There's a topic with the same name on the front page near the top. Give us a break.

What are you talking about throwing a CEL?????? A cel has to do with the o2 sensors - one on the header, and the other on the downpipe. Of course the catalytic converters can throw it as well, but that is exhaust business. We are talking about intakes here......

Listen, the deal with the ebay intakes are simple and straight forward. There is not much of a difference between a $250 injen pipe and a no-name pipe. The fact is, a pipe is a pipe. One end goes to the engine, the other end to the filter. Now yes, the filter is garbage, so get your own high quality filter, but other than that, a pipe is a pipe and its ridiculous to spend hundreds of dollars for a 'name brand'. In reality, no intake is going to give noticable horsepower - they are for looks and sound. I personally can't justify spending all of that money for one. The ebay intake on the otherhand coupled with an aem dryflow or a k&n is well under $100 and performs just the same. I say go for it, just buy from someone who has a good feedback rating b/c you don't wanna get screwed.

Are you serious?!!
02 sensors are not the only things that throw CEL's. I really hope you are joking because that might be the dumbest thing i've ever heard.

Most of the Ebay intake's piping diameter is larger than the oem intake tube. Causing far more air to pass by the MAF causing a lean condition.

I'm speaking from my own experience with my Ebay intake and i've been a technician for years. Research the topic. If the pipe is larger than oem and it doesn't neck down at the MAF you will get a lean condition causing a CEL.

material and design are also very important factors!

injen's intake is designed and proven make hp....
the material used is not the same the pipe from your ebay intake will heat up the air because its made from such low quality material, thus resulting in a loss of hp
you cant justify paying 250 for a pipe?...i cant justify paying 100 for a pipe that doesnt even work...

dude...that is why you disconnect the negative on the battery during the install. It resets the ecu so that the maf can recalibrate to the amount of air that is coming in so that it doesn't run rich or lean. I've never heard of anybody throwing a CEL from an intake install b/c i've never heard of anyone dumb enough not to reset the ecu to adjust the to new airflow....one of the first things that you read when you open any beginner car book is that the engine runs on air/fuel mixture.....i'm sure you see where i'm going with this.....lol

ebay intake costs $35. If you believe that ANY intake is going to give you noticable horsepower, you're only kidding yourself. 3-4 hp is not noticable. Yes, ingen gives more hp than most (its a 3inch pipe), most intakes are less than 3-4, maybe 1-2.

Dyno it.

Far more calibration/ tuning is necessary than just disconnecting the battery if the engine is getting too much air. And you disconnect the battery for safety reasons, resetting the pcm is just part of the process.

Extra calibration isn't necessary unless you plan on tuning the car...thats talking quite a bit of money for a piggyback, etc. Notice how injen, aem, trd, etc all make intakes and the install is the same. Disconnect the ecu during install and thats it. I run an ebay intake and I have no cel. So much for your "guaranteed cel" theory.

Try again. At PEAK hp, the injen (which supplies the most hp in comparison to any of the others) adds 7-8. Like I said 3-4 for the injen during normal driving, less for the rest - 1-2 or so. Nothing noticable....(sounds good and looks good however)

My ebay pipe is 2.75" but i'm running a short ram. The injen is 3" and thats a full cai. To compare apples to apples, we must look at sri vs sri (as the ebay is a sri). In a sri, the MOST effective intake (being the injen) added 3 hp....enough said.

lol, dont give bad info. He may not know you're that you're kidding about the turbonator. lol

Again, my sri from ebay has been on for a while with no CEL. I've never heard of anyone buying an ebay intake or any other intake and throwing a CEL when installed properly. Sure, if its not installed right, thats another story - all bets are off. But no matter what ya do bigmick, get a quality filter...i'm sure we can ALL agree on that!

Install has nothing to do with it... even if you reset the computer with disconnecting the battery IT IS still possible to get a CEL if the MAF reads something out of a particular range... and this is after a toyota tech installing a TRD intake following the instructions to the letter(im not a tech, but one of my customers is a toyota dealer and i have asked alot of questions about my car.).
You are correct in saying that any quality pipe with a good filter is fine... but you cant expect every ebay knock off to use a good pipe... and if they sell you one with the MAF mount that doesnt seal properly you most definitely can throw a CEL...

You're right about that. If the MAF mount isn't cut properly, it sure could cause some problems. I personally would check that when I got it, and if it is a problem, i'd just return it. I never thought of that as its a sign of cheaply made equipment. Mine fits nice and snug without any issues there, but I don't know if all of them are made as well. Thats why I would check feedback and only buy from someone with very good feedback. If it doesn't fit the MAF properly, its definitely possible to throw a cel, but I would never let it get to that. I test fitted everything when I got it and would've returned it if it didn't fit. Maybe I got lucky, who knows, but its still a heck of a lot nicer than spending 250-300 dollars.
