WHY? what would be the purpose of folding side view mirrors? When I lived in Japan, many roads were as wide as most alleyways over here, it made sense..but WHY would you want or NEED it?

It would be nice to have in the case where someone/something brushed the side. Instead of breaking off, the mirror would just fold inward (of course, this is if the brush came from the front to back)...

The only reason most cars have this feature is for garage parking. The tC is too narrow to really REQUIRE side folding mirrors. Would have been a neat option though. ;-)

Actually, the Celica had "break away" mirrors and I was glad it did. On more than a couple occasions I had situations where someone or something inadvertantly ran into them with enough force to move them out of harms way instead of taking the brunt of it. Not life altering, but a nice little option in my opinion.

The majority of cars built in japan have folding side mirrors for parking and just getting into tight places. I was actually surprised the the tC didn't have folding mirrors. Guess it is only marketed to the US...

I wish the tC did, because with my integra I used to fold them up at school so people who walk in between cars wouldnt bump into my mirrors. i've seen that ____ happen so many times, it's sickening.

As far as I know, all newer Toyotas have either break away side mirrors or fold away(and Lexus has automatic fold-away when you turn off the ignition). Also, someone said that the brush up would have to come from front to rear... actually, mirrors that DO fold, can fold forward AND backwards... try it next time youre at a dealer.

I know my xA's mirrors fold in and out, and so do the xB's. Why the hell the tC wouldnt be able to do that :?:

answer:
The majority of cars built in japan have folding side mirrors for parking and just getting into tight places.

The xA & xB were orginal designed for the Japanese market, hence the folding mirrors, The tCwas orginally designed for the US market. And as all Japanese know all americans are huge and thus everything in America (Roads, Garages, Happy Meals) are extra huge. ie...

it would have been nice, then the guy who hit the right mirror wouldnt have broken it off.

The thing is alot of people *COUGH WOMEN* lol jk, dont know how to drive. Some of the roads here in the states are kind of small and when u have cars parked on both sides of the road and 2 cars have to pass at the same time they come in very close to all the cars. So many people fold the mirrors to give it that extra 5 inches of space (which is a good amount) to give more clearance.

back in baltimore, my street was narrow... very narrow, you couldnt own an H2 on my block (as my neighbor foud out). folding in my mirrors gave me a little more protection against the garbage truck taking it off, because it was a tight squeeze

figured id look at this thread since the tc and xa share mirrors
on a side note, my owners manual says they can fold! it also says that i have heated mirrors so take that with a grain of salt, lol
