Default Q: about injen's xB SRI CARB legality

i was on the injen website and noticed that their listing for the xB's SRI said that it was CARB legal for 2004 only . does this mean it wont be legal on my 2006? i got the pipe from my friend, an ex-xB owner ('04).

I don't believe any intake currently available is CARB legal for '06. In '06 there was an addition to a charcoal filter in the stock airbox. Removing the airbox will remove the filter, thus not making it CARB legal.

It isn't. It's just for emissions. And to the best of my knowledge, CARB cert is only required for Cali. Maybe New York too. So yea, unfortunately, it looks like you should keep your stock parts available for when you need emissions testing.

^^^what he said. The charcoal is for evaporative emissions. Won't affect how the car runs or emissions while it's running. It'd be a visual inspection fail if anything.

Oh, yeah, the charcoal was new for 2006. That's not to say the intakes went through the process and are CARB exempt for other years though.

Not always here. There was a poster that worked at a dealer in my state saying his garage was having a problem with someone who'd installed an intake. He wouldn't say specifically what the problem was... It sounded like a cheapo eBay intake with the little filter instead of the hose from the valve cover to the intake. Which also wouldn't show a problem for the emissions test, but did fail a visual inspection.

Guess I'll find out if it's a problem when my emissions inspection is done. Got almost 1.5 years before I have to worry about it!

You can, it will be illegal. I have an intake on my 06 xB. But I don't live in Cali.

One of my local importparts stores stated that Injen is CARB Exempt in CA. Is that right?

Not for 2006...

Edit: let me clarify. Basically, there are intakes that are CARB exempt for prior model years. An intake that was CARB exempt depends upon the application of said intake. For instance, if you buy the Injen short ram and install it on an '04 or '05, it's fine, that particular intake meets CARB requirements for that particular model year. The addition of the charcoal filter in 2006 means that the emissions has changed and CARB exemption no longer applies. So, as of right now, I'm not aware of any intakes that are CARB legal, or exempt.

I found this...

http://www.racepages.com/parts/cold_.../scion/xb.html

This lists 2006 for Injen. Is that right?

^^Yes, you can buy the Injen for the 2006 models because the engines are physically the same. So it will fit, but it's not CARB approved. According to Injen's site, their intakes are only CARB approved for 2004 models. I'm sure that they have submitted their application for CARB exemption, but it's hard to say if it will fly. California has the strictest emissions regulations in the country.

Alright, I see... So what happens if you FAIL a Carb test?

Theres no way an xB can get intake and pass CARB test? That sucks... T_T

Well, if you keep your stock airbox... I think you can see where I'm going with this...

Are emissions tests scheduled? If they tell you when you need to come in for testing, throw the stock box back in, pass the test and put the pipe back in. It's a pain, but imagine how good your're going to get at installing intakes!
