if i make a copy of the key at like a home depot or OSH... would it work? or would the engine not start because there is no chip in the copied key?

it won't work for the ignition... no.

just a spare key to let you inside the car.. pretty much.

 

it will open the doors, if you try to start the car, it may start but will shut off after a few seconds. if you get a new key and get it programmed you need all the sets of keys there with you. they have to program each key at the same time.
