well after what happen at the car show i came up with a few ideas and starting thinking about what i need to do to the scion just for me to compete with everyone and after the awards where given out i came to the idea i need to stop putting stuff into the scion and buy a car and make it a drift car/ race, so ive been looking for some cars and getting some ideas to what i need to do. oh maybe i should say why i am thinking this. At the show i notice all the cars that won were what cars that had mods done to them to street race and drift and so forth, car shows in seattle seem to be based on that and not big body kits and all out modded with interior stuff, just plain jane stuff like roll cage and gauges and seats and alot of stuff to the motor and suspension. So i think i am going to buy a car that i can compete with them and still keep the scion as a drive around car and maybe certain shows that dont look at race mods and look for the body kits and stuff like that. i have a few ideas on the car and there is a place i am going to check out down here where i live that has what i need, this weekend so sorry if this makes no since to other but i am not one that can write good stories lol or what ever you call it. thanks and check you later

so...your going to keep your scion as a daily driver and get a project car? does that sum up what you took waaaaaaaaay too long to say?

either way it is going to be a money pit whether it is your tc, or some project car.

if you like old cars... i know a guy up here selling a 70somthing datsun 510 2/door.. its a project car... and letting it go for 1800 or 2000 for the upgraded block... plus has LSD for it and tons of other parts....
body is in good condition too

Why can't you do these things to your car? Cage=$600, gauges=$200 aprox., suspension= $1400 apox., etc. These are things that are not going to change no matter what car you buy! I would save the ime and money and mod what you have, you already have a good thing going!

i want a drift car a RWD i also want a car that i dont have to worry about warrities. I am looking at maybe getting or try to get a 240sx, 180sx, Ae86(86 carolla) or something else. You gots to relize that when you go to a car show in seattle that is what those judges are looking for when judging come on think about it who won the most trophies hondas and nissans that had what done to them, race mods not bling bling fancy fancy lights or body kits well the drift cars did but they were made to race and drift and plus you cant drift in a tc ( sorry erik getty you are the only one that i know who can well downhill drift) but still i just want a project car or a car that has little stuff done to it that i can finish with my own touches and test my hand at something else. i love my tc and will not ever get rid of it but i just think i would love to do mods on work on the cars that got me started in the import scene.

Well it's not really that the judges prefer performance over visual. If you didn't notice, this year, the whole scene is moving more towards the "Clean" look. No more r34 skyline kits on the 88 accord anymore. More along the lines of a subtle, sleeper-ish, luxurious look. Something that's modified, but modified the less blinged out way, and in my opinion more stylized. But honestly, it sounds as though you want a true sports car. One of the things I've always wanted to do was grab a mid-90's 240 hatch and swap in favor of an sr20 redtop; rework the supsension and turn up the boost! I've heard that there is a following of drifters in seattle that meet in office building parking lots late at night (with stories A LOT like something out of Tokyo Drift). That sounds like a lot fun!

well that is cool, but yeah i would love to own a drift car and do what like i said got me into the import scene, with a true import. there is a 180sx sitting at my aprartment and it has been there for almost over a year, it has advan rims, a silvia grill and what i can see a inner cooler which means that it might or has an turbo on it, but that thing is no one drives it and i have not seen the owner working on it or the owner at all, i would love to buy it from him and finish what he started, oh yeah it has a millitary sticker on the front window so i am thinking he is gone over seas or something, but other then that i want to go old school import and build a drift car simple as that and show it.

Brad, just make sure you have a bottomless pocket book 'cause building a drift/race car is going to be expensive. If building it doesn't break the bank, it's the maintaining it and the tires for all the drift sessions. I would love to help ya out when ever I can if you need it on your new project.

I too would love to build a drift car, but my pockets aren't that deep & I'm already having a hard time trying to make the Xb pimp looking or keeping it nice. I can't have another hobby car!!

i don't think a ae86 would be right for you. while initial d would have you believe that the 86 is the perfect car, it is only really capable in the hands of a good driver. because of its modest engine output, you have to go all out on every drift. i'd get a 180 to 240 sx because of their more powerful engines making them more forgiving to handle and recover with.

I applaud your efforts but in my opinion you are looking into a market that will be an expensive start-up. The problem is that everyone who wants a drift car want's a 240 or a 180, some even want an 86 ( check my profile I've been down this road ). What you need to do if this is what you really want is look for a car that people dont really want ie. 240 coupe not hatch and the same for the 180 or even the 86. this will not only help with weight ( the hatch glass weigh's a ton) but with price of the initial vehicle. It will be like finding a needle in a haystack but if you want it bad enough you will look.

mattross does have a good point there. Everyone wants the cars that the pro's started off the sport it.. there are going to be other good drift cars that aren't as popular I am sure

well for now 240 and 180 sx is what i like, i am not just buying this car to just drift i just want a project car that i can mess around with and is RWD and when i look at those two types of cars i just love how they look all done up and stuff like that. i have to wait till i get a garage before i start working on it but if i can get one to just dink around with and do little stuff then that is cool.

honestly... if you really want a RWD that is about the get way cheaper and easier to mod that you can pick up dirt cheap and will run forever? look at the 1st and 2nd gen MR2's... TRD is rereleasing the "toysport" parts (toysport was pre TRD and i know they have already done the springs for the MR2 and the sway bars for the AE86) for these and the ae86s in the next few years because of the growing popularity... if you get one now before everyone buys them up you will get it for a steal and if you get board with it you can just wait a few years and flip it for like 3X your initial investment.... or you can bang your head against the wall trying to find a 240sx that is clean, never been wrecked, low mileage, and is under 3K... good luck.

