Typically, the rule of thumb, when a car is "redesigned", it loses its value significantly; just ask Hyundai.
The Scion xD has a new name, so technically the xA was never redesigned, however; the the xB was just redesigned, possibly putting to shame the high prices on resale. Some think their xB1 will maintain its value, but I think only after a few thousand dollar drop once the new xB2 is out.

since the xa and xb were the first 2 styles to hit the scion brand... i wouldn't get rid of either. i'm keepin my xa for the long haul.

with the new xB coming out with a 50% hp increase, paddle shifters, standard HID - no doubt the 1st gen xB will fall in value. I anticipate being able to pick up a nice used xB for roughly $10k in the next few months.

the xD didn't really change much from the xA so I doubt the same impact will be seen on the xA cars.

No it won't, there will always be a strong following of folks that will only want the Classic B and will pay more for it. It may actually go up in value for the next few months. I'd buy a second one to hang on to and not put miles on ;-)

I think there will always be that person who wants the 1st gen box and will pay for it when they become harder to come by.

Yeah... I wouldnt mind getting a hold of an xB1 for around 7000. Thats my guess for where the price will sit after the xB2 is out

I think the xB1 will quickly become a cult classic car. Although I like the xB2, it won't come close to being as iconic a car. I wouldnt count on xB1 values dropping to much.

IMO; as one who IS trading in his 1st gen for the xB2, intially no, the price wont drop. Considering that Scion only plans on releasing a few of these to the US in late March early April. Mid summer when they go full tilt and you can get one as easily as the 1st gen last summer, then yeah the re-sale value will drop on the 1st gen.

Generally there are those who buy a used car cause they cant swing a new car payment. That coupled with the fact that plenty of them were made and will be readily availible there wont be a shortage of 1st gen xBs for quite some time. I would go as far as to say that in 2 or 3 years you can pick up an original for 7K or less.

Im planning on getting anywhere from 10K - 11K for my trade, and that is about average here for a used xB in good condition. Now, depending on how much more they want for the new xB2 ... will decide how much more money i put in and how much i save for mods. =)

With the 2.4 .. the 6 air bags .. and the HIDs i find it hard to believe that they are still only going to be tacking on $1,500 onto the base price of the 1st gen. The factory add-ons are going to be hella expensive to make up for it.

Exactly. It's like the slinky, sometimes you just have no place else to go, and the original was the best. However, in the automotive arena, you can't just make the same car over and over again for 20 years. Dodge tried that, and well before the new Ram hit the showrooms in the early 90's, Dodge held a whopping 1.3% market share in the full size truck segment. And they didn't have Titans and Tundras back then.

Dont forget that with every passing day your car gets older. The only way that the xB1 would be a cult classic is if it follows the path of the VW bus. Yeah, there cool, but outdated.

I would say that 10k is a very optimistic viewpoint. Sure it's an RS1 and all that, but most dealerships don't touch a bluebook value or any of that. You're better off looking at a Galves book for an accurate trade-in. If I were you, I'd try and sell it. You'd get the 11k if not more.

I love these wishful thinking threads. You really want the xB to plumet in price so that you can buy one. But the very fact that you, along with many others want to buy one, will not let the price drop. Truth is the oldest xB's out there are only maybe 3.5-4 years old. You are not going to be seeing a GOOD one for 7k for a loooong time

i think 7k is too aggressive.

picking one up for 10k would be relatively easy. in fact, i already see some hitting 11 and they're somewhat modded. i'm not too worried or in a rush - i can wait it out. :)

Local Toy dealership had a used box with 5000 miles on it with three options (can't remember what they were, I think cruise, a subwoofer and floor mats) for 14,500. It was an '05 model year, price was in the end of 06. They are holding their value just fine in San Francisco (everything's expensive here, mind you).

if you were talking from a purely technoligcal standpoint, no, the xb's would never hold their value. compare the value of the xb and xa to its toyota echo cousin. there really isn't any cutting edge groundbreaking engineering in any scion, but because of their unique designs, iconic stature, and cult following, they will hold value but probably only for private sellers. in a few years, trading them into a dealer will probably be disapointing.

so in otherwords, be grateful that you have scion xa/xb's instead of toyota echos. while they are both equally mechanically obselete, the scions have the cool, youthful, cult following that will help it retain its value while toyota echos will be doomed to be an uncool, ugly econo-beaters with virtually no resale value.
