I realize this probably does absolutely nothing for performance. But i was getting the itch to do something.. anything AHHHH.. see its driving me crazy that i don't have any mods yet :D But i took off the resonator and plugged it up with a 1.5" cap i got at home depot. Sorry for the bad quality, i took the pic with my phone. I'm gonna go back and see if i can find a black one instead of yellow.

Well resonators make the intake quieter, i took the top charcoal filter out of the airbox at the same time so yes it louder, and has a throaty sound to it now, but i did them both at the same time, and i'm sure removing the filter is the reason it got louder. But like i said i'm sure it didn't do anything, i just felt like taking it off.. hey.. less weight :D

The resonator is there for a reason (and not just for sound.) They intake tract is tuned just like the manifolds and exhaust system. Mazda MX-3s have a similar chamber and removing it does nothing positive for the car, in fact, it usually messes up the idle a little. I would leave it as-is. Return your plug and save your money.

Quieter, really? Sounds not too bad? Would that work on any car, like my xB? Do you think it would help even if I have an aftermarket exhaust? Also, could that cap, or any other for that matter melt inside the engine bay like that?
For a low-cost mod I think it looks not too shabby... :wink:

That's kinda like saying you shouldn't get an aftermarket intake. I know you'll say .. well they tune those intakes properly.. but since i started the celica.net website, i got the blitz, aem, injen, and titan intakes from those distributors for my celica.. all of them produced a rougher than stock idle. If you think about it.. if you took the resonator off, and took the actual airbox off.. and hooked up a cone filter to the end, you'd have an aftermarket style intake. But like i said .. again.. the first line of my post was.. i know this probably doesn't nothing for performance. :D

removing an intake resonator in my experience is always good. they are designed to make the exhaust quiter.

-so when it is removed- the dynamics of your intake a changed to more closely resemble a aftermarket intake (a straight pip with no extra branch offs)

if the idle is getting messed up on mx-3's i would assume that the resonator must be restrictin AIR FLOW big time, so when you take it off your A/F ratio changes to having much more air. THIS IS GOOD because now you can change your timing to add more fuel and that = more power :D

How tought was taking the charcoal filter off? AFAIK it's there only for smog/emissions reasons and looks pretty restrictive to me. Did you have to break off the clips that hold it or does it just snap out somehow?

Yeah, just break off the clips...I just used a screwdriver and poked through and pulled it out. After the main chunk is out, just use your fingers and pry the rest off that is attached to those clips.
