Dont worry about it... TheQuietThings actually wasnt completely kidding...
Girls kind of are genetically predisposed to be a little bit worse at driving than most men. A guys brain is set up to be better at spatial perception... a girls brain has a larger connection between the two halves so girls tend to be better at things where you have to utilize more areas of your brain at once... but this is just a general trend for girls...
Everything depends on the person... One girl may be MUCH better at spatial perception (biologically) than another guy... or much worse than most girls... it just means that your brain is organized a little bit differently. What you lose in one area, you gain in another. You can't always have it all... :|
PS: I'm a good driver except for my right turns so I will be an occasional member to your club... I can't be paying 1/2 attention like i usually do when driving or I might hit the curb :[. I also think its the boxes fault a little bit... Its sooo hard to see the front right side street in this car when you're short :[

MAKE WIDER TURNS. and if you continue to hit the curb while turning on a red light, then just wait a few seconds for your light to turn green then you can make a comfortable turn. yes it is legal to turn on red lights but it is ILLEGAL to drive on the sidewalk. :silly:

What my dad had me do to practice getting used to the car (and to help me parallel) is find an empty parking lot and drive around on reverse. I'm not talking about going straight, but make a path around the lot islands turns and all. You'll get funny looks if there is a security guard in the building (one came out while I was driving reverse around and stared at me as if I was crazy). Then after you've gotten used to driving around backwards, use cones (or those big plastic trash cans (closer to height of other cars)) and set up a space for you to parallel into. After all that, I was pretty comfortable parallel parking (sadly, it also made me more comfortable, and better, driving reverse than forward). After getting comfortable with the trash cans or cones, try actually parallel parking between cars. Find a gap that's big between cars, so you get the hang of it again and just parallel in. Getting nervous and panicy just makes it harder, so just relax and let whatever you learned with the trash cans/cones take over and before you know it, you will have paralleled. =D Good luck and have fun driving on reverse (it's fun!).

as far as im concerned, it seems that your taking this as a joke, but it isnt, if you cant drive correctly that you really shouldnt be driving at all.
Exactly. Here, this may help your motivation some: Don't think of a car as transportation, think of it as a 3100 lb KILLING MACHINE!!!!!
Your car is potentially one of the most lethal things that will ever be in your control. It can kill, maim, and completely ruin the lives of mulitiple people in nearly an infinite number of ways. You can rob a mother of her son, deny a child the right to a parent, put people in wheel chairs for the rest of their life or a coma for 6 mos only to escape the jaws of death with a $300,000 hospital bill.
You need your eyes examined and basic training or a bus pass. Sorry, I don't buy the "I just can't do it", or any of the other excuses people use to "justify" their bad driving. If you drive bad, then sell the car or learn to drive well. There is zero room for negotiation here.
EnderSavesTheDay
02-20-2007, 01:35 AM
The lady was addressing the issue, most others turned it into a joke.
I guess I shouldn't be driving because I curbed my passenger side 3 times.
Be a good driver, not because you fear the consequences but because you value life. It should not take drastic circumstances for people to value life, but unfortunately that seems to be the case for most people out there.
"There is zero room for negotiation here" is a load of crock that's rhetoric straight from aged politics where things are "black and white." Driving has become a necessity and if you're a bad driver and realize it like Thu, then you become more cautious and take the necessary precautions to be a better driver.
Yet, to me, it seems the case is not about driving but life values, but hey values are "relative" and everyone's got their own thing.

Normally I'd agree with you that breaking things down to b&w is a bad thing, but when it comes to dangers invovled in driving (number one cause of death for folks <18) I disagree. Like learning to shoot a gun or sky dive, you learn to do it safe or not at all.
It's good that she recognizes her defiiciencies, however it does appear that she is making light of it, and that's the issue I have. It seems like she's blowing it off and saying, "well, I'm a bad driver, nothing I can do about that."
Remember when the old guy ran through the market in his car and killed 8 folks, including a few kids? Some people were saying, "well he's old..." I was thinking, "and?" Everyone on the road should be held to the same standard, irregaurdless of age/gender. You either can see the eye chart or you can't. You either learn to tell where you car is in space, or you bum rides.
Driving is not a necessaty, although many people have constructed their lives such that they have made it one. Believe it or not, there's still people >30 and 40 years old that have never driven a car and they seem to manage to live perfectly normal lives. It's a priviledge, and should be taken as seriously as cancer.
When lives are at stake, I cut no slack, sorry.

