View Full Version : high pitch whine Started (only at some speeds) (5000m ish)
TRDTerror 02-25-2007, 11:47 PM I hope that some one may have came accross this and that it is easy to fix or atleast diagnose.
The XB is new, I am the first owner, We are just over the 5000m mark around.
When the XB reaches Speeds 40-45kph (27.96mph) , 65kph (40.38mph) and 110-115kph (71.45mph) I can hear a verry distinctive high pitch whistle/whine kinda sound from the front end some where. WHen I put down the window... it doesnt sound any stronger... if anything its harder to hear. It only happens within those speed ranges. If I take the car Out of gear, and also take my food off the gas.... It still sounds the exact same... till my speed drops out of that range where it starts.
Nothing in the vehicles steering or anything seems to change or shake any more or less.
Anyone have any ideas? or has heard/came accross this before?
I just think its way to early for anything mechanical to need looking at.

rallying_the_scion 02-25-2007, 11:50 PM if you got the warranty, might as well get it looked at before things get worse if its a bad situation.

The tricky part with warranty... is although I am coverd .... I am In Canada and its a big dance that takes place for things to happen...... and I have this phobia of dealerships.... because I dont want to, nor can I really afford to pay for anything if they dont want to cover it under warranty... then im stuck with them and a bill.
The only thing that I have changed on the car is the front upper grill because some punk kids stole the front emblem and I just went about getting a replacment grill. The new Grill is a billet grill .... the only thing that has changed... I thought maby the grill was doing sumthin odd with the wind and makin some music like a whistle... but I think thats crazy talk now. So It may be sumthin like a wheel bearing perhalps... or maby a caliper issue.. Those are the only things I can think possibly.
rallying_the_scion 02-26-2007, 12:17 AM some people claim to hear noises with aftermarket grills, i have one installed, but hear nothing. Its possible your grill is doin it, specialy at certain speeds, remove it and go for a drive, see if it changes anything. My box had to go to the dealership not to far after buying it, they fixed it no questions asked and at no costs, but every dealership is differ.
TRDTerror 02-26-2007, 01:00 AM I had thought about maby takin the grill off.... see if any change.... but then I told myself that I was crazy because it sound was sooo predictable and controled... and was not any louder when I opend the window ........ I think Ill take a quick boot tonight with some cardboard taped over it or sumthin... see what changes.... if nothing... I guess Ill have to take her into Toyota this week.
Jan06xB 02-26-2007, 01:15 AM I get a tranny wine when in neutral and coasting but it goes away in gear. You don't happen to have dear whistles mounted in front ??

:nope: Give me some credit man!
rallying_the_scion 02-26-2007, 01:21 AM ......wow  :gun:
Jan06xB 02-26-2007, 01:28 AM Hey we had a guy in alaska that was hearing clicking noises in the wheel at 30mph turned out to be his hubcaps - even after changing the tires to snows. If you recorded the sound and posted it we could listen to it and maybe figure it out. Check your door and rear hatch seals and try turning up the heater fan when you hear it to see if it changes. Also put the heater on recirculate to eliminate door seal air leak noise - no air in no air out.

Jan06xB 02-26-2007, 01:34 AM Oh ok so you probably put a grill whistle on the front end. See I wasn't far off with the deer whistle. You do know what deer whistles are right?
rallying_the_scion 02-26-2007, 01:34 AM my front wheels clicked in reverse, dealership said it was brake pad shift, ehhh, i guess. My blower fan makes noise at times. some rattles in the dash. but id bet maybe that grill might be it???
TRDTerror 02-26-2007, 02:09 AM You do know what deer whistles are right?
:silly: Please note: Im from Canada... :P
TRDTerror 02-26-2007, 02:14 AM Well it looks like I should have stuck with my first instinct when I heard the noise today. (I told my wife that it sounded "Harmonic" and not mechanical, maby it was the new grill) SOOOoo..it also looks like most of your hunches where correct too
I did the 25-40-70mph test with the grill coverd in News paper... and then pulled over ripped it all off... and did the 25-40-70mph tests again and it was back like a Banchi....
So I guess thats good.... at least its the better of the two bads.... better then having to repair sumthing.
I Hope that in the summer maby when the metal expands on the car and grill that it will tighten up and shut up. In the mean time I am going to contact the company I got it from and see what they think about it.
Have a good night lads,
Thanks,
bB2NER 02-26-2007, 04:12 AM Sorry to hear it's the grill. Maybe try more of a mesh one instead of billit. Those billit ones sing like a blade of grass between your thumbs.

Yeah, it sucks... I hope some type of fix will come about... the company told me they are going to get back in touch with me about it. I am going to re install it and righten it up again see if that helps.
I really like the look of the grill.... so I hope it works out.... I am also not looking forward to shipping a 3pc billet grill from Canada back to Cali' if thats what they want me to do.
