smoking them, if any of you know how to do it. And getting new halo or HID lights in the next couple weeks. I also just put in my K&N Filter that day which made a great difference along with my blue interior lighting kit. Well here are all the pics in steps of the car to help all of you trying to do this as well!

Now she's taping them up with me...

...so they end up looking like this, if you are following this design!

Then spraypaint even coats about 2 to 3 times and peel tape to look like this. Our paint was DupliColor High Performance Wheel Paint - Graphite. The cap paint was black high-temp DupliColor barbeque paint.

This is my front grille after we painted it red with the DupliColor Red Caliper paint that we used on the calipers, and painted the Scion logo with the sparkely wheels paint which was a great idea.

I'm using krylon triple thick because two other people suggested it but it keeps turning white. any ideas on what to do or if i should just buy anothr kind of clear coat nd redo the clear? plz help

i use duplicolor wheel clear coat. sometimes it fogs up when drying too. if you let it fully dry and cure, the fogginess should go away. spray the clear on and let it dry overnight. if it keeps fogging, then go ahead and use a different brand.

lol x2 :P

Also I'm planning on redoing my wheels next week, but I was planning on just using regular exterior paint rather than the wheel coating in order to obtain a glossyer look. Will this be okay? or do I need to use something designed to withstand high heat?

Dre's rims on page 10 are my favorites hands down. The ones with just the spokes painted dont look good to me. If your going to mod your stockies they should look factory fresh when your done. Otherwise whats the point.

Also, has anyone considered using a small sand blaster to sand the tight curves?

i wouldnt do it.
take a lil drive, like 10-15 mins.
not all freeway, do some driving around town (stop and go)
then get out and feel your wheels.
theyre pretty hot from the heat coming off the brakes.
the wheel paint is slightly heat resistant ( idk if its as much as the engine paint) but it does resist heat more than normal paint would.
so i wouldnt risk using regular paint becuase this project is a pain in the arse.
its just really time consiming with the sanding and taping and everything. i would never want to have to do this again.

if u want a glossy look. get the gloss wheel paint, and also get the high heat clear coat. do a couple coats of clear after the wheel paint dries. Then wax your rims regularly just like u would ur car.
Thats what i did and they always looked great.