Then I'm surprised you're not out there avidly protesting the war, abortion, euthenasia, gang violence, domestic issues that lead to drug abuse and violent life styles... this list could go on... but let's not go there.
Well I agree that I take life seriously, but I do my best to live w/o regrets. If I get maimed, I get maimed, if I die, I die. If it happens to others, it is tragic and I agree we should prevent that from happening.
It's easy to say "go without driving," but then I guess "bad driving" needs to be redefined to "incapable of driving." If that were the case she should not have been given a license. 30% of the drivers on the road don't have licenses. Traffic school is extremely logical and needs to be taken seriously. Driver training needs to be taken seriously. I may curb my passenger side every now and then but that does not mean I don't pay attention to my surroundings. I'm often more aware of pedestrians, bystanders, and other cars around me than anyone else I drive with.
I agree driving is a priviledge. All life is a priviledge. Often times it's hard to realize that as social beings who are easily swayed by media, social traditions, and trends.
Anyways, there is no point in arguing. I just hope you all drive safely. I respect your point of view, but I think it too rigid, that's all.

I think most people realize the seriousness of these events.
My point, and I apoligize I haven't made it more clear, is that too many teens today are too flipant about the seriousness of driving. That's all I'm really saying, trying to get more people to take it much more seriously.
And I place that blame squarely on the shoulders of the parents who let their teens drive when they don't have a clue as to how they are driving. Personally, I'd love to see getting a license be tons more difficult. 6 months to a year of training followed up by extensive testing. And periodic checks as we age for sanity, sight, and hearing.
This is how I look at it: Every single time you get in a car, there is a statisitcal probability >0 that you will get into a wreck. It will never ever be 0. There is nothing you can do that will eliminate your chances completely of getting into a wreck. However, the things you do while driving (or don't do) will either bring you closer to 0 or further away. I'm just trying to get more people to do more things to bring that chance closer to zero. That's all.
Sorry for piling on here, not taking the act of driving serious is just a major sticking point for me. and btw, I'm 34, been driving since I was 15, and have never been in a wreck. I have avoided several, but always managed to avoid it. And I seperate the times I was lucky (there have been a few) from the times I have actively avoided the wreck because of what was doing or not doing (there have been way more than a few).
My sister on the other hand has been in 5 (all sober, she just tailgates and doesn't pay attention), and if I could revoke her license, I would.

First off, for clarification, Ive NEVER hit anyone before. And from the past fews posts i see you guys are giving me tips about taking driving lesssons and telling me to get my eyes examined. Fact is that i feel it is unnecessary since I've only gotten one ticket (28 on a 20) since i started driving and i do not race or speed while driving. Not to say that i don't need it of course. To my knowledge i presume i have decent sightings. Like i said before I am only unable to see the front of my passenger side, therefore, i curb check. If in any case bad driving means curb checking, unable to park, or any of that, then i gladly admit that I'm a bad driver. Although I dont pay much attention to my changing lanes, i do use blinkers and am aware that there are cars around me. MY definition of bad driving only consists of the minor errors people make driving daily. But i can tell you there are worse ones out there who are even worse than i am. Street racing for instance is guaranteed worse than a few curb checks. Running stop signs is another example of "bad" driving. There are so many other things to rag about and I'm assuming you guys think i am one of those drivers. Well I'm not!
I do agree however that there is always a chance of me getting into a wreck and driving school is necessary for certain people. But I'm not one of them. I opened this forum topic to get insights and opinions on how i can become better at it. I also wanted people to have a sense of humor and laugh at what they do sometimes.
This topic, as i can tell, is beginning to get serious, so I will too

This is what I'm talking about. Paying attention is a choice, not an involuntary reflex or something that just happens or doesn't happen. You choose to not pay attention. So what advice do you seek? Just pay attention.
I completely agree that the street racers are probably 1000 times more dangerous than what you do, but let's be real here. All it takes is one time. Just once, and a dozen lives can take a horrible turn for the worse.
The topic turned serious because driving is serious. You choose to drive how you drive and you choose to make the decisions you make.
First off, for clarification, Ive NEVER hit anyone before.
I'm sure you haven't, but you forgot one little word on the end of the sentence: Yet. You've been driving only a few years, and if life is good to you, you will drive another 50 plus years. Let that ring in your head for a second: 50 or more years of driving left to do. That's a whole lot of lane changes that you freely admit that you choose not to pay attention to. How long do you think your luck will run?