VIP ????? sorry i am clue less but i guess once you tell me what it means i will probly be like duh lol

Defined according to NCCA Competition Regulations

"What is VIP? European, Japanese or American automobiles which are recognized as luxury vehicles.

VIP- The ultimate VIP vehicle can be defined by the perfect synthesis of form and function. Established and respected European/Japanese tuning firms provide the components that ultimately help to create a VIP style vehicle. Often these parts are rather difficult and expensive to obtain. The latest in technology and materials are used to ensure the vehicle is on the leading edge of tuning. Cost is often a secondary concern to quality. There are no short cuts taken on a VIP vehicle. From the exterior to the interior, modifications are completed that extend beyond the simple bolt-ons. Attention to detail is paramount among those serious about VIP tuning. Flawless workmanship and custom styling cues are the rule, not the exception. Whether a VIP vehicle is parked on the streets of LA, Miami or NYC, there is no mistaking the sleek, upscale style. VIP tuning is universally recognized by a high-end look and feel.

Japanese VIP Tuning

If you don't know what Japanese VIP tuning is, it's pretty simple. In Japan, there is a long list of big luxury cars available to the market. From the Nissan Cima to the Toyota Aristo, these cars are upgraded by way of fancy body kits, huge expensive rims, air suspension, insane sound systems, etc.

Some of the cars that are popular with VIP tuning in Japan are the Crowns, Aristos, Majestas, Celsiors, and Cimas. There is a long list of models with each having a healthy following. Body kits are a major part of the tuning process. Normally VIP saloons are outfitted with wide body kits and huge sidesteps that makes the car look like it's an inch off the ground. It may sound surprising but huge double decked, GTR, and supra wings are not the norm when it comes to Japanese VIP tuning. What is popular though is the whale tail. Small lip spoilers that have been molded to the trunk are also very popular but the whale tails definitely attracts the most attention. Wild offset deep dish rims are also a distinct characteristic that separates VIP machines from other styling cues.

One of the craziest aspects of the tuning done is to the muffler. Wild mufflers are definitely a big part of the VIP style. You'll see single mufflers that are pretty average and singles that seem to stick out 2 feet from the car and curve upwards.

The interior of the car is also highly modified. Full leather interiors, wood and carbon fiber dash kits, electronic suspension controlling systems, expensive floor mats, navigation systems, insane sound systems, and expensive steering wheels are just some of the modifications made. VIP’s will also have lots of neon and black lighting on the inside.

The stereo system is also a major factor when it comes to VIP tuning. VIP’s have extravagant sound systems. Expensive CD / navigation head units and the biggest subs that can fit in the car, along with everything else necessary to having an awesome system, are installed. Generally all of the cars will also have TV screens.

The most popular platforms for Japanese VIP tuning include Lexus and Infinity.

European VIP Tuning

European VIP tuning emphasizes modification of the vehicle in an upscale fashion. The mixture of performance and aesthetic customization of the vehicle does not compromise its overall luxury.

Exterior modification is usually a combination of adding aerodynamic components from respected European tuners, along with some creative custom individualization. Molding of bodywork is popular among this crowd to create a seamless, integrated look. The wheels on these European VIP automobiles are usually multi-piece and no smaller than 19 inches. Often, these wheels are built with custom offsets to achieve a dramatic wheel lip, while allowing for upgraded brake caliper clearance.

The interior of a European VIP vehicle is adorned with the latest in technology and materials. Carbon fiber, alcantara and leather combine to create a driver/passenger environment that is luxurious yet sporty. Complete in-car entertainment systems are carefully integrated and installed with attention to quality over quantity.

Performance modifications from exhaust and intake to forced induction of normally aspirated engines are common. The key is installation that appears originally equipped from the factory. Upgraded suspension and brake systems are installed to complete the overall performance package.

The most popular platforms for European VIP tuning include Audi, BMW and Mercedes Benz automobiles. Competition is intense among this elite segment. The cars that consistently win have a cohesive overall theme that is evident in each judging criteria. The careful attention to detail distinguishes the winners in European VIP tuning.

Cars eligible for this classification may include the following brands and respective models:
Audi – A6 A8 all S series
BMW – 5, 6, 7 series all M series
Mercedes Benz – CLK E, S Class and all AMG models
Lexus – LS /GS 400 and up
Infinity – I, M, Q series
Volkswagen Phaeton
All Ferrari, Lamborghini and Porsche models
Cadillac – STS, DTS XLR, CTS-V and Deville
Chrysler 300M, 300C
Lincoln - LS

What signifies VIP versus Regular classification?
A competition vehicle that is styled to either Japanese or European VIP specifications as stated in the above description, classifies a vehicle. If your vehicle is not VIP styled you will be placed in the regular section of the show for competition."
