hey, im 18 and looking to buy my first car, of course the scion xB. I got the money to pay for the car all by myself, and i went to look up insurance on Progressive and they quoted me for $7,050.00 for 6 months... yeah... right. I proceded to call Geico, and they quoted me for around 8k a year, not too bad but still out of my price range. So my moms car had recently died and i figured i may as well split the cost of the car with her and she could use it, and that would make insurance cheaper.... haha, was i wrong. the sales rep had given me the price of $1,450 for 6 months.. at this point i crapped my pants because i could finally afford the xB!!! then he threw in the catch. (that son of a _____!!) that $1,450 was only for the period when i had my learners permit, once i took my road test and passed my insurance would be 8k a year.

so, now to my question:

how much do you pay for insurance on your xB in new york?? 8k a year, or 14k seems a little... high, but i dont know as this is my first car so im looking to compare what people pay.

anyway, at this point it looks like i wont be getting my Scion unless i move since i have heard insurance in NY/NJ is the highest in the country.

Are you serious 8K a year for insurance?! Even when I first got my license and bought a brand new car my insurance was still only 2,400 a year. Now that I am a little older my insurance is 800 per year for full coverage on my xb and corolla.

If you pay $8000 a year for insurance, I'll drive out there and slap tha taste out yo mouth!!! They gonna use vasoline or just pork you dry? For real though, call State Farm. I've been using them for 13 years and I pay $52 a month full coverage.

How old are you?! Thats a good quote! I'm 16 & pay 200/month or 2400/yr and I have McNair & Assoc.

I would just check with another agency, like some one said, if you pat that much I will drive up there and kick ya where the sun dont shine :D

Something no one has asked, how clean is your parents driving record? If it is crap thats why they are going to charge you so much. I think it has to do with that saying "like father like son", or "The apple does not fall from the tree". So if your parents record is bad they assume you will be a bad driver also. If this is not the case then look at it this way, why the hell would you pay 8k a year on a car that is 16k?

I would shop around. Progressive and Geico quoted me 2 and 3 times the rate that I ended up finding and paying for. And I'm 23 with a clean record.

If I were you I would buy a used car(paid in full) and get assigned risk. After three years with no accidents or tickets your insurance will go down. Just be glad you don't live in NYC it would of been even higher. 8K a year is ridiculous. No way I would throw away money like that. Sux.

Is this on your own or under your parents insurance? If that is on your own, I need to give them a call. I'm going to call around anyhow towards the end of the year when my insuance expires.

I pay about $1000.00 every six months for comprehensive on 3 cars and liablity on an old truck. I know people that have racked up so many tickets that they lost their license, then got arrested for driving w/out a license spent time in jail for not paying their tickets had to have a SR22 insurance filing and still paid less than a third of what Geico told you.
And they keep sending me crap saying how they can save me 15% or more (or less).

I pay $2000 a year. I have a speeding ticket and a insurance claim agaist me.
After May of 2005 I should be a few hundred cheaper.
Dude, try not to get any tickets at all. It just puts you in a high risk rate.
This is a chicago figure by the way.

Progressive & Geico have the worst rates in the industry. If you have a relative that served in the military, you should check out USAA for their auto insurance. $8K to $14K per year is insane. Sounds like you found an agent that thinks you're stupid and he's going to pocket a huge bonus. Or, he wants you to go away. Also check with 21st Century and Mercury insurance. I've heard that AAA is good too, but a bit pricey, though I've never heard of $8k per year. When I was 18 my insurance (under my parent's policy) was $3K per year total, for my mom, dad and Sis (I think) and that included one accident (plead no contest) when I was 16, and in Southern California. Best wishes in finding a decent insurance provider.

I am 19 Bought my scion brand new with my own loan and my own insurance policy with EVERYTHING covered and the lowest deductable possible and it costs me $2,200 a year. I have a perfect driving record no accidents, no tickets, etc., etc. :D $8K is a rip off I would never pay that...that is like paying for another car. Granted mine may be cheaper because I am PA and not NY.

geico is a rip! they give tha cops free radar guns,go figure. i have 2 friends who had geico 1 had a ticket for 15mph over and they dropped him,the other had two fender benders in ayear, not his fault they dropped him too. reason was he was a high risk.they were not out any money in either of his accidents, both he was rearended by fools on cell phones. both in their 30s.