I'm a fair driver. I curb checked once and recently effed up the rack & pinion system. I took a turn with too much understeer and ended up halfway on the center median. Those things are everywhere in Texas, never been? then you wouldn't know. Just takes things slow. Ease into the turn and give yourself los of time.
When I started driving at 15, I drive to get better at driving. So everytime I'm behind the wheel, I am practicing to perfect my skills. You just need to get used to how your car peforms or acts in every situation. Picture your car from the outside. You'll curb check here and there if you've done it once there's a chance you'll do it again. But since I lowered my tC I'm much more cautious.
Well not during that night where I landed on the center median at 2 in the wet morning.

not seeing the grand cherokee easing up behind you on the left when you go to change lanes at 70 mph on a highway could be disasterous.

thUsLw, I hear what you're saying, I'm not assuming anything, and going by strictly what you are saying. It's good that you at least admit your faults, don't get me wrong. Sorry I was harsh, but the light tone earlier in the thread had me worried with the level of seriousness you took your responsibilities as a driver.
You ask for advice, and here it is, pay attention. Turn the cell and radio off when you get in the car (just for a little bit till you get the hang of the techniques I'll describe in a minute). Focus on what's going on. I don't know how to advise someone on how to focus on the road other than to do it.
Don't stare at the car directly in front of you, look several cars down the way. When you see the 3rd car in front of you break, chances are the car directly in front of you will be breaking soon as well.
To keep your mind from wandering, observe what's happening all around you. Check your rearview mirror at least once every 5 sec, and your other mirrors right after that. Take note as to who is around you. If something is static in your mirrors, it's moving at the same speed as you, and is not a threat.
You are looking for what others are doing, and trying to guess their intentions as to whether or not they are going to be a threat to you and your car; do they look like they're gonna cut you off, where do they seem like they want to go, that type of thing.
And please do take a deffensive driving course, you'd be surprised what you get out of it.

I'm a firm believer that smart people (level headed, common sense, went to college etc.) are better drivers then the less fortunate who are not smart. Let's say about half the people in America are not intelligent individuals, we can assume we are driving with a lot of idiots. I know I do every day. Just this week, some guy tried to merge into my lane at a friggin' stop light. I'm like 'uuummmmm, hello???' then I layed on the horn and gave him the bird.

spatial perception is an ability that comes naturally to some people, thuslw. if it doesn't come naturally to you, then it takes some extra work on your part to develop it. as already stated, practice in a parking lot with traffic cones can help immensely. the more you practice maneuvering in tight spaces, you'll notice the curb contact taper off. don't get frustrated if you slip up now and then. as an aside, please keep track of everything around you, and make sure to look in the direction you're turning before you're in the turn.

Growing up with Gran Turismo on the Ps1 definitely helped me with driving once I became a driver. For instance, knowing how far to turn the wheel so I can successfully line up my car and merge into another lane at a stop light (Not just point the front of the car at the person in front's rear bumper, causing you to take up 2 lanes). If roads were more fun to drive, driving would not be such a damned chore. In consequence, we'd all become better drivers! Horah!

Ok, for starters you need to make sure you are operating the vehicle in the way it was intended. First thing you need to check: Seating position. When in the driver's seat, you should be able to hold the wheel with your left hand, and the shifter in your right without having to lift your shoulder blades off the back of the seat. Second: Headturning. When you take a turn, try not to shift your head to the left or right, but keep it straight with the rest of your back. When you negotiate a turn, and you let your head shift, it changes your perspective on the apex of the turn, thereby causing you the driver to misjudge your steering. Third: Use both hands to guide your vehicle...one hand on the wheel does not make you any cooler, it just gives you less control over the vehicle, and makes it easier for you to get distracted. Fourth: Slow down and reduce distractions. There is no need to speed all over town, if it could cause you, or someone else, harm in the long run. Reduce cell phone use while driving, and try to wait to change cds, etc., until you are at a lot, or some other point where you can do so.
I hope this helps out, just try to take your time, and gain a natural feeling for driving your car and you will be ok.

most people are ignorant and judge you on one mistake you made in the past when on the road you can outdrive them any day. i have yet to hit another car/hit a curb/hurt my vehicle.
i wrecked doing something stupid and learned my lesson. i could outdrive about 78% of the people at my school yet everytime they get in the car with me after driving 10 minutes they say "your allot better driver than i thought."
if you rub the curb allot and ____ heres what you should do. pick a point in the middle of your hood on the car. line that up with the curb/left of the curb and you will be in the middle of the road all the time. just pick a spot on the end of your hood thats about in the middle and line it up with the curb. i herd that from someone and it helped me stay
in the middle of the road and after a while you get a natural feel for the road and dont have to.

I’m guessing that the other person didn’t know what they were doing (is it this turn? Next turn? Where am I? I’m lost!) and wasn’t driving to try to ____ you off. It’s a good start that you noticed erratic driving and thought about it. So why didn’t the thought cross your mind that this guy might try to merge back into traffic? Instead of speeding up to keep next to him, you should have slowed down and given some room just in case.
Sure you’re ____ed that he just cut you off, I would be too. So why did you think it would be a good idea to pass him, give him the finger, cut him off, slow down, and block? What he did was possibly accidental bad driving, what you did was intentional bad driving.
You’re lucky that this situation didn’t end with him running you off the road and then beating you senseless with a tire-iron. I’d guess that the majority of “road rage victims” had instigated the situation in one way or another.

A girl I know here, who drives a tC, completely destroyed a green sedan a few days ago. I can't help but label her as a bad driver, as she's quite ditzy in person, and has damaged her tC before. Despite it being a tC, I wish she'd total it and buy an Eclipse or Celica. :P She always gets away with a dent, meanwhile this green car was missing it's entire left side.

This is just a suggestion really, but I think that people who don't really "get" where there car is, like THuSLW, should consider driving smaller cars. Big cars are much more difficult to drive because it requires being aware of more things and having better depth perception.
My mom isnt the best driver at all, she had a nissan sentra, and she even scratched stuff with that car. When she upgraded to her acura tl at 1.5 times the length, I told her I was worried she'd hit more stuff. Luckily she has been extremely careful about driving the new car and always pays careful attention now (she's learnt her lesson, and admits it).
I also feel that a very low seating position can make it difficult to have a good idea of where your hood ends, or even of your vehicles turning radius, so I'd recommend adjusting your seat accordingly.
Lastly... please don't get an SUV. My past experience tells me that it is difficult to drive a vehicle such as a van or SUV/ Truck because smaller/ lower vehicles are even harder to identify in your blind spots. One time with my tC, I was trying to merge onto the interstate and had just taken the on-ramp.. I pulled up along side a Ford Exedition... it turns out he needed to get into the same lane I was in and started merging into my lane while I was still beside them... almost forcing me off the road. I can tell you that it was plainly obvious that his windows were above the roofline of my car..which means he couldnt see me when he glanced over. Thats situation wasn't my fault...it was his (or hers I don't know) because they werent aware of my cars location, because they werent actively scanning the road on either side of them.
I believe that people should only drive vehicles they are completely capable of driving... and that almost all SUVs and some vans are more difficult to drive than small and mid-size sedans. I think that stats should do more to qualify drivers, and that it would help to have multiple classes of vehicle licenses, that align with different sizes of vehicles. This way, better and more conscientious drivers would get certified on bigger vehicles, and those who don't care/ can't handle medium-large vehicles would still qualify for driving small-midsize sedans.
I also think there might be a better (although probably not as awesome of a vehicle that suits your driving habits ThuSLw. Maybe try a Mini next time. Thats a pretty small car but still fun to drive (according to others). Just my 2 cents.
1. what is that guy lauhing at? me? : /
2. I sit highest i can and very straight.
3. Cant drive with 2 hands, the right one gets tired easily and i start to swerve
4. this car is smaller than my previous...
5. i would never get an SUV, youre right its too big

This topic, as i can tell, is beginning to get serious, so I will too
i had a friend survive a dump truck that rolled over and went head on to his parents SUV after someone cut him off. it seems he didnt "notice" the dump truck.
luck or god, or whatever was on his side, and noone died/got severly hurt.
either learn patience and PAY attention to the roads, or hand over your license. how would you feel if someone cut off your mom or dad, they swerved and hit something/someone and they died or got severely hurt? now apply that to someone outside your own family.
after survivng several accident that i swear death was upon me, it's drivers such as your self i dislike and at times i wonder why women pay less than men do for insurance.

All of these driver's are dangerous:
1) Alpha dork male who get's p'od when someone goes a shade bit quicker than he, so he speeds up...then the other ADM get's p'od because this moron just went a little faster, so the other ADM goes a little faster, then.......which leads to number 2:
2) Doofus racer boy/girl who thinks it's cool to go 80 in a 30 where there are numerous side streets and businesses where type 3 drivers could pop out of nowhere at a moment's notice, and tragedy ensues.
3) Ditzy goofball who thinks their car is made of Nerf and that the world is bubble wrapped, so it doesn't matter if they bump into everything, so they don't bother to pay attention to anything outside of their car, so they don't notice the ADM's traveling 80 in their 30 zones, and then tragedy ensues.
They are all dangerous folks. All of them. Male or female, it doesn't matter. And yes, you can have female ADMs, and you can you have male ditzy goofballs (I was roommates with one in college....5 days after grandma gives him a one year old Camry, he destroys the driver's side mirror while backing out of the garage.)
BTW, if you were to do a study of every accident in the past 20 years, I'd lay dollars to dougnuts that one or more of the above types were involved in 90+% of all those accidents.
